“Next Generation” Cataloging and Metadata Creation Pilot“Next Generation” Cataloging and Metadata Creation Pilot
• Automated capture, crosswalk and enhancement of publisher ONIX metadata
• Output in MARC and ONIX to benefit both library and publishing communities
• OCLC pilot program with publishers, vendors and libraries January-June 2008
• Press release and additional information here: http://www.oclc.org/productworks/nextgencataloging.htm
• http://www.oclc.org/news/releases/200688.htm
“Next Generation” Cataloging and Metadata Creation Pilot“Next Generation” Cataloging and Metadata Creation Pilot
• How the pilot works
• Publisher and vendor pilot partners provide title data in ONIX (ONline Information EXchange)
• XML standard used by the publishing industry to share metadata among players (e.g. publisher Amazon or Barnes & Noble)
• OCLC converts the data to MARC
• The metadata is enriched through data mining of WorldCat and data mapping from existing data elements
• The resulting MARC record is added to WorldCat
• Library pilot partners give feedback on the records added to WorldCat
• The enhanced data is converted back to ONIX and returned to publisher/vendor pilot partners for review and feedback
“Next Generation” Cataloging and Metadata Creation Pilot“Next Generation” Cataloging and Metadata Creation Pilot
• Methodology
• The OCLC crosswalk from ONIX to MARC has been enhanced to capture as many data elements as possible
• Once the ONIX data is in MARC format, we mine WorldCat to retrieve the FRBR work-set
“Next Generation” Cataloging and Metadata Creation Pilot“Next Generation” Cataloging and Metadata Creation Pilot
• Methodology
• Using hierarchies and filters to determine the best records in the cluster for various data elements, we add or replace data in the new record
• Contributor names
• Dewey and LC class numbers
• LCSH
• Notes
• Etc
“Next Generation” Cataloging and Metadata Creation Pilot“Next Generation” Cataloging and Metadata Creation Pilot
• Methodology
• As possible, we map between classification and terminologies to add additional subject metadata
• The resulting MARC record is available in WorldCat for library use
• A robust crosswalk from MARC to ONIX is in development
• The enhanced MARC record will be crosswalked to ONIX and returned to the publisher or vendor in ONIX

WorldCat SelectionWorldCat SelectionWorldCat SelectionWorldCat Selection
OCLC and materials vendors partnering to help streamline selection and ordering process
Allows selectors to view records from multiple vendors in one system and acquisitions staff to output WorldCat MARC records to load into the ILS to complete the ordering process
WorldCat Selection… It’s So Cool!WorldCat Selection… It’s So Cool!
Administrators:
• Profile with material vendors to determine the notification items you want to receive
• Setup WorldCat Selection to distribute records to selectors
Material vendors:
• Provide bibliographic records to load into WorldCat
• Notify OCLC of notification items for individual libraries, along with additional vendor data
How it worksHow it works
Selectors:
• Access WorldCat Selection to view notification records from multiple vendors specific to the collection area
• Take actions such as select, reject, forward to another selector, defer
• Review/assign fund codes, location codes, price, etc. for selected items
How it works, continuedHow it works, continued
Acquisitions staff members:
• Export all selected records from all selectors and all vendors
• Load the selected records into the ILS
• Complete the order electronically from the ILS
Maintain WorldCat holdings during cataloging process using Connexion, WorldCat Cataloging Partners (PromptCat), OCLC YBP Cataloging Plus, Batch Processing (batchloading), etc.
