Overview of Interventions in Nigeria
NAFDAC national stakeholders awareness program on aflatoxin.
Stakeholders awareness and training program on aflatoxin i.e. CADP, Nestle .
Development of aflatoxin testing centers i.e. NAFDAC, Poultry industry.
Manufacturing facility built for production of aflasafe.
AgResult Aflasafe project: Incentivizing farmers to adopt the use of aflasafe.
National stakeholders awareness program on Aflatoxin
Stakeholder Workshops and awareness on
aflatoxin led by NAFDAC were held with
diverse stakeholders across three regions at
16 states in Nigeria.
NAFDAC awareness television program
(NAFDAC and Health) on aflatoxin in three
national television stations.
National awareness program on aflatoxin
through Nigeria National Television
Authority (NTA) broadcasted on the
network program nationwide.

AgResult Aflasafe project
Pull mechanism – Aflasafe is one of the first three pilots
Provides incentives after demonstrating adoption.
Private sector driven, but focused on smallholder groups.
Implementers provide credit, inputs and technical services to increase yield.
Aflasafe purchased at cost to improve quality.
Maize tested for aflasafe strains; if present in large frequency, the implementers incentivized with $18.75/ton maize.
Implementers negotiate maize sale at premium.
Project provides aflatoxin awareness, training of implementers, and identifies potential market linkages.
Target: 260,000 tons of aflatoxin reduced maize in 4 years.
Goal To improve the health and livelihood of smallholder farmers in Nigeria
Long-term outcome (5 year)
Increase consumption of quality maize
Improve smallholder incomes
Medium-term outcome (3 year)
Short-term outcome (1 year)
Outputs
Activities and initiatives
Increase availability of quality maize
Increase smallholder sale of maize in downstream markets
Increase treatment of crops with AflasafeTM
Increase smallholder maize yields
Administration of the pull mechanism including marketing, promotion, verification and disbursement of funds
Program Evaluation of
output harvested and
collected
Participant Support to farmers to increase
yields
Participant Distribution of AflasafeTM to smallholders
Program Evaluation of
AflasafeTM prevalence

Forecast for four years
Through AgResults intervention, it is expected that the total production of aflasafe™-treated / afaltoxin reduced maize would exceed 260,000 tons in four years, equivalent to around 3% of current maize production in Nigeria,
Of which 60,000 tons are estimated to be consumed on-farm and 200,000 tons would be sold in markets.
We will also deliver health benefits from reduced aflatoxin consumption among over 70,000 smallholder family members, not including downstream maize consumers.

Nine Implementers worked with
3,500 farmers . 50,000 tons of
Aflasafe purchased and
applied to 50,000h of
farmland in five States in Nigeria.
7,100 tons of treated maize are were aggregated and undergoing
