Communication FailuresContribute to DisastersWednesday, November 20, 2013 |11:00 AM 12:00 PM

Resource Integration Program, ORAU
This presentation explores the critical
role that interpersonal communication
failures played in contributing to selected
disasters, examines common themes,
and suggests a model that provides
insight into how communication failurecontributes to adverse events. Occupying
the privileged position of, 1) having
access to more information than each
individual involved in these events, and,
2) the luxury of time to reflect on their
interactions, we can better understand
how communication failures contributed
to decisions made by accomplished
professionals in difficult situations.

This session will introduce Closed
Points of Dispensing (Closed PODs)
or Workplace PODs for life-saving
medication during a bioterrorism attack.
If such an attack would occur in your
area, the health department would have
48 hours to distribute medication to all
residents in your county. They are likelyto become overwhelmed quickly, as they
dont have the manpower for such an
effort. We will discuss the current project
with Dallas County, and the project we
implemented in St. Louis County, to
partner with large employers who will
distribute the medication to employees
and their families.
