You can have confidence in Tanalith®
copper based preservatives
The original Tanalith® E formulations using
the unique copper and azole preservative
system were developed and patented for
the European market in the early 1990’s in
response to increasing regulatory pressure
on chromium and arsenic containing pre-
servatives. Since those times copper based
preservatives have become the dominant
and most widely used treatments globally
particularly for residential and other non-
industrial use wood products. They com-
bine robust protection for wood against
decay and insects with high levels of safety
and convenience for users.
Remember these important tips for use of Tanalith® treated wood
products;
All end cuts, rebates, drill holes and notches should be resealed
with an approved “in-can” supplementary timber protective such
as Tanalised® Enseal. It is recommended not to place cut ends into
ground contact.
All sawn timber products in outdoor situations are recommended
to be painted, stained or sealed for best performance against dis-
colouration, mould and dimensional distortion. Even a simple
fence paint can make a dramatic difference to the appearance of a
timber structure after a few years weathering.
Use hot dipped galvanized steel or other corrosion resistant fas-
teners for all exterior timber applications. For heavy load fasten-
ers (≥ 6 mm thick), when in contact with high retention treated
wood (H4 & H5), for permanent structures (50 year expected
service life) or in proximity to sea water, stainless steel (type
316) is recommended.
You will never regret the small additional costs of taking these
steps when you appreciate the long term benefits of durable out-
door timber structures protected with Tanalith® copper based
preservative.
Dispose of treated wood wastes properly. Do not burn treated
wood for heating, cooking or as a means of disposal.

Tanalith® Copper Based Preservatives
Product Formulation
Tanalith® E Copper and azole fungicides
(propiconazole and tebuconazole) in a
solution form
Tanalith® Eµ Copper and azole fungicides
(propiconazole and tebuconazole) in a
dispersed or suspension form
Tanalith® Q Copper and quaternary ammonium fungi-
cide DDAC (didecyl dimethyl ammonium
carbonate) in a solution form.
See individual product data sheets for full details.
Lonza Wood Protection offer a range of copper based pre-
servatives for protection of wood and timber products
used in general outdoor and ground contact use. These
advanced preservatives incorporate copper in combina-
tion with azole or quaternary ammonium co-biocide wood
protection system.
Solution Copper:
Tanalith® E and Tanalith® Q incorporate a solution form of
copper and co-biocides where the copper is present as an
ethanolamine complex hence the dark blue colour. This
form of copper is suitable for treatment of the widest
range of different species including hardwoods and re-
fractory or difficult to treat softwoods such as Red Baltic
pine (Pinus sylvestris) and similar.
Dispersed Copper:
Tanalith® Eµ uses copper in a dispersed or micronised
form where the copper is present as a very fine suspen-
sion in water. This form of copper has some important
advantages and is suitable for treatment of permeable
species such as Radiata pine and Southern Yellow pine
(Pinus elliottii and similar).
Treatment Plant and Processing:
Tanalith® copper based preservatives are intended for use
through approved industrial pressure treatment facilities
only. Conventional water borne treatment plants and treat-
ment processes are suitable. Some plant and process modifi-
cations may be required if changing from CCA (copper chromi-
um arsenate) preservative. All wood and timber products
must be dry (< 20% M.C.) and clean for treatment. Contact
Lonza for further details.
Optional Additives:
Lonza has a range of optional additives such as colouring
additives, water repellents to extend the performance of
Tanalith® copper based wood preservatives.
Tanatone® In-treatment colour additive that provides
a durable penetrating coloration for the
treated wood.
WR Additive Water repellent additive to improve water
repellency and dimensional stability of
the treated wood.
Tanaguard® Anti-mould additive to minimise mould
development on the surface of the treated
timber.
BARamine® Penetration enhancement for treatment
of heartwood and refractory timber
species.
Not all additives may be available, compatible or suitable for
certain treatment applications. Consult Lonza for further
details.
International Acceptance:
Tanalith® copper based preservatives conform to the latest
Unites States EPA, European Union and Australian regulatory
directives regarding preservatives for use in wood products
for residential and close human contact use such as decking,
outdoor furniture, playground equipment and similar.
Tanalith® and other brand copper based preservatives from
Lonza are in wide use around the world including in many
countries in Europe, the United States, Asia and more specifi-
cally, New Zealand, Australia and Fiji in the Pacific region.
