December 2016

Janie Tripp & Michelle Ogle — Belted Galloway Junior Association The Belted Galloway Junior Association celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the organization with a big splash during the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. New friendships were made from coast-to-coast and North to South. BJGA members were busy during the three-day event with the usual prepping of their cattle for the open and junior shows plus the usual stall detail. Hard work and attention to detail did not go unnoticed as Claire Posey (MS) and Parker Korterba (TX) were awarded the Herdsman Awards. It was very obvious that members of the BGJA are talented photographers! Over thirty entries were entered in three categories that were split into two groups. First placings in the junior categories: Ashton Caron (ME) — black/white; Audrey Romani (ME) — color; Ashton Caron (ME) — all others. Firsts in the senior categories: Julia Weaber (KY) — black/white; Sophia Romani (ME) — color; Claire Posey (MS) — all others. Wednesday’s activities also included a scavenger hunt with members learning the grounds of the North American by retrieving items at various locations. What an impressive line-up of BGJA members and cattle at Kathi Jurkowski National Junior Show! Congratulations to Lillian Ford (IN) who received the $1000 Jackpot for her Grand Champion Steer. The $500 Jackpot went to Cody Mays (OK) with her prospect steer. We are excited that the Grand Champion Buckle program and the Jackpot program will continue in 2017. It is our desire to build incentives to promote and show Belted Galloway cattle. A live auction of three items was also held before the Premium Sale to additionally fund cash prizes and buckles at the 2017 event. A Belted Galloway hide donated by Ray Family Farms (NC) was purchased by

Sherwood Acres LLC (KY) for $950 to benefit the 2017 junior show. A stuffed Belted Galloway donated by Magnolia Trace Farms was purchased by HC Sims Farm and commanded $1000. A framed print titled Yew Tree Belted Galloway went for $800 to Ray Family Farms (NC). Our 2016 Jackpot Steer Sponsors included Blisful Acres (OK), Diamond H Ranch (TX), Cross Creek Farm (NC), Hawks Belted Galloways (OK), KGM Farm (IN), Magnolia Trace Farm (MS), Pine View Farm (ME), Piney Hill Farm (MS), Southwest Belted Galloway Association. The BGJA Silent Auction was held during the Annual Meeting and Banquet. The proceeds raised ensure there is adequate funding for the next year’s Kathi Jurkowski National Junior Show. A total of $1,350 was raised to during the silent auction. The following generously contributed: Donors: Chris & Scot Adams (ME), Randy Hall family (ME), Greg & Pat Hipple (IA), Lisa Lovett (IL), Joanna Posey (MS), Loraine Prock (ME), Ellen Sims (KY), Marty & Janie Tripp (MS), Morgan & Kim Turner (ME), Julia & Anna Weaber (KY), Mike & Kathy Wagner (IA). Annual Meeting Belted Galloway Society, Inc.

Synopsis The Annual General Meeting was held on Wednesday, No-vember 16 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Louisville, Kentucky. Ninety individuals were present for dinner, the meeting and the Belted Galloway Premium Sale. Committee reports were available to all present. Andre LeMaistre of Freeport, Maine was presented the Harry T. Burn Award. Elections were held. Returning to Council to serve a two-year term are Mike Crittenden (UT), Jon Bednarski (KY), and Dawson Masters (TX). Newly elected to serve a two-year term was Bob Bickford (ME). Council approved the following officers in 2017: President: Greg Hipple (IA), Vice President: Lisa Lovett (IL), Secretary: Jane Hemmer (GA), Treasurer: Jon Bednarski (KY), and Ex-ecutive Director: Vic Eggleston (WI).

President Greg Hipple pre-sented Andre LeMaistre of

Freeport, Maine with the Harry T. Burns Award for his outstanding support and

promotion to the Belted Gal-loway breed.

From the President President Greg Hipple

I can hardly believe another year has passed.

Congratulations to the membership of the

Belted Galloway Society on a very success-

ful year. Memberships have increased, trans-

actions are up, and several important issues

are nearing completion.

The 2016 Annual Meeting and Banquet have just finished. The

annual gathering to conduct the business of the Society was

very well received. Executive Director Vic Eggleston and the

Annual Meeting Committee once again out did themselves. A

personal highlight for me was being asked to present P. Andre

Lemaistre (ME) with the prestigious Harry T. Burns Award in

honor of his dedication and contributions to the Belted Gallo-

way breed. Also, I presented Leanne Fogle (IL) with a com-

memorative service plaque as she is completing her second

round of serving two terms as a member of Council. The Belt-

ed Galloway Society is better because of members such as

these two distinguished individuals.

2016 also had its lows. We lost some very close friends and

family this year. We watched the cattle market drop to nearly

half of what it was less than two years ago. Commodity prices

are also struggling. It would be easy to become downtrodden.

A member shared during the Annual Meeting that we can and

should make a difference. Many put forth immeasurable effort

towards our chosen breed of cattle. The people that are read-

ing this are the ones that can and will keep us on the right

track.

During this holiday season, please take the time to enjoy the

company of your family and friends. We may not always real-

ize it, but we truly are blessed.

Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!

It was truly spectacular to see the Belted Galloway breed make their debut in Freedom Hall at the 2016 National Belted Galloway Show in Louisville, Kentucky. The breed has enjoyed a history of 20-plus years showing in Broadbent Arena at the North American International Live-stock Exposition. As one spectator summed up the move to the green shavings of Freedom Hall, “It’s about time!” The quality of the 87 animals shown was absolutely stellar and we must give all the glory to our many breeders and exhibitors. Special thanks to Michelle Ogle (NJ), Vic Eggleston (WI), and Jon Bednarski (KY) for their planning of each stage of the Triple Event. We also must thank the trailer load of volunteers who helped with every aspect of the event. Promotion of the Belted Galloway breed was at its finest.
