Crickhowell, at the centre of a vibrant community of artists, will again this year be at the heart of the eagerly awaited annual Crickhowell Open Studio weekend.

During the Spring Bank Holiday weekend of 23 to 25 May artists and makers will invite visitors into their private studios and homes or exhibit and promote their work in beautiful shared spaces throughout the region. The event is marked by the generosity and support of artists and the community who offer exhibition and display space, financial support and donate much time to promote the event widely.

The 3 day event creates the perfect opportunity to explore during a pleasant day out, meet artists, be inspired by their art and purchase something to give lasting pleasure. The 29 venues will this year include selected work in the second Crickhowell Open Art Competition, bringing the number of exhibiting artists across the area during the weekend to well over 200.

Enjoy the rich heritage and beauty of the area while you follow the distinctive red arrows with venue numbers in Crickhowell and further afield to discover artists, makers and designers who work in a wide variety of disciplines including painting, printmaking, photography, textiles, sculpture, glass and forged ironwork. Most of the work on display will be for sale and many artists will be happy to accept commissions or open their studios by appointment at other times of the year.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Charity Art AuctionThe Oriel CRiC Gallery will over the Remembrance Day period in November 2015 be the venue for an Art auction hosted by Major General The Reverend R M Llewellyn CB OBE DL, in aid of Army Benevolent Fund – The Soldiers’ Charity. The ABF is the Army’s National Charity, helping soldiers, veterans and families from every conflict. It is hoped to raise significant funds for the charity while showcasing artists’ work and spending a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

The charity was established in 1944 to ensure that the hardships endured by soldiers in the aftermath of 1914–18 were never repeated. The needs of servicemen and women who have suffered in the recent conflicts in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan and many other parts of the world are also acute and urgently need to be addressed. This includes many from Wales and the Border Counties.

Help is often provided with the everyday things which can be life-changing to the beneficiaries; support with care home fees, training courses or home adaptations. Further details on the charity can be found on www.soldierscharity.org

If you would like further information, would like to receive an invitation to the auction or would like to support the event in any way, please email [email protected] or contact Morgan Llewellyn c/o Oriel CRiC Gallery, CRiC, Beaufort Street, Crickhowell, NP8 1BN.

Meet the Artistsin the Oriel CRiC GalleryAlison Fennell (A) Alison Fennell’s watercolour paintings have a vibrant, chimerical charm making her originals, prints and card range a very popular addition to the gallery. She will be demonstrating her fresh watercolour techniques at CRiC between 10am and 12.30pm on Saturday 23rd May 2015 with a view to offering a watercolour workshop at CRiC later in the year.

Celestine and the Hare (B) Better known as ‘Celestine and the Hare’, Karin Hines is a fibre artist who needle felts small creatures from her little shed workshop in Monmouth, Wales. Each creature she makes has a unique character, charm and mischief of its own. Her sense of fun and nostalgia and a love of the forgotten, small, passed over and missed things are manifested in the charming felted creatures she makes from sheep fleece (with occasional use of camel, alpaca, silk fibres etc) pipe cleaner legs so they can be posed and glass beads for eyes.

Karin will be sharing the process of creation on Sunday 24 May between 11am and 3pm. There will be the opportunity to sign up for a workshop later in the year. A few of her creations will also find their way into the gallery where they may tempt you to take them home.

Ann Notley (C)Textile artist Ann Notley lives locally and regularly exhibits her beautifully executed stumpwork in the Oriel CRiC Gallery. She has been invited to show her work later this year at the National Botanical Garden of Wales. This form of three dimensional embroidery has its roots in the 17th century, but is now widely used in contemporary textile art. Ann uses her embroidery to recreate in stitch the abundance of wildflowers and insects that can be found where she lives on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The stitched figures are raised from the surface of the work to create a three dimensional effect.

During the course of the morning of Monday 25 May Ann will be stitching and showing how she creates these beautiful miniature treasures which delight so many of our visitors.

St Edmund’s Church 12Church Lane, Crickhowell, NP8 1BB.

Sat 23 May: 10am–5pm, Sun 24 May: 10am–5pm, Mon 25 May: 10am–5pm.

St Edmund’s is the Church in Wales Parish Church of Crickhowell. Built around 1300 by Lady Sybil Pauncefote it is, in itself, well worth a visit. In addition to the exhibited work, there are many items of interest such as the windows by Charles Eamer Kempe and the icon by Rev Brian Bessant. Visitors who enjoy textile art may be interested in the wall hanging of St Edmund designed and created by Elizabeth Brown from Tredegar.

Frances Green (A)A visit to Mystras in the Peloponnese over 20 years ago ignited Frances Green’s interest in icons. After another decade she gathered the courage to paint one herself. She likes the ritual of working in egg tempera on gessoed boards. She also enjoys painting plants in watercolour and acrylic and forages for driftwood and ancient timbers on which to paint. Saints and flowers in egg tempera are her favourite subjects but she also paints in watercolour and acrylic.

Mark Zytynski (B)Mark produces fine art prints and large digital art works of trees, woodlands and landscapes. These works are quite unlike traditional photographs and always generate a great deal of interest at exhibitions and galleries.

He has during the past year published ‘Kensington Gardens Treescapes’ London’s ‘Secret’ Arboretum a book of beautiful tree photography. The plates are punctuated with occasional historical anecdotes, tree facts and poems penned by the author but, mostly, the pictures are left to speak for themselves.

A wonderful array of refreshments which proved very popular in 2014 will once again be for sale in aid of Christian Aid every day during the opening hours of the exhibition.

Kwong Kuen Shan (D)Kwong Kuen Shan is a Chinese artist and writer who was born and educated in Hong Kong. She spent most of her formative years in London and now lives and works in Wales where she paints, writes and teaches Chinese art. She writes and illustrates her own books, combining her paintings with ancient Chinese texts. Her recent solo exhibition was in Paris, and she has another solo exhibition in Milan in June 2015.

Virginia Robotham (F)Virginia has always obtained great enjoyment from her hobby of flower painting in watercolour, landscape paintings, sketching in pen and ink, and printing her own Christmas cards. She has recently started experimenting with scraperboard work. In the past sales of her paintings, cards and handcrafts have enabled her to support several charities and profits from any sales this weekend will be given to St Edmund’s Church.

Minerva Rodriguez (G)Minerva Rodriguez holds a Bachelor Honours degree in Fine Arts from Spain, specialised in Printmaking and Graphic Design. Her experience and international recognition has brought her back to Crickhowell this year to exhibit oil paintings, watercolours, acrylics, jewellery and more. Nature themes and realistic style are the main points in her creations.

Sarah Powell (H)Sarah, who lives in Crickhowell, has become increasingly involved in art and craft since taking early retirement from nursing with ME 6 years ago. Establishing a business under the name of ‘Calon Lan Crafts’, she specialises in wirework jewellery, polymer clay and felting landscapes. The Artworkhouse Gallery19Hatherleigh Place, Union Road West, Abergavenny, NP7 7RL. (T: 01873 854440)

Sat 23 May: 10am–5pm, Sun 24 May: 10am–5pm, Mon 25 May: 10am–5pm.

The Artworkhouse Gallery which is situated within the old workhouse buildings was set up some five years ago by local artist Angela Bowen (A) to provide studio space for herself and other artists, and to develop a newly formed gallery space. At present two other artists, Harriet Lloyd and John Hurst, have their studios there, and with Angela they jointly run the gallery which has presented exhibitions of their own work together with an exciting line-up of exhibitions by local artists and art groups.

The wallpaper and fabrics in Angela Bowen’s paintings create the atmosphere, whilst the furniture and the figures make the space. By using vibrant patterns and a flat colour she can either push objects into view or camouflage them. In contrast Harriet Lloyd uses an assemblage of hand drawn and painted images to create intrigue and narrative to stories of childhood memories and fairy tales. Sometimes everyday objects juxtaposed with the unexpected, result in nostalgic and evocative scenes. John Hurt’s paintings draw on the Welsh landscape and people for inspiration, experimenting with different techniques and styles to develop himself and his work.

During the Open Studios weekend the resident artists will be showing their work to the public and there will also be an exhibition of artwork from Abergavenny Art Group. Established over 75 years ago, the Abergavenny Art Group has participated in the Open Studios weekend for a number of years at different venues. The art group always welcomes newcomers to its membership of like-minded people who get together to discuss their work and exchange advice and tips; professional artists who want to encourage and help others develop their skills; amateur artists who want to improve their skills; and beginners who want to learn to paint, draw and express their ideas on canvas. The group meets twice a month to hold a variety of art demonstrations given by professional artists, talks and practical workshops. The art group has previously exhibited at the Artworkhouse and holds an annual exhibition in Abergavenny in late-July.

For more details about Abergavenny Art Group or The Artworkhouse Gallery visit www.abergavennyartists.co.uk or email [email protected]

Mark is showing his work at the newly restored 19th century chapel, the Tabernacle, now a new exciting venue in Talgarth.

From the centre of Talgarth, 10 miles from Crickhowell on the A479, with the mill on your left, cross the river to Bell Street and follow right to Regent Street. 150 yards on left.

In memoryGetting to know local artists is a singular honour and we would like to pay tribute to Anthony Davies, Marta Lombard and Catharine Marr-Johnson who have passed away during the past year. Their generosity of spirit and generous support of the Open Studio weekend and Oriel CRiC Gallery will be greatly missed.

CRiC cannot accept any liability for any loss, damage or injury sustained by any member of the public while visiting a Crickhowell Open Studio venue. Visitors do so entirely at their own risk. Every effort is made by artists to ensure that their venues are as safe as possible. All copyright remains with the artists.

The Open Studios weekend is the result of great teamwork of CRiC staff members, volunteers and artists. We greatly appreciate the wonderful support from local businesses through advertising, display and exhibition space which helps to create the welcoming atmosphere in the town.
