• A dead plant and animal leaves behind nutrients and energy in the organic material that made up its body. Scavengers can feed on the carcass but unused energy and nutrients are still left behind.
• Biomass – bones, feathers, fur, insect exoskeletons, wood, leaves, feces
• Decomposers release the remaining carbon dioxide and nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus
• Decomposers: Fungus, bacteria, worms, and insects.

• An energy pyramid shows the flow of energy in a community. Each level represents different groups of organisms that could make up a food chain. The bottom level indicates producers, and the other levels are consumers. At each level, about 90% of the
energy is used by the organism. Only 10% is available to be passed on to the organism that eats it (the next trophic level)
