Societalgrowth
and
demand
on
water
resourceshaveresultedinincreased
eutrophicationandpollution,oftenresulting
inharmfulalgalblooms.Toxinsproducedby
cyanobacterialalgalbloomsarefoundin
manyofSouthAfricasfreshwatersystems,andareathreattopublicandecosystemhealth.
Thereisanincreasingneedforroutine
observationsofwaterquality,allowing
improvementof
knowledgeand
risk
managementandquantitativeassessment
oftheextentofeutrophication.Thereis
currentlyinsufficientknowledgeand
informationonthestatusandtrendsof
waterqualityandeutrophicationand
substantialgapsinavailabledataarchivesRemotesensingcanplayacrucialrolein
determiningwaterqualitystatusacross
manywaterbodiesinacosteffectiveand
routinemanner;withanabilitytomakea
considerablecontribution
to
both
operationalmonitoringsystems,and
ecosystemresearch.
