In September 1994 the Trail de l’Absinthe came to life. At the time, we
were considered crazy for setting out with the ambition of creating a
race of this magnitude. Twenty-four years later under its new guise
Swiss Canyon Trail, the event is still going strong despite all of the
numerous evolutions in the sport.
The Swiss Canyon Trail organisers have always put the desires and well-
being of its participants first, from listening to feedback to providing
all of the essential facilities for your well-being. We are proud of our
reputation for first-class organisation, excellent race management and
course facilities.
In 2018, we also commenced our partnership with La Diagonale des
Fous. More information can be found in this guide. La Diagonale is a
magnificent, legendary race with much in common with our own. The
partnership has also introduced many benefits for athletes taking part
in both races.
We wish all of the runners a wonderful event and hope you take the
maximum pleasure competing in this majestic, natural and distinct
environment. Be ready to meet the green fairy at any twist or turn. She
may even be able to help during the most difficult moments !

The region is nestled in the valley of the Swiss Jura mountains and lies 30 minutes from Neuchatel ; 1 hour, 15 minutes from Geneva ; two hours from Zurich. Its most populous town is the watchmaking centre Fleurier. The Val-de-Travers is world-renowned as the cradle of absinthe.

THE VAL-DE-TRAVERS
LE VAL-DE-TRAVERSThe Val-de-Travers was created on January 1, 2009,
following the merger of nine former municipalities:
Boveresse, Buttes, Couvet, Fleurier, Les Bayards, Môtiers,
Noiraigue, Saint-Sulpice and Travers. The merger was
approved by popular vote on February 24, 2008. The
town hall is in the village of Fleurier. In addition, the former
municipality of Môtiers gave the name to the village square
(place of February 24) in memory of this historic day.
GÉOGRAPHIEAccording to the Swiss Federal Statistical Office, Val-de-
Travers is 124.91 km2. 6.0% of this area corresponds to
areas of housing or infrastructure, 42.4% to agricultural
areas, 50.7% to wooded areas and 0.8% to unproductive
areas. Val-de-Travers borders the Neuchâtel municipalities
of Verrieres, La Cote-aux-Fees, La Brévine, Ponts-de-
Martel, Brot-Plamboz, Brot-Dessous, Boudry and Gorgier.
It is also bordered by the Vaud municipalities of Provence,
Romairon, Mauborget, Fontaines-sur-Grandson and
Sainte-Croix as well as the French communes of the
Allies (25) and Hauterive-la-Fresse (25). Val-de-Travers is
located in the Swiss part of the Jura mountains; there are
typical formations of the Jura mountains, such as Crêt du
Cervelet.

THE TOWN OF SAINTE-CROIXResting on a sunny terrace in the heart of the vast expanse of Jura Vaud, the Commune of St. Croix is famous throughout the world for its music boxes and automatons.
Today, Sainte-Croix is active in many areas such
as industry, high-end watchmaking, connectivity,
crafts, training and tourism. Thanks to the presence
of the Technopôle, which is a reference center of
competence for the Canton of Vaud, Sainte-Croix
has a great potential for innovation, certification
and research in cutting-edge fields, such as additive
techniques.
Endowed with the best infrastructures, the town
of Sainte-Croix is delighted to have an intense
associative, cultural and sporting life to which the
population of Sainte-Croix respond with pride
and enthusiasm. Health and well-being are empty
words for St. Croix, which enjoys a quality of life
second to none, with the advantages of a city close
to nature ...

Those travelling by car may also consider staying in either Neuchatel

of accommodation options and diverse activities.
In early June, the Neuchatel lake, renowned for many free-access
public beaches, is usually at an ideal temperature for swimming,
water sports and relaxing those muscles after the endeavours of
the Swiss Canyon Trail. Equally appealing post race may be a visit
to thermal baths at Yverdon-les-Bains. You can also take time to
explore the watchmaking region of Neuchatel, or sample chocolate
and absinthe at the many fabricants of the region, and for those
who haven’t exerted themselves enough, the Jura region offers a
multitude of hiking trails and excellent options for mountain and
road biking.
There are numerous accommodation options for athletes. Those
wishing to stay near the race village, are encouraged to stay in the Val-
de-Travers. Accommodation is available to runners at the Centre sportif
du Val-de-Travers where rooms are available at a reduced rate ; likewise
accommodation is available in civil protection shelters.

The ever-changing switch from ascending to descending legs ensures challenges are constant, the rewards fulfilling.

In 2018 the Swiss Canyon Trail launched its first ultra-distance race. Officially 112 kilometres of exacting and technical trail running. The elevation change is relentless, the visual rewards endless. Nearly 5,500m of vertical ascension. This race is not simply about climbing a peak one side and descending another. Nor a race defined by one view, one point to conquer. The highlights are frequent and often very personal.
