Great Depression
• An economic catastrophe that affected everyone in the US.
• Hit African-Americans particularly hard.
• Blacks in the north and south experienced lower employment rates and decline of income worse than any other race.
Black Protests
• NAACP continued to press for civil rights even though the economy was a wreck.
• Charles Houston took over the organization and won quite a bit inthe courts against segregation.
• NAACP supported Roosevelt who won the election and enacted the New Deal.
New Deal
• New Deal was the plan to bring the country out of the Depression
• The New Deal helped whites muchmore than it helped African-Americans.
• Roosevelt accepted blacks in hisadministration, first president to do so.
• AA were more included in theSecond New Deal.
Communist Party
• The Communist Party began to reach out to blacks and assist in their fight for civil rights.
• Basically trying torecruit AA to theirparty.
• Most blacks wereunlikely to becomecommunists.
Tuskegee Study
• 1930s saw the worst manifestation of racism in American science.
• Purpose was to chart the course of untreated syphilis.
• 622 men, 431 had the disease were told they were being treated butthey weren’t. It was simply a study on how bad the disease could get.
• Program lasted 40 years, wasn’t known until 1972.
