For this project we were to select a single room

within the monastery of our choice and redesign

it. De la Tourette was the biggest challenge given

it long and narrow design. I started off by dividing

the room long ways in a processional manner that

suited the monks’ life style. The communal area

(hallway), then the space of study which creates a

transitional space between the common area and

private area. I chose the Dominican order, which is

famed for its intellectual traditions, and with this

choice I used the books as both a connection and

visual divider. The monks then passed through the

cleansing before they would reside within their

space of pray and relaxation. Beyond the area

of rest they would reconnect to nature within an

area of solitary. The interior walls are turned at an

angle to create a visual separation of communal to

solitary.
