CONSULAR CLUB
OF NEW YORK
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
The Committee wishes you all a Happy New Year 2018!
Dear Friends, dear Ladies,
I hope you all enjoyed the Holiday Season with your loved ones and the surprising weather in
those first weeks of January.
We had a lovely Potluck event in December and the committee hopes everybody enjoyed it as
much as we did. It was great to spend quality time together. We also had the chance to meet
some potential new members.
We are part of a club that connects New Yorkers and members of the Consular community,
whatever our origin. Our Consular Club offers us the chance to share our experiences and joys.
To me, the most important thing in life is to share and that is exactly what this club stands for.
This is reflected in the program you are going to discover in this newsletter.
The program for the next 4 months is full of different activities, ranging from exhibitions over
walking tours to artistic workshops.
Thanks to your participation, we are a lively and very special club. Your commitment makes us
even more eager to propose to you attractive events no other club can offer.
Hope to see you all soon at our upcoming events.
Thank you so much for your friendship and continued commitment to our common cause!
Stay warm
Brigitte

Bowne Print Shop: 500 Years of Printing Workshop
Carrying on the age-old tradition of job printing (small batch printing), South Street Seaport
Museum is home to Bowne & Co. Stationers, New York’s oldest operating business under the
same name. Bowne & Co. was established by Robert Bowne in 1775, and grew as a financial
printer throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1975, Bowne & Co. Inc. partnered with
South Street Seaport Museum to open a charming, 19th-century-style print shop at 211 Water
Street in the historic Seaport district. The 19th-century letter presses are still on-site.
Once used for documenting marine trade, they are now used for hand-printed, contemporary
artisinal projects and visitors can buy cards that are still made in the shop today, by master
printer Robert Warner.
Using objects and equipment from the Museum’s collection, Bowne Printers will give us an
enchanting peek into the history of the letterpress during our one hour workshop and take us
through the history of printing from Gutenberg to the New York Times. They will demonstrate
several presses and discuss the history of typography and printing, with an emphasis on the
local New York context. Each participant will get a printed keepsake and a chance to pull a
print on their presses. Step into another era with Bowne & Co.

Explore the Wilds of Central Park!
Central Park is the centerpiece of New York living -- but how much do you really know about
our beloved park? James Nevius, our fabulous guide, provides a fascinating insight about our
much-loved park. When famed NYC newspaper editor Horace Greeley was first taken to
Central Park, he remarked to his guide that he was glad that the park's architects, Olmsted
and Vaux, had "let it alone a good more than I thought they would."
What Greeley was undoubtedly referring to was the wild, northern section of the park. Still to
this day, many people think it is primeval New York, a small section of wilderness that escaped
the park designers' drawing board. They could not be more wrong! The fascinating northern
section of the park is just as sculpted as the Great Lawn or Bethesda Terrace -- it is simply
built to look completely natural. On this tour, we will examine the various parts of the park
north of 96th Street where many people seldom venture. Included in our itinerary will be the
block house (fort) from the War of 1812, Harlem Meer, the memorial of the "Father of
Greater NYC", the loch, the Conservatory, the North Woods and much more!
NOTE: While not exactly strenuous, this 2-hour walk starts with about 30 stairs and
involves a certain amount of uphill climbing and uneven terrain, so please wear
comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing in case of rain.

Photowalk in the High Line with a new approach to Street Photography
High Line and Chelsea area is one of my favorite places to hang out in NYC. This unusual
public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s
West Side runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th
Street, between 10th and 12th Avenues. It is filled with plants, art work and people flock
to it as soon as the weather gets better.
I invite you to a photowalk along this beautiful park and try Street Photography this time.
Street photography can be intimidating if you are not used to. One of the common
reservation people have is the feeling of invading their subject’s privacy. But there are
many ways to include human element in your photography and those methods can be
rewarding to make a very artistic images.
Are you curious? So bring your phone, your camera and let’s make some beautiful shots!

Payment Policy for Tours and Events
PAYMENT
For events for $20 or more
Once you have made your reservation, please send a check, made payable to Consular
Women’s Club, to our Treasurer Mina Popat. This will secure your place, subject to availability.
For events under $20
Please bring cash with you to the event – no checks please.
LUNCH
We all love food and often combine lunch with an event. Our organizers scout around
the area and choose a reasonably priced cafe. Often we are a large group and have found
that payment by splitting the bill is the best means. To allay any concern about cost we would
like to assure our members that a light entree and soda/coffee is the usual cuisine.
BOOKING
Please reserve or cancel your place only with the contact person listed for the particular
event.
All events are reserved on a first call basis. Please confirm your attendance at least one week
before the activity or event. Guests are placed on a waiting list and will be included on a first
come, first served basis, subject to availability.
CANCELLATION
Persistent no shows - The club finds it very disappointing and embarrassing because other
members are denied the chance to come.
Please inform the contact person for the event at least two days in advance. If you are unable
to do so and we cannot fill your space with someone on the waiting list, the fee will still apply.
No Show
If you do not attend an event and have not notified the contact person, the fee will still apply.
Our events are so successful and we often have a long waiting list so please remember to
contact us in plenty of time if you cannot attend so that we can attempt to fill your space.
(Many events are paid for in advance and regardless of how many attend; the fee to the club
is the same)
GUEST
For all events, unless otherwise stated, guests are welcome at the invitation of a member
(additional fee of $5 for guests). Nominated guests will be placed on a waiting list and be
offered places on a first come-first served basis, subject to availability.
We shall endeavour, wherever possible, to open the guest list 5-7 days before the event.
When booking an event by telephone, please leave your name and telephone number –
please spell your name and give your telephone number slowly.
