New KESAB Initiatives
We are very grateful that Grace Barila, KESAB Business Development Manager, and Richard Olesinki, Consultant, met with Nicole Mertens, MDC Marine Biologist-in-Residence and Tim recently. A Marine Debris Day, 5 KESAB presentations for our visiting schools and promotion for both organisations are the expected outcomes. Very exciting!!
Richard, Nicole and Grace discussing ideas and opportunities
Nicole made up a new display using the latest posters from KESAB

Volunteer Workshop We had our first Workshop for the year, for our regular and new Volunteers. Carl Charter from EMS (Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries) gave a presentation about Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries. Carl had many beautiful photos of local marine creatures to share.
His photos of Leafy Seadragons were particularly inspiring.

Federal Minister for Education visits the MDC
The MDC was very honoured to have Senator Simon Birmingham and Local Member Matt Williams MP visit recently. Simon, who brought along his youngest daughter, was very impressed with the centre and was very sympathetic regarding the funding issues. The self-funded MDC has visitors from all areas of South Australia, even a recent school from Victoria, and from all State, Independent and Catholic sectors. Sadly, the MDC is the only centre left in Adelaide that primary school children can visit for a hands-on science experience. Simon was very impressed with the quality of the work including the interactive models, coastal signs, website initiatives, the Marine Biologists and Marine Trainee projects.

Marine Debris Project
We are thrilled that our talented Marine Biologist in Residence, Nicole Mertens PhD, will be supporting Kristian Peters’ very comprehensive Marine Debris Surveys from around South Australia. Nicole will be inserting data to provide yearly figures for 30 different places around SA. It is amazing how much data is already on the site: http://marinedebris.amlr.waterdata.com.au/Default.aspx - please check it out and we’re sure it will expand very quickly with Nicole’s work ethic.
Kristian provided Nicole with a Training session to get things moving
We have been able to employ Nicole on a part-time basis and we hope to be able to expand her role through this project and others. We also have other wonderful Marine Biologists who have generously donated their time to the MDC. These young people deserve to be supported. If you have a project that needs a talented Marine Biologist, please let us know.
Karno provides Training Sessions for our Volunteers
We are very grateful for the mentoring by Karl Telfer as this has enabled Karno to develop a variety of skills. Karl and Karno continue to update the Aboriginal Learning Displays within our centre.
Karno is highlighting one of the Aboriginal artefacts
We are hoping to extend Karno’s employment at the MDC. Our visitors have been getting an amazing insight into Aboriginal knowledge and culture through the advice and expertise of Karl and Karno’s presentation skills.
Philanthropy Australia Event We were thrilled to be invited by JBWere Adviser Thomas Huxtable to attend a special event highlighting the importance of partnering other like-minded groups for future projects and practical tips for engaging the philanthropic sector.
Presenters included Paul Madden from the Wyatt Trust and Geoff Barber from the Julia Farr Association. Our local Philanthropic Australia State Manager Julia Steele Stott was also involved in the event. We were able to invite Nature Foundation SA (NFSA) along as well including NFSA’s new CEO, Hugo Hopton and Patrick Mentzel, Fundraising and Marketing Manager.
Geoff, Julia and Paul provided a Q&A session
Placemaking Project Congratulations to our friends at Western Adelaide Coastal Residents Association (WACRA) who, with the support of the City of Charles Sturt, have decorated 23 stobie poles. Jim Douglas, President, and his team proudly showed the great community project at their recent Launch. One of our Year 7 students, Skye Van Den Nieuwelaar, and her Mum, Kenzie, partook in the project.

Wonggayerlo Performances are a hit! We are thrilled with the very powerful performances provided by Karl Telfer and Michael Mills. The feedback from Teachers and students has been very good. Our talented performers are doing primary school presentations every Tuesday and we have bookings well into Term 2. Please let Primary Schools know that we can provide these performances.

Science Week Launch The State Minister for Education, Dr Susan Close, spoke eloquently and with passion about the importance of science and interactive learning as she launched Science Week on the evening of Tuesday 5th April. The event was held at the RiAus Buidling, Adelaide. Our Lord Michael Mills, alias Professor Flint, discussed his Science Week activities with Dr Close. Michael achieved national funding for his “Brief History of Life, the Universe and Everything” performances. For details please contact: [email protected] In our discussions, Dr Close also spoke very fondly of the MDC and the role it plays within South Australia for science and interactive learning.

Caring for our Coast
We are all responsible for the environment in which we live. The coast and marine environments provide a significant habitat, nursery and feeding grounds for aquatic and native life. Most coastal pollution originates on land. Rubbish thrown onto streets, plant clippings left behind or oil on the road is washed into storm water drains and eventually into the sea. Some rubbish can take a very long time to break down.
So what can we do? Use the bins, they are there for rubbish to be disposed or recycled. Don’t let it
be washed down the gutter into a drain.
Fix up oil leaks on your car.
Respect the beach. Take nothing but memories, leave nothing but your
footprints.
On the beach use walking tracks. These protect dune plants and help stop
beach erosion. Dune plants stop the sand from blowing away.
Scoop the poop. Make sure you pick up your dog droppings. Carry a plastic
bag and use it as a pooper-scooper, then put it in the nearest bin.
Do not clean the driveway with water. All that water washes to the beach,
taking with it chemicals, plant clippings, dirt and oil. Sweep it with a broom
instead, and put the leaves in the compost bin.
This is only a small part of what we can do.
