R E c E N t ly w E R E c E I v E D t h I S N o t E :
I just received my free trees and I had no idea
how much fun my kids and I would have
planting them. My girls are 7 and 4, and they
had a blast. I wanted to say thank you for the
wonderful memory and the excitement you have
given my girls. This morning they both had to
check the front and back yard and see if the trees
were “still skinny” or not!
Like a toy, the newness will wear off, but my girls
and I had a great time playing in the dirt and
planting the trees. Thanks again!

Most girdling roots are not visible from the surface. This tree was buried in the ground up to the white mark on the trunk. This
tree would grow very slowly and probably fall if it grew to
maturity.
Surface girdling roots inhibit growth near the base of trees and
can cause failure. These roots could have been easily removed
when the tree was young.
Ninety percent of important, fragile tree roots essential
for absorbing nutrients are found in the top foot of soil. The majority of these roots are under the canopy of the
spreading branches. They can easily be damaged by
trenching and compaction. Supporting roots will grow
down to help anchor the tree, but in most trees, the tap root
is absorbed.
