Day 1

C – E – R – A – E

April 25, 2011 (Monday)

Context In the absence of clearly defined goals, we are forced to concentrate on

activity and lti!ately beco!e enslaved by it ("hc# "onradt)$ %lanning is

deciding in advance what to do& who is to do it& and how, when, and where

it is to be done$ All planning involves choice' a necessity to choose fro!

a!ong alternatives$ his i!plies that planning is a proactive and deliberate

process$ (Maris and *ston, 200+)$ %art of the planning process is

orientation$ rientation is defined as fa!iliari-ation with and adaptation to

an environ!ent$

Experience   he first day of or practic! beca!e a very !eaningfl experience for

each of s$ his day we were able to have a one.on.one rondtable

discssion with Mrs$ Ma$ "hona /$ %alo!ares, the ean of iceo de

"agayan niversity, "ollege of 3rsing$ 4e received a war! welco!e

fro! the faclty present that ti!e$ ince Mrs$ %alo!ares arrived at arond

6'00 a!, we started at arond 6'70 a!$ As part of the activity dring this 1 st

day of practic!, she oriented s with the history, /ision, Mission, 8oals,

and b9ectives of the niversity, !ore specifically of the "ollege of

3rsing$ In addition to these, she was able to discss with s the core

vales of ", which are :xcellence, Integrity, oyalty, iscipline, and

"o!!nity evelop!ent, and how these vales are being integrated in the

;3 "rricl!$ According to her, what !ade " <"ollege of

3rsing nie fro! any other school are the following' the "ollege of

3rsing has its own =esearch "oordinator, "o!!nity ervice

"oordinator, and 8ided =eview "oordinator, to na!e a few$

R eflection ;eing an al!ns of iceo de "agayan < "ollege of 3rsing, I was able to

witness so!e of the challenges faced by Mrs$ %alo!ares$ As a ean of the

college, she is entitled with the responsibility to !aintain the eilibri!

between the faclty and the stdents$ As she was able to share with s

so!e of her experiences, I ad!ired her !ore$ rly, with great power

co!es great responsibility$ >o what yo want to do,? she said$ ;ecase of

doing this, yo will scceed$ he shared to s how i!portant friendship and

lin#aging is$ According to her, we shold vale the people we !eet and

lend or hands to those in need becase we will never #now that one day,

that person will be the one who wold help s arrive at or destination$ he

added that, if we will experience a door closed, we !st never be

depressed, bt rather, we !st stand p and face the challenge becase, in

every closing door, another one opens$ pportnity #noc#s only once, we

!st grab it$ @or s to be effective and efficient, we !st do things right

and do the right things$

Action   Ass!ing the role of the ean poses a great challenge for !e$ As a ean,

yo are expected to adhere to the /ision, Mission, 8oals, and b9ectives of

the instittion$ :ven if it is hard to balance everything, still a ean is

expected to find ways to strategi-e on how to address proble!s of her

faclty and stdents$ If proble!s occr, we always need to loo# bac# to the

/8M of the instittion and address the root.case of the proble!$

Evalation   At the end of hors practic!, I was able to have a deeper nderstanding

abot how planning process is carried ot by the ean of the "ollege of

 3rsing$

Context

Most people who rise to the top of their chosen careers share a co!!on

characteristic' they are decisive$ hey !a#e decisions and are not afraid to

ta#e ris#s$ 4hen it is ti!e to do so!ething, they do it, while others

 procrastinate and wait for so!eone else to !a#e the decision$ (/en-on B

athority that involves setting p the organi-ational strctre throgh

identification of gropings, roles and relationships, deter!ining the staff

nderstanding with regards to the second phase of the 3rsing

Manage!ent %rocesses, which is, organi-ing$ Moreover, I was able to

observe the "hief 3rse as she perfor!s her roles and fnctions, and relate

these with the organi-ing process$

Context

ecision !a#ing is the process of selecting one corse of action fro!

a!ong alternatives$ It is a contining responsibility of nrse !anagers$ In

all settings sch as in an acade!ic co!!nity, decision !a#ing process

provides a gideline for dealing with rotine sitations$ ecision !a#ing

relies on the scientific proble!.solving process' identifying the proble!,

analy-ing the sitation, exploring alternatives and considering their

conseences, choosing the !ost desirable alternative, i!ple!enting the

decision and evalating the reslts$ (o!ey, 2007)

Experience

ring the third day of or exposre in the " < "ollege of 3rsing,

we were able to go on with or tor of the "ollege$ 4e were able to visitthe 3rsing Arts aboratory, the 8eneral 4ard, Isolation roo! inclding

the special areas sch as the :!ergency =oo!, elivery =oo!, perating

=oo!, Intensive "are nit and 3rsery$ 4e were also able to ta#e a pee#

at the "entral pply =oo! where !aterials for the stdentDs retrn

de!onstration are reested$ Indeed, with the pre.exposre nderta#en by

nrsing stdents to these areas, they wold be able to eip the!selves

with the appropriate #nowledge, s#ill and attitde$ Moreover, we were also

able to observe how the nrsing stdents condct their one.on.one retrn

de!onstration of the different nrsing procedres with their clinical

instrctors$ After the said exposre, Mrs$ "hona discssed with s the

i!portant concerns abot ecision Ma#ing, na!ely the ality of the

decision, ti!e ele!ent, and acceptance of sbordinates of the decision$ he

also shared with s sch principles as the aw of the :dge and aw of the

;ench, which play significant roles in decision !a#ing$ he law of the

edge which states that there is always a ti!e when nrse !anagers will

have no choice bt to carry ot the last option possible, whereas, the aw

of the ;ench states abot the i!portance of having a sbstitte in every

decision we !a#e$

ecision !a#ing is really a very critical part of a nrsing ad!inistrator$

:very day, nrse !anagers sch as Mrs$ %alo!ares, being a ean of the

"ollege of 3rsing are constrained by a lot of proble!s challenging her

 position$ I have learned how i!portant are the co!!nication s#ills and

leadership s#ills in carrying ot the responsibilities of a ean$ ;eing an

al!ns of " < "ollege of 3rsing, I was very gratefl that I was

given a chance to visit the s#ills laboratory at the 3rsing Arts =oo! bt

!ost especially, seeing again !y previos clinical instrctors$ Moreover, I

re!e!bered the days when I was once a stdent perfor!ing !y retrn

de!onstration, when I felt so nervos bt excited$ bserving nrsing

stdents doing the retrn de!onstrations !ade !e appreciate how the

" < "ollege of 3rsing contines to perfor! its best to provide

ality nrses$ his exposre I reali-ed that being a nrse !anager, I !st

at all ti!es have a !o!ent! to address whatever is the cli!ate of !y

office, be it iet and cool , or hectic and de!anding$ As Mrs$ "hona

shared to s, she ad!itted that it was really hard to handle diverse

individal, sch as her faclty, staff and stdents, becase each one of s

have different cltral orientation$ he added that, we !st always be a

leader even in or own si!ple way$ *aving this iniry, I was challengedto !a#e a positive change within the field of nrsing ad!inistration in !y

own health instittion$

Action

4hen I will so!eday beco!e a nrse ad!inistrator, sch as a ean, I

wold always re!e!ber the things Mrs$ %alo!ares have shared to se with

regards to decision !a#ing$ It is not easy to !a#e a decision especially if

yo will decide for so!ething that !ay case a negative i!pact on one of

yor sbordinates$ *owever, in ti!es of crisis, I wold always loo# bac# at

the organi-ational goals and address the proble! so as the decision I will

!a#e will not be overpowered by !y own personal decisions$

Evalation

At the end of the hors practic!, I was able to carry ot activities

involving the processes of directing$ Moreover, I was able to perfor!

doc!entary analysis of the patientDs charts and was able to attend one of

the staff develop!ent progra! carried ot by the hospital nrsing service

depart!ent which was sponsored by the staff nrses of nrse station 7

regarding e!ergency !edical response$

Day 4

C – E – R – A – E

April 2, 2011 (hrsday)

Context 4henever necessary, corrective action or plan !odification ta#es place to

ensre organi-ational goals are acco!plished$ "ontrolling is the critical

fnction of !anage!ent that !easres and evalates whether the strategies

set and plans !ade are carried ot$ As !anage!ent involves directing theactivities of personnel, the controlling fnction ai!s to ensre that

everyone does what shold be done$ According to /en-on (200+), the

controlling process opens opportnities for i!prove!ent and co!paring

perfor!ance against a set of standards$ It provides infor!ation abot how

well processes and people fnction so that they can be !otivated to

 perfor! better in the ftre$

Experience

he forth day of or practic! gave s a chance to observe and discss

with the chief 3rse the aspect on controlling and directing$ irecting

involves delegation < that is, !a#ing other people do the 9ob for yo for as

long as they are capable of$ It involves pdating of policies and procedres,

spervision and !onitoring of personnel, coordination, co!!nication,

and staff develop!ent sch as reglar condct of clinical nrsing pdates$

@ro! the previos day, day 7, we were able to witness how delegation was

carried ot by the "M" 3rsing ervice epart!ent$ Mrs /erendia

e!phasi-ed that >effective co!!nication is basic to good h!an

relationships$? 4e were also able to discss the tandards of 3rsing

%ractice with e!phasis on the tandard I which involves the 3rsing

%rocess inclding its trctre, %rocess and tco!e criteria$ I can also

say that the Eality Assrance of "M" is well established$ he personnel

evalation sheet of their staff was well strctred$ ifferent personnel have

their own set of evalation sheet, which is good, in the sense that they

every ite! or criteria written is distinct fro! the other depending on their

specific 9ob description$ I have also learned that fro! the three criteria of

Eality Assrance (EA), the %rocess and tco!e criteria provide a !ore

direct !easres of ality nrsing care, bt between the two, the %rocess

criteria is the !ore preferred !easre$

R eflection >:ffective co!!nication is basic to good h!an relationship$? his is

indeed tre$ As I have observed, the sccess of "M" was !ainly de to

the co!!on nderstanding shared by each and every personnel$ taff

nrses sed co!!nication !axi!ally as they assess their patientDs needs,

!a#ing nrsing care plans and i!ple!ent and evalate the effectiveness of

sch care$ "o!!nication also facilitates coordination$ his enhances

collaborative efforts reslting in efficient, s!ooth and har!onios flow of

wor#$

Action

4ith regards to the process of directing and controlling, difficlties occr

when lac# of coordination and co!!nication exist between staff$ It is

hard to direct other people to do a 9ob if the person is not !otivated and

does not have the free will to do so$ Moreover, a nitDs ob9ective and the

goals of an organi-ation canDt be sccessflly achieved if the staff does not

pt their efforts for it$ @or these things to be prevented, we !st carry ot

and act ot based on the tandards of 3rsing %ractice$ %roper !otivational

strategies !st also be carried ot to address the case of n!otivated

staff$ e to econo!ic and financial difficlties we encontered day by

day, we #now that the n!ber one !otivation for staff is !oney which

!ay be given in the for! of increased salary or even bonses to deserving

staff$

Evalation

At the end of hors practic!, I was able to i!prove !y #nowledge and

nderstanding with regards to the third phase of the 3rsing Manage!ent

%rocess, which are, directing and controlling$ I was also able to observe the

"hief 3rse as she perfor!s her roles and fnctions, and relate these with

the said processes$

Day 5

C – E – R – A – E

April 26, 2011 (@riday)

Context

3rsing !anage!ent focses on planning, organi-ing, directing and

controlling all activities of the nrsing syste!$ 3rsing !anage!ent can be

defined as a process of coordinating actions and allocating resorces to

achieve organi-ation goals of the health care delivery syste! (Asperas, et$

al$ 2005)$ In whatever setting nrses wor#, they have to learn and ad9st to

the co!plex interrelationships between and a!ong service nits, patients

and the ad!inistration$ hey have to #now their place and their specific

roles in the organi-ational hierarchy$ hey will find in varying levels that

they have to !anage people, their clients or patients, their resorces and

their ti!e$ his dayDs activity is focsed !ainly on the actal shadowing of

the "hief 3rseDs role and the application of the !anage!ent processes

discssed fro! the previos days$

Page 13: Daily Cerae Academe

Experience

his day gave s the opportnity to actally play the role of the "hief

3rse$ ince this is the last day of or practic!, Mrs$ /erendia distribted

each of s to the different stations and !ade s observe how her staff

nrses execte their respective roles$ I was assigned in tation 2 with a bed

capacity of 72$ It covers the fe!ale !edical ward, pedia ward, isolation

roo! and so!e private roo!s$ here were 7 staff nrses on dty, 2

!idwives and 1 orderly$ As I observed, nrses are well groo!ed, they deal

well with their patients, althogh so!e did not wear their cap and id$ I

have also noticed that they are well coordinated with each other$ 4hen I

interviewed the head nrse of station 2 and as#ed her abot the co!!on

proble!s encontered in their nit, she said that co!!only they have

difficlties !eeting the wants of their patients and so!eti!es with their

physicians$ In addition to these, they also have proble!s in the ti!e

!anage!ent especially dring their endorse!ent$ he !ain reason for this

according to the! is !ainly becase of the increased n!ber of patients as

co!pared to other stations becase they cater the wards$

R eflection

his day !ade !e feel the essence of being a chief nrse$ he staff see!ed

conscios of their actions and paid high respect on the position of the "hief

3rse$ I have felt how essential is the role of the "hief 3rse in the

sccess of an organi-ation$ After this exposre, I have reali-ed the need for

!e to perfor! better in the application of the !anage!ent processes$ he

learning I acired were exceptional in the sense that yo can never feel

how hard it is to be in a top level position in the organi-ation not nless,

yoDve got a chance to experience it$

Action    3o organi-ation is perfect$ ch as "M" althogh the nrsing service is

well organi-ed and well strctred, still, negative forces are present to

challenge it$ hat is why, it needs to constantly be ad9sted to adapt tothese changes$ "arrying ot the !anage!ent processes is essential for a

sccessfl ad!inistration$ Althogh these processes are syste!atic, it is

also interrelated$ espite the difficlties encontered by the organi-ation, I

wold 9st #eep in !ind to consider the principles learned regarding

!anage!ent to address these$ here is always a soltion to every proble!,

Page 14: Daily Cerae Academe

what !atters is the way yo carry ot the process$ hs, what is i!portant

is the >howF? and >whyF? rather that the >whatF? or >whoF?

Evalation

At the end of the hors practic!, I was able to relate the #ey fnctions

of the chief nrse with the !anage!ent processes$ I was able to ass!e the

role of Mrs$ /erendia in doing the ward ronds$ In addition, I was also able

to witness how the staff nrses of station 2 carry ot their dties in

accordance with their respective 9ob description$
