One of our donors recently stopped me midway through my pitch. “The answer is yes,” he said.
I plead guilty: I have a tendency to take the scenic route on my way to making a point. In my defense: As a former writer, sometimes I got paid by the word.
But the frequency with which our donors offer their support before I’ve even asked suggests that, for them, giving to VASJ is a genuine pleasure. They’d rather talk about their own high school adventure than dwell too long on why they should return the favor for another generation.
It really goes without saying. Each of us – whether we attended VA or St. Joe’s or VASJ – knows that our education was a gift that shaped the course of the rest of our lives. The values and beliefs we bring to our personal relationships and professional careers set us apart.
My classmate, John Shinsky ’69, put it well when he spoke to our students after they raised money in a Lenten Mission Collection for an orphanage he founded in Mexico. “If you are here, you are blessed,” he said.
That really does tell the whole story, doesn’t it? And those of us who were blessed to benefit from the gifts of the Ursulines and Marianists years ago now have the privilege to help contemporary young people receive the same.
It has been a blessing beyond measure for me to return to our shared alma mater after more than four decades away. I am happy to tell you that everything – absolutely everything – that was truly important about our high school experience is mirrored fully in the lives of our students today.
When our alums visit, every bit of what they see – the academics, the athletics, the spirituality, the friendships – conjures a sense of déjà vu. In fact, I’m often amazed that our students apparently believe I am a grownup.
They have no idea that, in what seems just a bell ring ago, I was headed to geometry class.
What our students do understand, however, is just how blessed they are. Perhaps because of modern challenges that cause them to have a more authentic world view than we did, they already realize that attending Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School is an opportunity not to be squandered or taken lightly.
For all the fun they have – and they have plenty – they take their education very seriously. That explains why 100 percent of the class of 2012 headed off to college this past school year.
In this special issue of VASJ Magazine, we celebrate the successes of our students and we thank you for making those successes possible. Your generosity continues the dream of a VASJ education and ensures that our school will remain on the same clear path that our teachers and coaches charted for us.
The story of VASJ has been one of excellence, mission and pride since the earliest visions of our founders. Our most recent growth – the current freshman class enrollment is more than 120 percent greater than it was just two years ago – is the result of many factors, not the least of which has been your enthusiasm and help.
Getting right to the point: Thank you. And God bless you for all you have done and continue to do for your alma mater.

A family was created in the class of 2012 and this family will live on for a lifetime. It’s actually quite funny that we are such a close family and that we represent ourselves as the ‘Vikings,’ because if you spell out Vikings, you see family right in the middle with the word kin. We are forever Vikings; we are forever kin. Never forget that, because I won’t.

the 21st century represents a series of limitless choices. Secondary education is no exception. Students and their parents now face an array of choices unimagined in the
not-so-distant past. It is hard to keep count of the high schools that have opened or closed in Northeast Ohio since most of us earned our diplomas.
Meanwhile, the state has made it easier for students to go to public schools outside of their immediate neighborhoods.
Charter and magnet schools offer specialized curricula. Home schooling is on the rise. Yet despite all these options, American education continues to struggle to keep up with the demands of the world.
Why, then, has VASJ had so much success, including 100 percent of its class of 2012 going on to colleges from West Point to Denison to Ursuline to the University of Dayton? What makes our school stand out among its peers? Why, at the same time other schools are facing declining enrollment, are more and more families making the sacrifice to send their sons and daughters to East 185th Street and Lakeshore Boulevard?
Just what is it that our increasingly generous donors are supporting?
By Mike Tobin ’91
The success of our graduates tells the world that a Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School diploma carries a stamp of academic excellence. But the lessons of life our students learn and our donors support go far beyond the classroom. That’s the VASJ difference.

We asked some of the people who would know best – education and religious leaders who deal day-to-day with the challenges VASJ confronts in a culture that seems to change with the speed of a click on your cable remote. They explain why VASJ is uniquely positioned to transform young men and women into the leaders of tomorrow, capable of competing globally and enriching the community in which we live.
“We have a motto here: Faith. Family. Future,” said Richard Osborne, the school’s President and a graduate of St. Joseph High School, class of 1969. “It’s not an idle slogan. It is a heartfelt expression of our beliefs, our mission and our commitment to our students.”
It is a proposition rooted in the traditions of the Ursuline and Marianist religious orders that sponsor the school. Sister Susan Durkin, OSU, President of the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland, put it this way:
“While there are many fine high schools in the area which offer quality education, VASJ stands alone as a community unified in educational excellence, spiritual growth and attention to the gifts and potential of every student,” she said. “They are a community which is spiritually motivated and welcoming to all who venture through their doors.”
Many of those we talked to pointed out that VASJ is, first and foremost, a school dedicated to educating its students. Advanced Placement, honors and college-prep courses equip students with the tools they need to succeed. VASJ also has developed a curriculum focused on entrepreneurship and has introduced a program called “Our World Today” that is designed to broaden students’ horizons to the issues and peoples around the world.
In addition, the school has specialized programs that can offer real-world skills or simply a change of pace from Macbeth. An industrial arts program teaches skills such as automotive repair and woodworking. Culinary arts allows students to cook in a restaurant-style kitchen. A relatively new program works with autistic students.
Moreover, visits from local, state, national and even international dignitaries afford students the opportunity to engage with leaders and role models they might otherwise never meet. This school year alone has featured visits from the Bishop of Cleveland, the Ambassador from the Republic of Slovenia and the Mayor of
Cleveland, as well as a former Mayor, U.S. Senator and Ohio Governor.
And, oh yes, two Ohio Supreme Court Justices along with a dozen other judges were on hand in the school gym for the investiture of a newly elected Judge of the Ohio Court of Appeals – the school’s own graduate, Tim McCormack from the class of 1962, who told students how his experience at the school set him on his own path to success.
“VASJ is one of America’s most important schools,” McCormack said. “That is not an overstatement. You come from very diverse religious backgrounds. But this place – you – are a living expression of Christ’s teaching. You do not all look the same – each of you is a complex young person – but together you are a beautiful combination, dedicated to each other.”
Clearly, VASJ is not simply another prep school. It is the only school anywhere sponsored by both the Ursulines and Marianists. That means more than just starting the day with a quick Hail Mary or Our Father. It means faith lived out in
actions and service to others.Margaret Lyons, Secretary of Education and Superintendent
of Schools for the Diocese of Cleveland, said the Ursuline and Marianist influence is critical to the VASJ difference. As the last principal of Villa Angela Academy and the first principal of VASJ,
she understands the Ursuline and Marianist influence perhaps better than anyone.
“Both (religious orders) express direction for human and compassionate discipline as a reflection of God’s love,” she said. “Both express flexibility and adaptability to serve new communities
I think what allows the students here to make it work is that they truly respect each other.
During a special ceremony at VASJ, Ohio Supreme Court Justice Terrence O’Donnell swears in Timothy McCormack ’62 as a judge in the Ohio Eighth District Court of Appeals as McCormack’s wife, Valerie, looks on.

and increasingly diverse communities.” David Csank, today’s VASJ Principal, said the spiritual
underpinnings of the school are manifest daily through activities such as the opening liturgy to start the school year, weekly Masses on campus, the rosary prayer service in October or any of the nearly two dozen Catholic services that take place every school
year. Students volunteer at missions halfway around the world in El Salvador or a few steps out the back door at
the Hospice of the Western Reserve. And they live out their faith in acts big and small.
“I think what allows the students here to make it work is that they truly respect each other,” Csank said. “They believe that every person in this building is a child of God, deserving of love and respect.”
That love and respect is another hallmark that dates to the feelings of family and togetherness that instilled such loyalty among graduates of Villa Angela Academy, St. Joseph High School and Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School.
“This school has a feeling of family,” said Don Dailey, a 1970 graduate and retired managing partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Cleveland, who now serves as Chairman of the school’s Board of Advisors. “Students know each other and the faculty members know you, your first name, in the first week.”
Dailey and others cite the school’s diversity as another strength that sets it apart from other schools. The diversity is evident in all its many forms – racial, geographic, socioeconomic, to name a few.
“It’s a real-world setting,” Dailey said. “There’s a richness of diverse viewpoints and experiences.”
Religion teacher Bill Raddell regularly visits other schools to learn how they educate their students. He used the analogy of a face when comparing VASJ to other schools. All faces have common elements – eyes, nose, mouth, ears – but it’s the individual elements and differences that give each face its character.
Every year he asks the seniors in his class about what defines VASJ and the Ursuline and Marianist education they’ve received. “Almost universally they say family spirit is the outstanding characteristic,” Raddell said. “They say: ‘It feels like home to me.’”
Raddell is a 1968 graduate of St. Joseph and has taught at the school for the better part of 40 years. He notes that class sizes are smaller than when he was a student and the school has adapted to the changes that come with the times, but the spirit of the school – the togetherness, the academic excellence, the Catholic foundation – flourishes now as it always has.
“The spirit of those previous eras is still here and the kids are walking around here with it,” he said. “There are things happening here that you’re not going to find anywhere else.”
Mike Tobin ’91 is vice chairman of the VASJ Board of Advisors. A former journalist, he now serves as Community and Public Affairs Specialist for the U.S. Department of Justice, Northern District of Ohio.
The spirit of those previous eras is still here and the kids are walking around here with it.

Don't miss this opportunity to reconnect with your classmates!
The Viking Fund is the fundraising arm of Villa Angela–St. Joseph High School Athletics. The cost of running an athletics program is constantly increasing. The Viking Fund provides a way for our alumni and friends to support our mission of recruiting, educating and graduating talented student-athletes.
In making a contribution to the Viking Fund you are supporting everyday costs associated with team operating budgets such as travel, meals, and uniforms. More than 200 student-athletes benefit from your investment each year. Our student-athletes need your support to help them prepare
and perform at the highest level. Donate today using the enclosed envelope or online at vasj.com. Help our student-athletes receive a quality VASJ Catholic education while continuing the Viking tradition of athletic and academic excellence.
