LOVIN’
1 Tell us about yourself, where you’re from and what you do? I’m Kitty Gallannaugh, an English girl with an Irish name from
London. I photograph. I wouldn’t call it my living, it makes it sound like a chore, it’s my passion and I do live from it. I work in the fashion field, I kind of just fell into it after following a teenage dream which is what started this little fire in my belly.
2 What drives your creativity on a daily basis? I think a lot of it has to do with being the biggest obsessive-
perfectionist you will ever meet.
Sometimes I don’t sleep because I’m drafting up ideas and sentences in my head to take a bigger step forward. I’m constantly dreaming and reaching, it just never stops. It’s down to emotions, words from books, colours, strangers in the street; basically seeing life as one huge adventure.
3 Are you university trained or self taught? I’m self taught. I did a year’s course at university but they
expected us to already know the fundamental basics and just bring our styles to the table. I truly believe that photography can’t be taught, you

are your best teacher and learn what works best for you. Sure, you can sit in a classroom and learn what button does what and research what ISO means, but at the end of the day it’s all about your own practise.
4 Who would be your ‘dream’ person to photograph? This model called Rosie Tupper. I first saw her in 2009 and thought
she was the most beautiful girl on the planet. She has such an organic beauty with gorgeous eyes and hair. I would love to photograph her, she looks absolutely incredible.
5 Canon or Nikon? I have only ever used Canon, so I will have to say Canon as I don’t have any experience with Nikons.
6 Film or Digital? They’re both wonderful for their differences, I am torn to choose. I work mainly in digital but do
shoot film all the time on the sidelines, I have a huge box of photographs under the bed! To me, digital means work and film means personal life.
26 dashing : may/june issue
7 What’s your favourite lens? I have loved every single lens I have ever used, they have been loyal companions to me. If I had to
pick one off the top of my head, it would be my 70-300 mm. It travelled Australia with me, got lost with me in Thailand and recovered from a nasty fall and long time at the Canon repair shop in 2010. It has been there since the start of my career and is more like a friend than a piece of “gear.”
8 What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? “You can only do your best.” Those words were said to me
last year and they have stuck out in my mind, etched into my skull. My best may not be the best of someone else, but at least I can feel happy knowing I achieved my hardest possible. And I think a lot of artists forget that sometimes.
9 What’s the one thing you can’t live with out? Love. It’s the thing that keeps me warm and gives me smiles every
day. Everything is more possible and bearable when you can feel the nest around you, helping you. It supports, it encourages, pushes and is there when you fall. It is unconditional.

MUSINGS
1 Tell us a little about yourself and what you do? I’m an Illustrator and I suppose, a cartoonist and craftsperson. I make
narrative-based illustrations, working for various clients around the world, participate in exhibitions and create my own range of products (such as printed tote bags) as well as collaborating with companies all over the world to make products ranging from T-Shirts to umbrellas to badges.
2 What inspires your creative process? It’s really just everyday life. I process the world around me through drawing. I draw the things I see/hear/smell (etc)
in my sketchbooks- that’s where my work develops and my ideas grow. My sketchbook is just filled with concepts and doodles, many of which never see the light of day.
3 What’s the most rewarding project you’ve worked on so far and why? Commissioned projects which stem from personal work are very rewarding.
It’s nice to see something that I’ve worked on for fun, in my own time, become something ‘real’ that is enjoyed (hopefully!) by a new audience. For example, my series of cat conversation drawings became a monthly cartoon series for Emirates Airlines In-Flight magazine “Open Skies”.

4 Are you self taught or college trained? I studied Illustration and Graphic Design at

5Cats or dogs? Pugs
6 Conform to the norm or dare to be different? It’s always nicer to be a bit different. I guess the most
important thing is to be *yourself*
7 If you look out your window right now, what do you see? A lady playing “Scarborough
Fair” on the tin whistle, repeatedly (and very badly)
8 What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Count to 30 during a aeroplane take-off. If
something is going to go wrong, statistically, it’s most likely to happen during the first 30 seconds... (I don’t like flying)
9 What’s next for Gemma Correll?I’m in the early stages of working on two new books.
The first is about cats, the second is about pugs! They should be released in a few months.

cute but it’s fun to do to! This style is best suited for straight/slightly wavy hair, and works best on one-length hair, as short layers will poke out.

STEPONE
2 Divide this into three sections, and start with a regular ‘inside’ plait (where
you bring the outer section to the middle, alternating between left and right) and keep it loose.
DDFRESDFFGGHHJJUUYYTTRREEWWCCqweeeeeeeeee1 Take a small section of hair, direct it in the way you want the plait to go, we started at the front side.
STEPTHREE 4Now you have
just two sections. Hold on to the
section that used to be in the middle (which is now in your right hand) and then with your left hand, pinch the middle of the plait with your thumb and index finger, holding the rest of the hair in your left palm gently.
STEPFOUR
STEPFIVE
STEPSIX
DDFRESDFFGGHHJJUUYYTTRREEWWCCqweeeeeeeeee
5 Use your thumb and forefinger to push the section up, and it should easily start ‘snaking’, and turn into an s-shape!
STEPTWO
3Once you’ve reached about 3/4 of the
length of the section, and you’re about to take the right piece over to the middle, instead just take that section across to the left adding it to the existing left piece.
STEPSEVEN
6 How tight/loose depends on how you like it, we pinned behind the head, loosening it up once secured.
7 Repeat the same steps on the other side to create a cute half up do
securing with pins.

NOT
Fed up of getting bills and junk mail in the post? Then you should turn your attention to this enterprising little venture - NOTANOTHERBILL. This morning we got a parking ticket and a gas bill in the post which isn’t so fun. However subscribing to NOTANOTHERBILL is fun as you basically receive presents instead!
interview josie hendrick

WOODEN NECKLACESfrom Studio Fludd (Italy)
COPPER TASSEL BRACELETSfrom LenneBelle (Netherlands)
35may/june issue : dashing 51
Q NOTANOTHERBILL IS A GREAT IDEA, AND YOU’RE
RIGHT - MOST OF WHAT WE RECEIVE IN THE POST ISN’T FUN. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE CONCEPT?The idea sort of stemmed from the fact that I am a compulsive shopaholic and teamed with being an art director at M&C Saatchi I had cool things arriving in the post most days.
My copywriter (at the time) and good friend Martin always complained he never got
anything, and I think that’s where it all started. So I went about just building a basic site and from there blogs and people started talking. I built and designed the site myself in early 2011 and it just started to grow.
Q HOW DO YOU FIND AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, CHOOSE
WHAT THE PRESENTS WILL BE?Choosing the presents is my favourite aspect, I am a shopaholic with magpie tendencies, I spend a lot of time in shops, markets, fairs, and trade shows, but beyond that I seem to have collected a huge black book of brands that I love from around the world.
With regards to what the presents will be there are a few criteria I like to stick to, I have to love it, and it either has to be well made/designed/interesting/unique/beautiful, oh and the most important one – it has to fit through a letterbox! My favourite is working with brands who make an exclusive for NOTANOTHERBILL and in that respect it means I give my subscribers something extra special they can’t buy anywhere else.
business
GRAPHIC ITEMS from Present & Correct (UK)
Q WHAT’S ONE OF THE BEST PRESENTS YOU RECKON
YOU’VE GIVEN OUT? I’ve got to say I am proud of all my presents as this business is totally about my curation, however there are some like the silk Juliana Cassandro scarfs and the Iris Hantverk table dustpan and brush that really make me extra proud. Probably because they both have great stories and they are worth so much more than the subscription cost, but there are some really great things in the pipe line coming.
Q HOW LONG HAS NOTANOTHERBILL BEEN
RUNNING AND IS SENDING OUT PRESENTS TO THE BIG WIDE WORLD YOUR FULL TIME JOB? I came up with the idea in early 2011 and went about building and designing a rough site, but I was running it on the side of my full time job as an art director at M&C Saatchi ad agency, I have only just left there three weeks ago to now do this full time. Feedback has also been great, it’s such a good feeling when you work so hard and put so much into it to get a positive reaction.
Q DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR OTHERS WANTING TO FLEX
THEIR CREATIVE MUSCLES AND TRY AND BE SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS?As I mentioned earlier I ran this on the side until I was ready to take it on full time, but my best advice would be that you’ll always regret what you don’t do! Buy a web domain name and go for it. And get a good accountant!
Q AND FINALLY, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE
FUTURE? WHAT’S THE NEXT STEP FOR NOTANOTHERBILL? Well I aim to basically provide really great presents and work with brands I love, but also to have different price tiers and then also be able to break it down into different categories - art or fashion/jewellery/lifestyle products etc... And I would also love to do a childrens one.
Beyond that open “NOTANOTHER... Shop” and then be able to take “NOTANOTHER...” as a brand and be able to put anything on the end of it from clothes, ad agencies, festivals and so on. www.notanotherbill.com

Q TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHAT
YOU DO.I’m a freelance digital/web designer. I work from home and for a variety of clients, including leading the design of new homeware flash sales site LLUSTRE.com. I spend my spare time blogging, drawing, cooking and scampering around London.
Q DO YOU RENT OR OWN?I bought my 3-bed garden flat in
November 2010 with my boyfriend Josh. We live there with our two cats.
Q WHAT’S YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD LIKE
AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE IT?I’ve lived in roughly the same patch of North London since moving to the capital 6 years ago, and Stoke Newington is my favourite spot. It’s full of wonderful little shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants and it’s got a lovely park - it feels more like a village than part of London and it’s affordable because it doesn’t have a tube station.
Q HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR
HOME STYLE?I have to compromise a bit with home decor choices because my boyfriend is a designer too so we both have quite strong opinions on how our home should look. I definitely like patterns and colour

and given my way everything would be brightly painted and wallpapered, but he likes a cleaner industrial look. Luckily we both like the mid-century modern style, so that’s the general theme throughout the flat. We have a room each to use as a study/den so we can exercise our individual tastes more in those - mine has bird wallpaper and Orla Kiely bedding and his is grey with metal shelving and old wooden storage crates.
Q WHERE DO YOU MAKE MOST OF YOUR HOME
PURCHASES FROM?I buy as much second hand or vintage as possible and those make up the bulk of my favourite items in the flat. There’s a bit of Habitat too, like the sofa, and of course a good dose of Ikea for basics like shelving and storage. For soft furnishings and accessories I go to Etsy and SCP or make my own.
Q WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PIECES IN YOUR HOME?
I love our sofa, the Habitat Ella, because it’s a
lovely curvy shape, very comfy and sets the grey-and-yellow colour scheme for the rest of the room. I also love the vintage chairs in the living room, which I totally renovated from the sorry state they were in when I bought them.
Q HOW DID YOU TACKLE THE DECORATING AND STYLING
AS A PROJECT?I’d been keeping inspiration and mood boards on Tumblr for the months prior to buying, which gave me a pretty good idea in my head of what I wanted. We did the kitchen/living room and the bathroom immediately after buying because we didn’t want to live with them in the state that they were in which forced some pretty fast decision-making! There are always compromises between my ideal look and constraints of budget and resaleability of the flat when we come to sell. I also change my mind quite a lot, and most rooms have undergone reshuffling of furniture or accessories - everything is always a work in progress.

Q WHAT SORT OF ATMOSPHERE DID YOU WANT TO CREATE
AND WAS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU REALLY WANTED TO INCORPORATE?Most of all I wanted somewhere that suits us and is comfortable - I work from home half the time so it’s really nice to have a home that is enjoyable to be in.
Q WHAT INFLUENCES YOU?I read a lot of blogs - far too many - so I’m
constantly inspired by things I see on those. I’m also influenced by my work as a designer which is why we have lots of graphical art prints on the walls. I also love to craft so anything handmade is inspiring to me.
Q WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT DECORATING
AND STYLING YOUR HOME?I like the final product - I don’t really enjoy the process of getting there! But I do like the satisfaction of knowing that our decisions and hard work went into making our home how we like it. I also like when people come round and say nice things about it!
Q DO YOU ENJOY CRAFT AND GETTING CREATIVE?
I love to craft, though I never seem to find the time any more. We bought a lot of run-down vintage furniture which I renovated and I’ve made curtains, cushions, lightshades - it means you can get exactly what you want and have something that no one else has.
Q WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR TO-DO LIST?
We’re just about to get the garden ready for summer - we did a skill swap with a garden designer to get professional help on a budget and I’m really excited to have it done.
Q DO YOU HAVE ANY INTERIOR STYLING TIPS?
Stick to a theme, however loose, and edit ruthlessly - I think that’s the difference between a harmonising room and clutter. Mood boards and collecting inspirational photos are a great way to learn your own taste and refer back to when you’re picking new items. And I’ve learned that it’s usually better to pay an expert for tricky jobs rather than try yourself.

PRETTY PAPER
STATIONERY
withstringwe chat to cousins and business partners juliette and sarah who run boutique card
and bespoke stationery company brown paper...
interview charley beard photography david cleveland
Q WE KNOW YOU WORK AS A PARTNERSHIP, SO HOW DID
BROWN PAPER COME ABOUT?We are actually cousins, and we grew up living down the road from each other in creative homes. We both studied graphic design and then went on to live together which is when Brown Paper began - it all started in our kitchen when we decided to work on a first range of cards and approached local shops. We were met with a

interview
really positive response and so it all grew from there slowly over a couple of years from being a side project to taking the jump to doing what we love full time. The name Brown Paper came from our mutual love of the old fashioned material that we always used for wrapping presents.
Q WHEN YOU ARE GETTING CREATIVE, WHERE DO YOU
GO TO GET INSPIRED?We have tried to create a studio space that inspires us on a daily basis surrounded by images and visual things that we like. Living and working in London, we are also extremely lucky to be surrounded by such a wealth of visual inspiration, whether it’s the amazing shop windows in town like Harvey Nichols who are renowned for their amazing displays, or the great selection of galleries that we try and visit on a regular basis. Cake and confectionery shops such as Laduree or Fortnum and Mason are also amazing as everything is so beautifully presented. Magazines and blogs are also a great source of inspiration as there is so much to see.
Q WOULD YOU SAY YOU BOTH HAVE A SIMILAR
PERSONAL STYLE?We are definitely on the same wavelength in terms of style. It’s almost scary at times that we seem to be drawn to very similar
things and have often turned up at work in almost identical outfits! For both of us, Brown Paper has given us the opportunity to express ourselves in terms of colour and texture as we are much brighter in our work, loving corals, mustard, nude and gold glitter is a definite favourite.
Q WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM DESIGN BRIEF?
A dream design brief would be to be called in to do a limited edition notebook range for Smythson as it’s such a timeless store and an established English brand that we aspire to be like.
Q WE ARE SELF CONFESSED STATIONERY ADDICTS,
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS SO SATISFYING ABOUT STATIONERY?We are complete stationery addicts, whether it’s a beautiful notebook that you can never bring yourself to write in or a lovely lined envelope that you keep on your pin-board, it’s that feeling of opening something for the first time and being surprised by what’s inside. Stationery has also been a creative process for us, choosing what colour pen will look nice on what paper or what colour ribbon will dress up a gift. We love nothing more than customising the packaging of
GRAPHIC GREETINGS

a present as there are so many elements with which you can make your mark. It’s a feeling that we try to give people when they receive their first Brown Paper package from us – it should be a really fun and exciting experience. An invitation sets the tone for your special event so the colour of the twine and the texture of the seal on the envelope all play their part.
Q WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING IN THE STATIONERY
MARKET AT THE MOMENT AND WHAT DO YOU THINK IS AROUND THE CORNER?There has definitely been a return to the more traditional way of communicating and a demand for a more personal touch. In terms of trends, there is a really lovely mixture of things we are seeing and so a place for different styles. Whether it’s foil-blocking, typographic or illustrative. London seems to be a very strong theme at the moment in the lead up to the Jubilee and Olympics, from soldiers to spaniels and we have seen a significant increase in sales of our gold foiled spaniel since the arrival of Kate and Williams dog, Lupo! We are actually in the process of adding to our dog range with a dachshund, a boxer and a maltese on their way!
Q WHAT’S BEEN THE HARDEST PART OF STARTING UP
YOUR BUSINESS?No-one can prepare you for starting your own business as there are so many challenges you face along the way, all of which make it an interesting experience. Coming from creative backgrounds has meant we have had to learn lots in terms of the business side. Having both worked in offices with a large team of people to it being just the two of us, decision making becomes a hard process as the sole responsibility lies with us. At the beginning this can be daunting as you want to know you are doing the right thing but you have to make mistakes along the way which is the best way to improve. Deciding on our first greetings card collection was really difficult as you are presenting yourselves and your brand to the public and so we just wanted to make sure it was right!
Q BEING SELF EMPLOYED ISN’T EASY, WHAT’S BEEN
YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT?I think we can both say that starting Brown Paper is one of the most exciting things we’ve ever done. Scary and exciting at the same time, there is nothing like the feeling of seeing your work/products for the first time in a new shop. From the beginning we drew up a list of all the lovely stores we would like to be stocked in and slowly but surely they are being ticked off so we are very proud of that! Having our own business is really a dream come true and sharing it with each other is what makes it so special. There is a constant feeling of excitement in our studio, from when we get lovely feedback from happy brides to when new cards or invitations arrive at the door.
I think we can both say that starting Brown Paper is the most exciting thing we’ve ever done.

I’m a size 12 and I often find it hard to find vintage dresses but last time I went to Frock n Roll I bought 8 dresses!

1 You will need several sheets of A4 white copie or scrap paper (5 sheets per book). Fold the 1st sheet in half and place back on the rest. Using a scalpel and ruler, cut along
this line. Do the same for the cover using coloured A4 card.

3If you’re lucky enough to own an industrial stapler with a long neck then this step will be a breeze. Unfortunately most household staplers fall short. So you’ll have to open it
up and just make an indent to where you’d like the staples to be.

5You can now trim off the uneven page edges that are created by folding the notebook in half. Trim all 3 sides if necessary. 6And Voila! You can now label your notebooks using any kind of
labeling machine or sticker. You could make a set of 3, wrap them up with some baker’s twine and gift them to your friends.
