Journey Sunday
June 3, 2018
Davidson College Presbyterian Church is an Earth Care and Stephen Ministry congregation on the corner of campus and community. This congregation celebrates partnerships in Christ with the Sigona Presbyterian
Church in Kikuyu, Kenya, and the Kilambe communities in Jinotega, Nicaragua and Blythe Elementary School in Huntersville, NC. Together we seek to grow in witnessing to Christ in a complex world and to learn more
about how to respond as disciples to the great needs of the world.

*Call to Worship (From Psalm 139)
O Lord, you have searched me and known me.
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
You discern my thoughts from far away.
You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.
There is no place that I can go where you are not. Wherever I am on my journey, you are there.
I praise you, O God, for I am created in love and I belong to you!
Let us worship God!
*Hymn 35 Praise Ye the Lord LOBE DEN HERREN
*Prayer of Confession
God of grace, the road of life is filled with celebration and challenge. We know that your way
calls us to walk this journey in faith, trusting that you are with us and that your ways of love and
peace are the stuff of real life. Forgive us for ways we have strayed from your path. Forgive us
for the times we have turned from you and neighbor. We pray with the Psalmist, “Search me, O
God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any hurtful way
in me and lead me in the way of life.” Through Christ our Lord.
Silent Prayers of Confession
*Assurance of Pardon
*Response 582 Glory to God, Whose Goodness Shines on Me GLORY TO GOD
Glory to God, whose goodness shines on me, and to the Son, whose grace has pardoned me, and to
the Spirit, whose love has set me free. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen.
World without end, without end. Amen. World without end, without end. Amen World without
end, without end. Amen. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen.

One: The call of Christ is to willing, dedicated discipleship. Our discipleship is a manifestation of the new
life we enter through baptism. “As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with
Christ.”
All: “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male or
female; for all are one in Christ Jesus.”
One: We are called by God to be the church of Jesus Christ, a sign in the world today of what God intends
for all humankind.
Those being commissioned: The Great Ends of the Church are the proclamation of the gospel for the
salvation of humankind; the shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God; the
maintenance of divine worship; the preservation of the truth; the promotion of social righteousness;
and the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world.
One: Do you welcome the responsibility of this service because you are determined to follow the Lord
Jesus, to love neighbor, and to work for the reconciliation of the world?
Those being commissioned: We do.

with firmer hands Thy grace; and all my weariness upon Thee lean. Here would I feed upon the Bread of God;
here drink with Thee the royal wine of heaven; here would I lay aside each earthly load, and taste afresh the
calm of sin forgiven.

Blessing of High School Graduates
One: Before you were even formed, God knew you. While in your mother's womb, God named you.
At your birth, God's breath filled you with life. Today we celebrate what you have become
at this moment in time.
Parents will place their hands upon the graduates’ shoulders as the congregation prays:
All: God of our beginnings, we thank you for these graduates and for their journeys. We
thank you for their excitement, their wonder and curiosity, their open speech and encouraging
words. With gratitude we acknowledge the presence and guidance of the community of faith in
their lives. As they step forward into the world that awaits, comfort their fears with the full
knowledge of your divine presence. Strengthen their resolve to walk in the footsteps of Jesus as
modern-day disciples in a world that needs their spirit.
Parents pray for their children:
Parents: Guide their feet as they move through life, protecting them from the pitfalls of darkness
while they help to lead future generations into the warmth and promise of your light. We ask this
blessing upon each of them, In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!
