GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
This exhibit is open to members of the
Okotoks Art Gallery to express their
individual interpretation of the theme. The
subjects could be anything the artist longs
to honour. Will the themes come from life
experience and be similar? Will the viewer
relate to one or many of the pieces? This
promises to be a unique members’ exhibit.
Members are required to drop off their
work on Tuesday, January 3 at the gallery.
for more information on how to become
a member, please call the gallery at

GRAiN ELEVATORS
Stark and imposing, grain elevators hold a
special place in the hearts of western folk.
They are a metaphor for a way of life. They
symbolize our agricultural heritage, which
is the lifeblood of the prairies. Though near
extinction, the memory of grain elevators
remains near and dear to prairie hearts.
This club, the Heritage Rug Hookers of
Saskatoon, is made up of a diverse group
of women of all ages and professions. They
come together due to their shared passion
for traditional rug hooking. Recently,
they undertook an ambitious project of
surveying Canadian artists to determine if
there was any interest in hooking pictorial
rugs depicting grain elevators. The result is
over 30 artists from all across Canada and
40 completed pieces. The rugs began their
gallery tour in Saskatchewan in 2010, and
have then moved on to Manitoba, british
Columbia, and now here in Okotoks,
Alberta.

A LADY’S JOURNEY
Tharrie Zietsman grew up on an African
farm filled with hours of drawing, painting
and modeling with clay from the riverbed.
followed by a degree and grad-degree in
fine Arts (and teaching) she trained as a
marionette designer, maker and operator
and later appointed as head of the prop
shop for drama, ballet and opera for a
performing arts company.
This exhibit, A Lady’s Journey, will take
viewers on a whimsical tour of how we
ladies journey through life – some on pigs
(courage), some on a mouse (orderly and
methodical), some on a bee (busy, busy,
busy), and what we choose to accompany
us – burdens or dreams in the air.
We make this journey only once - whether
as the burdened servant on the donkey or
the heart that knows true north (like the
goose). The quest then: do you like your
journey or have you forgotten that the
choices are all yours? We are all Ladies on
a Journey.

ART AS A MEDiTATiON
Meditation can be described as having a
steady mind. Usually it requires sitting very
still and focusing on a singular idea such
as breathing. brian Clute has applied this
concept to his painting process. Having the
process take a long time, with a small round
brush applying layered, diminutive strokes
on the canvas, results in the reduction
of restlessness and speed, and the mind
becomes more even. The finished painting
doesn’t require anything special from
the viewer; however, the artist hopes the
process will produce a sense of calm when
the body of works are viewed together.

kilograms of utilitarian ceramics and art
items during that period. for the past 6
years, bob has been working with steel,
making boxes, tables and sculptural pieces,
while Connie continues her ceramic work in

Since the 1920s when the Surrealists
developed the art form known as
collage, it has continued to inspire artists
who seek to explore the unknown. by
combining unrelated imagery, the collage
process creates unexpected mixtures and
unsettling relationships. The challenge of
collage is to rethink what is a comfortable
understanding of the individual, everyday
images and to re-consider them in
light of their new complex, improbable
circumstance. Although not the actual cut
and paste process of traditional collage,
Witschl’s paintings use a collage approach
to mix stereotypically anxiety-making
images such as sharp objects, warning signs
and falling objects with content from her
personal storehouse of worrisome events,
bad dreams and general nervousness.

iN MY DREAM i WAS ALMOST THERE |
JULiAN FORREST
May 4 to June 10 | Large gallery
This exhibit includes paintings that are the
result of Julian’s ongoing fascination with
pop culture representations of (primarily)
men – both allegorically and literally.
“by dissecting mass-consumed and
frequently internet-sourced imagery, the
(re) imagining or (re) interpreting pictures,
i am interested in developing loose and
often ironic narratives around themes of
power, tension, individuality and place. i
approach my work as a continuum, where
thematic issues are raised and examined,
with subtleties varying as each new body
unfolds. Stylistically i cannibalize imagery
that feels either symbolic or emblematic and
recycle these parts in subsequent reworked
canvases. My paintings reference the
source material, the found photos, but are
reconfigured to speak to ideas of memory,
nostalgia and identity.
Ultimately, i love contradictions and
juxtapositions, and of course, paint.”

PRAiRiE SENTiNELS:OKOTOKS GRAiN ELEVATORS
January 6 to February 5 | Temporary Photo
Exhibit
The Okotoks landscape was once dotted
by five grain elevators that for decades
served the agricultural community. These
prairie sentinels have all vanished with
only the Okotoks Seed Cleaning Plant –

the art exhibits at the Okotoks Art Gallery,
the museum’s temporary photo exhibit will
pay tribute to the grain elevators that have
vanished from the Okotoks landscape.
Along the Sheep River: Stories of Okotoks
presents the history of Okotoks in a vibrant
and engaging way. This permanent exhibit
explores Okotoks’ special landscape,
compelling characters, and bright
future. Set within the renovated walls
of Heritage House, visitors will discover
what it truly means to be an Okotokian.
Photos and artifacts help bring to life
the stories of the town’s rich natural and
cultural heritage.
Discover how the meandering Sheep
River has shaped the land and people for
thousands of years. Uncover pioneer spirit
in those first adventurous souls who dared
to set up shop and set down roots. Explore
cycles of boom and bust and understand
how Okotoks is creating a green future.
Connect to Okotoks’ cultural community
and discover some of the fascinating
people who have helped make Okotoks
the dynamic town it is today.
