KEEPING YOUR WORKFORCE SAFE
Now more than ever, safety is at the forefront of every organization by requiring the urgent implementation of many new policies and procedures. As a safety professional, you’re faced with new challenges when it comes to creating a safe, healthy and productive workplace.
• How do employees and visitors enter your facility?• What does the new workstation look like?• How can you regulate common areas?• What do employees need to do when leaving work?
Adjusting to the new normal is both important and challenging. Fortunately, you don’t need to tackle it alone. At MSC, we’re here to help you navigate updated procedures with our solutions, resources and services. Our safety team and supplier partners will work with you not only to select the best products, but to build your programs and policies when it comes to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Facility Safety, Environment Health and Safety (EHS) programs and application specific safety needs. For more resources, products, solutions and services available to update your safety program, visit mscdirect.com/safety or contact your MSC Sales Associate.

COMMUNICATE WITH CLARITY

PRE-SCREENING QUESTIONNAIRE3
ST
EP
• Employees and visitors should arrive wearing a face mask and be informed of procedures.
• Signage outside of your facility should com-municate these procedures, such as wearing a face mask when entering and staying home if they do not feel well.
• Provide instruction on proper put on and take off method of PPE. For example, avoid touching the front exterior of the face mask by handling it with the ear loops when putting it on, wearing it and removing it.
• Use stanchions to physically guide the entry process and create directional paths for entry and exit with floor tape and floor signage.
• To avoid any confusion, use signage to clearly communicate the steps of the process required for entry.
• If possible, provide separate points of entry and exit to prevent congregating during high-traffic times of day, such as shift changes.
• In many ways, adjusting to new policy is a cultural shift. A large part of building successful safety protocols is about clearly defining routes and directional signage.
• Provide a simple set of questions regarding exposure to COVID-19, travel restrictions, and current wellness.
• When possible, share a digital or physical form in advance to expedite the question-naire process.
• If administering your questionnaire in a format that requires a shared device or pens, ensure it is disinfected between each use.
• Ensure the person administering the ques-tionnaire knows the proper procedures based on responses provided.
TEMPERATURE CHECK4
ST
EP
• Consider using an FDA compliant pass/fail touch-less thermal imaging device that allows your team to maintain social distancing by operating from six feet away from the person being tested.
• To get the most accurate reading possible, ensure the person administering the temperature check is properly trained on how to use their screening device and your policies. For example, if you opt to maintain temperature records, they must be confidential.
• As a reminder, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines a fever as a temperature of 100.4°F or greater.
APPROVAL
SANITIZE
ST
EP
ST

6
• Employees and visitors who pass both the questionnaire and temperature check can receive a wristband to indicate approval into the facility. Wristbands can be dated or color coded to reduce the chance of missed screening.
• Empower the person administering your questionnaire and temperature check to turn visitors and employees away if they do not meet criteria. Allow your policies to make approval a clear decision with no room for ambiguity or exceptions.
• Make the sanitization process easier and safer with touchless devices. Eliminating contact with shared surfaces is considered an “Engi- neering Control” by OSHA, and is the first line of defense against workplace hazards.
• Consider one convenient location to deliver entry / exit rules as well as all needed disposable PPE products like disposable masks, gloves, ear plugs and hand sanitizer.
FOLLOWSIGNAGE8STEP
• Use floor tape to create corridors and floor signage, such as one-way traffic markers and six-foot separation reminders, to control the flow of your team and maintain social distancing.
DISPOSABLE PPE7ST
EP
• Ensure easy access to disposable ear loop masks, ear plugs, and eyewear easy for employees and visitors who do not already have this PPE.
• As an alternative to a Wellness Station, visitors can be provided disposable safety packs, which include a disposable ear loop mask, a pair of disposable gloves, and sanitizing wipes.
• Proper PPE is OSHA’s last line of defense against workplace hazards that cannot be eliminated or controlled.

NEW PPE FOR THE DAY

ST

ST
EP
• Use floor tape, signage and plexiglass dividers to enforce social distancing at the workstation or on the production line.
• For commonly used tools, consider providing each employee with their own to avoid tool sharing. If not able to do so, sanitize tools between shifts and employee changeovers.
• MSC’s full line of safety resources, services, solutions and products makes it easy to improve individual workstations to align with OSHA and EHS guidelines.
• In addition to standard task-specific PPE, em- ployers may want to consider adding face shields, eyewear and gloves to their requirements.
• For employees who wear a face shield, it’s recommended that safety glasses and face masks are still worn.
• Consider using machine washable ear loop face masks rather than disposable masks. For many customers, it’s more cost effective to offer five reusable masks per week than allowing em-ployees to use 3 to 5 disposable masks per day.
• Many of MSC’s reusable masks are two-ply, moisture wicking, and are anti-microbial and TAA compliant.
SOCIAL DISTANCING4
ST
EP
• A social distancing policy that is clearly communicated and reinforced through signage and floor marking is one example of an administrative and work practice control, which is OSHA’s second line of defense against workplace hazards.
• To make social distancing easier, deploy additional shifts in order to reduce the number of employees in your facility at any given time. Stagger the start and end times of shifts to eliminate bottlenecks or congregating during a shift changeover.
PROMOTE NEW POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING
• Limit contact in locations like bathrooms and breakrooms by leveraging touchless devices, such as soap dispensers, sanitizer dispensers, air dryers, hands-free door pulls and individual towel dispensers.
• Avoid communal options in breakrooms, such as coffee pots. Instead, offer individually packaged items in an easy-to-grab location.
• Common areas are a great opportunity to communicate new procedures and policies. Use signage in common areas to reinforce your commitment to creating a safe environment.
• Place a MSC Wellness Station in breakrooms to provide both clear communication around your policies as well as access to sanitizer and PPE.
• Use signage, such as room occupancy limits, to help maintain social distancing. Remove chairs and tables to enforce these limits.
• Tabletop barriers can be placed on tables in breakrooms to further enforce social distancing.

FREQUENT DISINFECTING AND PERSONAL HYGIENE
• Encourage employees to frequently disinfect personal items, such as cell phones.
• Remind employees to thoroughly wash or sanitize their hands frequently throughout the day, especially before breaks where they’ll be using their hands to eat or drink.
• Increase frequency of cleaning and volume of cleaning supplies. Consider providing each member of your team with a disinfecting spray bottle and wipes to use throughout the facility.

EXIT SAFELY
ARRIVING AT HOME
• Employees should thoroughly wash their hands when arriving at home, especially before interacting with personal items and family.
• Machine washable face masks should be washed after a day of use.
• Provide employees with one mask for each day of the workweek if you opt to provide reusable masks.
• Employees should remove and disinfect all job-specific PPE.
• Require employees to disinfect their workstation and tools between all shifts and frequently throughout the day.

• Use designated exits and one-way signage to reduce cross traffic at shift changes.
• Employees should keep masks on when exiting and, to prevent the mask from touching their personal items, place it in a plastic bag after removing it.
• We recommend training your team on best practices for handling face masks. Most notably, avoid touching the front exterior of the mask when removing or applying it by handling masks with the ear loops.
