From the Editor
8 September 2013 – less than three weeks to go. And I’m not talking about the election, it’s the 2013 Scandinavian Festival. Celebrating the clear blue September skies and our Nordic heritage.
I think everyone on the planning committee is just a little apprehensive: last year was a great success and we want it to be even better this time, so please come
along and spend the day or just a couple of hours.
The raffle prize list is growing steadily and we want you to win: buy raffle tickets at the August café or directly from the club or at the festival. Although all work involved with the festival is on a volunteer basis, the infrastructure costs including marquees, stage, toilet block, street closure and council permits run into the thousands before we even get started.
På gensyn!

What’s on at the Danish Club? Café Danmark 23 August 2013 from 6 pm It’s time to ‘hygge’ and spend some time with new and old friends. The ‘smørrebrød’ menu varies from time to time, but you’ll usually find ‘rullepølse’ (spicy rolled pork), smoked salmon, roast beef, ‘leverpostej’, roast pork and ‘Esrom’ cheese on the menu. And hot dogs. The bar offers Tuborg and Carlsberg beer varieties imported from Denmark just for us as well as several Australian brews. If you like a glass of wine with your food, we have a good variety of whites, reds and sparkling on offer. And check out our tempting chocolates, licorice and other sweets fresh in from Denmark! It’s also an opportunity to buy delicious Danish pastries, rye bread and other specialty breads and organic biscuits direct from Britt’s Danish Delights. Tea offers smallgoods
and quality meats from Heinz Meats, the Danish butcher at Woolloongabba, as well as her own goodies including remoulade. Order in advance and pick up at the café.

We need many volunteers to help out at the Scandinavian Festival 2013 on 8 September 2013. If you can spare a couple of hours to help in the kitchen or the stalls or set up in the morning or clean up in the afternoon, let Lone or Soren know on 0431 881 513.
Whether it’s the body corporate in your
unit block, the local soccer club or your camellia growers’ society, they all have a
committee and they all need members to help run the unit block/club, oversee expenses and income and map out the future – the Danish club is no different. We want more committee members! The committee meets once a month and participates in the club’s monthly events. It’s interesting, challenging at times and
you can take on as much work as you can manage. Nominate now! Complete the nomination form in the newsletter and hand it to a committee member at the August Café Danmark.
Our membership sneaked past the 200 member mark at the end of June last year and hit 230 this year. Now we need everyone to renew. Don’t forget to pay your membership fees.
Raffle tickets for the big festival raffle with prizes in excess of $9,000 are on sale now – we need your generous support again. Pick up a book at the next Café.
Congratulations and thanks to Renee Martensen who won the $100 for Rogue Bar + Bistro in our prize draw for members who had paid their membership fees by 23 July 2013. Velbekomme!
The 2013 AGM is scheduled for Saturday 14 September 2013 – see more in the following pages.

The next service at the Danish Church at Mount Gravatt is on Sunday 22 September 2013 – check out the church calendar later in the newsletter.
A sad farewell to Stella Garvey who was buried on 15 August 2013 from the Danish Church at Mount Gravatt. Stella came to Brisbane more than 50 years ago to visit her two brothers, met her husband and stayed here. Stella was a member of the Danish club for many years. She was 94.

Study & Stay in Australia? Your door to the best in Australian Education & Training….
IAE Study In Australia is owned and operated by a Dane – Riborg Andersen – a former teacher and senior government employee, with a strong background in both Danish and Australian education and training. We are a professional International Education Agent, with over 18 years’ experience. Did you know that when Denmark decided that it wanted every senior secondary student to have an international experience, the Danish Undervisningsministeriet invited Riborg, as the only Australia representative, to run workshops for Danish secondary schools seeking to establish relationships with international counterparts, to encourage their students to have an international study experience? Using our knowledge and expertise, we help Danish (and many other international students) to come and study in Australia. Do you have family or friends in Denmark wanting to come and study in Australia? We are here to help.
· For individual students, we can help you to find a suitable school, college or university taking into account a student’s academic background, family/friendship ties in Australia, their strengths and interests, budget and aims. We place students into primary and secondary schools, TAFEs and universities all over Australia.
· For Danish schools, colleges and universities, we can help you to identify suitable partner institutions in Australia, and develop successful Study Abroad programs. Over the years, we have established such programs between Australian institutions and schools/colleges in Aalborg, Aarhus, Skanderborg, Silkeborg, Køge and Roskilde among other places.
Tell us what your aims are, and we can find the best way forward. Did you know Australia now offers a 485 Graduate Visa for students graduating from any 2-year Australian Bachelor or Master’s degree, and wanting to stay in Australia for another 2 years to work and/or play? Want to know more? Ask us. And the best news …We do not charge any service fee, as we are paid by the Australian schools, colleges and universities. We look forward to hearing from you.

As I mentioned before, our membership list is far from complete with many birthdays missing. Even worse, children born after the initial membership form was completed, aren’t
on the list. So I’ll need your help with corrections and additions over the coming months and don’t be surprised if I ask the question. If you absolutely hate the idea of having your birthday advertised, let me know as well. Email [email protected] with any updates you may have. Apologies if your name is not on the list – there’s always next year.

Events The July café was also busier than expected, but we were better prepared and had enough hot dogs and food to keep up. It’s hard work for our busy volunteers
in the kitchen and we couldn’t do it without them.
New equipment and maintenance Alan got a quote for the stainless steel bench top on the sink side and the committee decided to go ahead now. We’ll also replace
the oven/cooker and expect to complete both for a total of approx. $8,000. Have applied for various grants for a kitchen update, but with no luck.
Money The annual audit has been completed by Wilson Ross who indicated that the cost of the new roof and solar power be taken up on the balance sheet. 2012/13 is a surplus of $34,800. The new club year got off to a great start with three good events, with July showing a good result from bar and kitchen sales and membership fees.
Newsletter Several new advertisers have come on board in recent months, which is promising.
Membership We continue to get quite a few new members joining up and the committee thanked Peter for his idea with online membership form and payment via PayPal, it makes the process very easy and accessible. Of course now the challenge is to get all memberships renewed (at 5 August 105 of 230 had renewed).
Scandinavian Festival 8 September 2013 The work behind the scenes is progressing well. Many new raffle prizes and new stallholders, which is encouraging. Now we just have to sell the raffle tickets. The festival budget is in deficit, but the planning committee is cautiously optimistic! The Danish club will have the same food and stalls as last year with æbleskiver, hot dogs and flæskestegssandwich.
We’ll need help from as many volunteers as possible throughout the day and before the event with help distributing flyers, posters and letters to nearby residents. Peter will set up a volunteer sign-up area on website.
Grants Brisbane City Council could not grant funding for the book on the club’s
history. We’ll continue to apply, it’s an important project that the committee would like to see come to fruition.
AGM The AGM will be held on 14 September 2013. No new nominations for committee members have yet been received.
Library Gudrun Tvede and Pat Christensen have spent long and dusty hours cleaning, sorting and re-shelving the books in the library. Thanks!
Brisbane City Council conducted food safety audit at the club 2 August. We retained our 3 star rating.
