Design Strategies of a Passive House
“Maximize your gains, minimize your losses”. These are the basic tenants ofthe Passive House approach. A Passive House project maximizes the energyefficiency of the basic building components inherent in all buildings; roof,walls, windows, floors and the utility systems: electrical, plumbing &mechanical. By minimizing a building's energy losses, the mechanical systemis not called to replenish the losses nearly as frequently, saving resources,operational costs and pollution. Unlike any other structures, Passive Housebuildings maintain occupant comfort for more hours of the year without theneed for mechanical temperature conditioning of the indoor air. The oppositehas been the norm in this country with a history of inexpensive fuel andconstruction techniques with little consideration for energy losses throughthermal bridging, air-infiltration, let alone being conscious of using some oreven any insulation. The Passive House approach focuses on the following:
Strategic Design and PlanningPassive House projects are carefully modeled and evaluated for efficiency atthe design stage. Certified Passive House Consultants (CPHC) are trainedto use the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP), a tool that allowsdesigners to test “what-if” scenarios before construction begins. They arealso trained to use other software tools to identify and address potentialthermal bridges and moisture issues at the design stage.
Specific Climate, Siting and SizingPassive House design uses detailed, specific annual weather data inmodeling a structure’s performance. Orientation of the windows canmaximize or minimize solar gain and shading. Passive House theory leanstowards minimizing the surface area to interior volume ratio, favoring anefficient shape to minimize energy losses.
Efficient SystemsThrough fitting buildings designed to the Passive House Standard withefficient appliances, hot water distribution, and energy efficient lighting,electricity consumption is also slashed by 50% compared to the averagehousing stock, without any loss of convenience. Most Passive Houseresidential ventilation systems, for instance, are typically driven by ahighly efficient motor only consuming 40w.
Alternative EnergyThe significant reduction in energy use, allows alternative energy topower a greater percentage of a buildings demands. Likewise smallerdemand equates to smaller and more affordable alternative energysystems providing higher cost-benefit value. Passive House design puts aproject within reach for achieving true “Net Zero” performance (thebuilding generates as much energy as it uses).
Performance Criteria & Certification
Performance Criteria1. Maximum Heating or Cooling Energy: 4.750 kBtu/ft2 per year2. Maximum Total Source Energy: 38 kBtu/ft2 per year(“Source Energy” by definition includes the energy required to produceand deliver the energy to the site, and can be offset with solar thermaland other measures. Photovoltaics cannot be used to offset this energy,but are recognized, at this time.)3. Maximum Air Leakage: 0.6 ACH @ 50 Pa< 0.6 air changes per hour at 50 Pascals (ACH50)
In addition, the following are recommendations which vary based onspecific climate region:• Window u-value ≤ 0.14 Btu/hr-ft2-°F (0.8 W/m2/K)• Ventilation system with heat recovery with ≥ 75% efficiency with lowelectric consumption @ 0.68 W/cfm/ft3 (0.45 Wh/m3)• Thermal bridge free construction ≤ 0.006 Btu/hr-ft-°F (0.01 W/mK)
Verification/CertificationPassive House performance is verified by review of the data in thePassive House Planning Package (PHPP) energy model, a third partyverified blower door test, a formal record of adjustment of the ventilationsystem, a declaration by the construction supervisor, and photographicdocumentation.
History
The roots of Passive House trace back to the 1970s, when the conceptsof superinsulation and passive solar management techniques weredeveloped in the United States and Canada. In the 1990s Europeanscientists refined and augmented these concepts to develop the PassiveHouse standard and design techniques, which were tailored to theCentral European climate zone.
German-born architect Katrin Klingenberg studied with Dr. WolfgangFeist, a German Passive House pioneer, in Darmstadt, Germany. Shealso studied in the United States at Ball State University and believed thatPassive House could work and thrive in the United States. She provided aproof of concept by building her own Passive House in Urbana, Ill., in2003. The single-family two-story was the first Passive House building inthe United States.
Klingenberg collaborated with construction manager Mike Kernagis tobuild, in partnership with the City of Urbana, Ill., several affordablehousing Passive Houses. In 2007 they founded the Passive HouseInstitute US (PHIUS). Since then PHIUS has trained and certifiedhundreds of Certified Passive House professionals The development ofPassive House in the North America has grown exponentially since, withupwards of 100 projects completed in 2011 and many more in process.These professionals have accumulated an invaluable body of real worldexperience, adapting Passive House principles to meet the challenges ofNorth America's widely varied and extreme climate zones.

Advanced Windows and DoorsHistorically these items are the weak link of a building’s envelope andthermal defense system. Passive House places significant emphasis onspecifying high performance windows and doors to address this concern. Tomeet the high performance needs of various climate zones, windows mustmeet strict performance standards regarding: component insulation, airtightness, installation and solar heat gain values.
Energy Recovery VentilationThe “lungs” of a Passive House come from a box called a heat (or energy)recovery ventilator (HRV/ERV). It provides a constant supply of tempered,filtered fresh air 24/7 and saves money by recycling the indoor energy that istypically found in exhaust air. The heat from outgoing stale air is transferredto the unconditioned incoming fresh air, while it is being filtered. It provides ahuge upgrade in indoor air quality and consistent comfort, especially forpeople sensitive to material off-gassing, allergies and other air-borneirritants.
HeatingOne of the best benefits to implementing Passive House design is the highperformance shell and extremely low annual energy demand. This allowsowners to save on operational costs as they can now significantly downsizea building’s mechanical system. Passive solar gains, plus heat fromoccupants and appliances supply most of the needed heat. Thus, PassiveHouse design puts a project within reach for achieving true “Net Zero”performance (the building generates as much energy as it consumes overthe course of a year), making use of alternative energy systems smaller thusmore affordable and attainable.
Super-Insulated EnvelopeTo keep the heating/cooling in, wall assemblies require greater insulationvalues to “stop the conditioned air” from leaving. Walls are typically twiceas thick as today’s standard construction, for good reason. Wallassemblies are analyzed to allow for proper water and moisturemanagement to make a long lasting and an exceptionally healthy building.
Thermal Bridge-Free DetailingBreaks in the insulation layer usually caused by structural elements andutility penetrations in the building envelope create a “thermal bridge,”allowing undesirable exterior temperatures to migrate to and “un-do”expensive interior conditioned air. Passive House design attempts toeliminate thermal bridges via progressive mindful architectural detailing.
Air-Tight Envelope (But Diffusion Open)Anyone who has been in an older drafty home understands how stoppingunconditioned air from squeezing to the inside, effects comfort and theefficiency of the mechanical system. Passive House takes great care indesigning, constructing and testing the envelope for an industry-leadingcontrol of air leakage to the interior. Blower door testing is a mandatorytechnique in assuring high performance. Walls are designed to be virtuallyair tight, while allowing water vapors to dry out providing an excellentstrategy to maintain a healthy environment.

1. Water Control Layer A sheet, spray or trowel-applied membrane or material layer that controls the passage of liquid water.2. Air Control Layer Air control layers are materials designed and constructed to control air flow across a building enclosure.3. DIVISION 1: GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
CONTRACT SUMMARY
THE SCOPE OF WORK IN GENERAL INCLUDES THE CONSTRUCTION OF ANEW 2 ½ STORY RESIDENCE ON A VACANT LOT IN SCRANTON, PA.THE NEW RESIDENCE SHALL UTILIZE CITY WATER, GAS, ANDSEWERAGE HOOK UPS.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
ALL WORK SHALL COMPLY WITH ALL PREVAILING CODES, INCLUDINGTHE LOCAL AND COUNTY BUILDING CODES IN THE STATE OFPENNSYLVANIA AND THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE ENERGYCONSERVATION CODES, NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE, THE NATIONALSTANDARD PLUMBING CODE. THE PRIMARY CODE REFERENCE IS THE2009 INTERNATIONAL RESIDENTIAL FOR ONE AND TWO FAMILYDWELLINGS. (2009 IRC).
CONTRACTOR SHALL PERFORM ALL WORK REQUIRED FOR THECOMPLETION OF THE PROJECT WHETHER OR NOT INDICATED ON THEDRAWINGS. THE INTENTION OF THE DRAWINGS IS TO SHOWMATERIAL RELATIONSHIPS FOR THE COMPLETE AND PROPERFUNCTIONING OF THE ENTIRE PROJECT.

THE CONTRACTOR SHALL MAINTAIN A CLEAN AND SAFE WORKINGENVIRONMENT AND REMOVE ALL DEBRIS FROM THE CONSTRUCTIONSITE ON A DAILY BASIS.

DIVISION 2: SITEWORK
FIELD ENGINEERING
THE CONTRACTOR SHALL STAKE OUT THE ENTIRE FOUNDATION FOR THEADDITIONS AND SET THE EXACT ELEVATIONS FOR THE NEW WORK ASDRAWN. CONTRACTOR SHALL WALK SITE AND INDICATE SITE ELEVATIONSFOR APPROVAL BY THE ARCHITECT AND OWNER AS CONSISTENT WITHTHE CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS. SITE ELEVATIONS WILL BE SET TOINSURE DRAINAGE AWAY FROM STRUCTURES AND TO COMPLY WITH THELOCAL REQUIREMENTS. ARCHITECT SHALL REVIEW NEW GRADING WITHCONTRACTOR BEFORE EXCAVATION BEGINS.
SITE PREPARATION AND MAINTENANCE
THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROTECT ALL SITE UTILITIES THROUGHOUTEXCAVATION AND CONSTRUCTION.
THE CONTRACTOR SHALL INSTALL AND MAINTAIN PROTECTION FOR TREES,LANDSCAPE AREAS AND TOPOGRAPHY AS SHOWN IN THE DOCUMENTS ORBY THE ARCHITECT ON SITE. NO HUMAN OR MACHINE TRAFFIC, NOSTOCKPILING OF MATERIALS OR DUMPING OF WASTE MATERIALS ORLIQUIDS SHALL BE ALLOWED IN AREAS DESIGNATED BY STORM ORCONSTRUCTION FENCING OR TREE PROTECTION ENCLOSURES. FULLRESTITUTION WILL BE REQUIRED FOR DAMAGE TO TREES, PLANTMATERIALS AND SOIL STRUCTURE.
THE CONTRACTOR SHALL WALK THE SITE WITH THE ARCHITECT PRIOR TOTHE START OF WORK, TO DISCUSS SITE CONTAINMENT FENCING ANDSTRAW BALE DIKE LAYOUT AS WELL AS LOCATIONS FOR TEMPORARYSTORAGE OF TOPSOIL, MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES, AND MATERIALS TO BEDUMPED.

DEMOLITION
THE CONTRACTOR SHALL REMOVE ALL EXISTING MATERIAL INTERFERINGWITH THE PROPOSED NEW WORK OR AS REQUIRED BY INDICATION OFNEW WORK.
