When at home, how can we easily manage our visibility and

our availability from others, within our various

relationship circles? Who can know we're at home, who

can reach us there, and how? How can I be notified

when other houshehold members are in or out of home?

How can I also control the other flows that intend to

enter our home: deliveries, services, physical mails, data

produced and received by our myriad electronic

devices…?

Social Scales are smart physical boxes, where you can put any

kind of object in order to communicate your availability

to your different relationship circles, and to manage all

kinds of flows. Their purpose is to make it easier to

define presence settings. When you want to say you're

available for someone, you put an object representing

him/her in a box. Each object stands for one person, one

organization, or one relationship circle. You want to use

a doll to represent your niece? Just teach the box what

the doll means. You can imagine other kinds of actions

related to presence: the range of possibilities is huge,

and all actions are very intuitive. To order milk from your

grocery store, just place a milk bottle into the right box…

Social Scales are a great tool to manage your presence and

more generally incoming and outgoing flows. You are the

one who manage your relationships and your visibility.

How does it work ?Social Scales are smart boxes, connected to the internet, at home. These boxes have access to your profiles on social networks, on skype, or to your mobile phone.

Boxes include scales and small cameras, so that they can recognize an identify objects people put in them after they have been taught to do it. Social boxes are able to « link » one object to one person, or to a circle of people.When an object is placed in the box or removed from it, Social Scales updates your status and your availability and lets the person(s) represented by the object know. Boxes can be purchased and programmed by their users, or provided by vendors. Stores can provide boxes where consumers place objects that represent the products they wish to order. The Post office can build a smart PostBox that knows whether outgoing mail or parcels are expecting the postman…APIs are available to imagine other kinds of uses and services, to better manage physical and dematerialized flows.

Design principles- Each box is related to one set of presence/visibility/availability/communications settings or actions in a specific place. It needs only to be programmed once (or comes pre-programmed)-Each object is related to one specific person, organization or circle-The box/object matching must be extremely simple- The system needs to be secure and to take privacy very seriously

Business ModelBoxes can be purchased standalone, as decoration, fun or functional objects.They can be sold as "peripherals" to services such as social networks, Skype, etc., or to high-end smartphones.They can be offered by merchants or service providers as activators for their services (home shopping, post delivery…)

For Google, Social Scales can offer another possibility to know more about user habits, in order to offer more customized services

« I have made three boxes, since I have decided to use Social scales. I called them On / Call / Want. For instance when I'm back home, after work. I'm not available anymore for my work relationships, so I remove the small characters representing my coworkers from the « On » box. I become available for my mum and my family, so I put my mum's object (a lipstick) in the « On » box. If I want to call them, I put these objects in the « Call » box. I can still use my keypad, but it's very useful for my 2 years old daughter, who can't count yet! »

« Another useful use of the boxes is when something's lacking in my fridge. For instance, I can put an empty milk bottle in the « Want » box, and it tells both the grocery store and my neighbours that I need milk. Thus, I can order it that way, or one of my neighbours can be nice and give me one. Some of my neighours also use a « share » box ; they can put down stuff they are ready to share with the other neighbours, like roller tape. »

« There are lots of possibilities ; last week, I put both my grandma's and La Poste's objects in the « On » box ; as she's quite lonely, the postman went to say hello to her, while delivering her mails ! »

Additionnal ideasProximity of objects is meaningfulWhen two objects are close, they can get new meanings ; what's important is the tangibility of communications. When we put a teddybear next to a lipstick, it could mean that a child wants to call his mum.

The importance of symbolic representations When I put down my keys (which are a transitional object) somewhere, it means I'm home, so I'm not available for my work relationships anymore, but for my family it's ok ; we can imagine they are automatically notified when I drop my keys. Symbolic representation is an important idea when it's about dealing with dematerialized flows.

Theme rooms- Different availability and visibility settings for every room.- For instance in the bathroom, I'm invisible for everybody except my family, whereas in the living room, I'm can receive my work calls, my neighbours' calls and so on.

Additionnal ideasAvailability wall Previous actions can mean something new for our close relationships : it's not « I'm here » which is important, but « How I am here ». Our respective presences can be like a family barometer : when two members of the household are stuck in the trafic jams, and then turn off their phone after work, it means this is a bad time to call the family...It can contributes to draw/build a time mapping of activities, which is a new way to deal with presence.

Geo-based sharing Thanks to sensors (sensor stickers), we can get a set of data, useful to build a mapping of my activity. My relationships can be notified I'm home because there is a sensor on the door, that I'm not available anymore when I'm in the shower thanks to another sensor, etc.

Learning Home : teaching the home our habits1 sensor + patterns = 1 action The first time we do something, the home observes ; the second time, it starts to learn, it keeps learning the third time, the fourth time, I don't do anything, the home offers to do it for me. This learning home can be used for presence issues.

How does it work?

Connections with the expedition

The bread machine comes with a public API which can be programmed by both users and manufacturers. It has several plugged sensors, which connected to a smartphone make it possible to follow the bread's cooking from a distance. The machine is connected to its manufacturer for uploading premium recipes. Additionnaly, baker community websites let bread machine users download recipes, some for free, some for a fee.

This project follows Innovation Path #1 of « Connected Homes for Connected People »: "The Programmable, Domesticated Home".

It emphasizes the programmability of home appliances and equipments, user control, as well as the construction of user communities.

Making very good or fancy bread with a bread machine is not so easy. There are various kinds of flour, leaven, salt… Unfortunately, most of the machines sold on the market are not “really” programmable. Only a few settings can be chosen by the end user. Additionally, the recipes provided with the machine are usually pretty basic. On the Internet, there are hundred of collaborative web sites dedicated to bread machines and how to make numerous kind of breads, buns or cakes. Users ask questions, share recipes and tips according to their type of machines, and ingredients. Some have developed such a level of experience that they can be considered bread machine process “proAms”. The goal of the project is to let allow bread machine owners to easily use the collective intelligence of the community through simple script files that can be downloaded into a new kind of programmable bread machine. The machine is able to easily download configuration files based on ingredients, the type of wheat, expected results …

Use case Scenario

Before leaving for work, Claire scans her flour packaging with her smartphone and get access to a list of recipes proposed by the bread-making community. She chooses one of them, mixes the different ingredients, places the dough in the bread machine and activates the distance control system.At 5pm, from her desk office, she uploads the special programme according to the recipe she has chosen, and sends it to her bread machine. The machine reads the script, adjusts the cooking time and begins the preparation. Claire can see her bread baking from her tablet as well as read several other parameters: her machine is equipped with heat, humidity and smell sensors, and a small camera. When she gets back home, the bread is hot and ready to be eaten.

The following week, Pascal wants to cook a bread recipe like a professional. He logs on to the manufacturer website with his machine's serial number in order to get access to the premium recipes, specially written for the brand's machines. It’s a high quality service. Pascal can watch videos or even talk to a professional baker if he wants to improve his results.

Additional Ideas

Digital Maid- Various sensors are spread through the home to capture movements, signals, activities… and send reports to the resident, via her phone. The device “listens” and “observes” the house and its uses.- Scenario: I’m starting a recipe that I read on my tablet. It’s actually projected on TV screen too / the cooking time is adjusted according to my preferences and guests (from calendars, contact, social network...) and from pictures (figures out weight and freshness) / the phone listens to sounds to detect when baking starts or finishes...

Smart OvenThe oven is connected to the manufacturer that provides it with premium functions, in order to facilitate general use and enhance user experience. A community publishes tools, advice and digital scripts to help amateur cooks produce excellent meals.

Additional Ideas

Help StoreHalf domestic store, half technicians network, this store helps residents in their everyday life, offering several applications and both hardware and software widgets . It’s a kind of peer-to-peer service, promoting local interaction, production, distribution, and networking... Various skills, data, contents, scripts, etc. can be exchanged.

Home Automation EcosystemDefine a logical standard for hardware objects to send end receive actions/status in an interoperable way, via TCP/IP, which can be implemented cheaply over various low cost networks (ethernet, wifi, zigbee …)Applets and apps are available for download in a complete ecosystem.Geeks can program the system themselves, while mass consumers just use it. Professional installers can also add value.

Connexion with the Expedition

Tack-Tiles are an incarnation of the "4D Window" Innovation Path that emerged from the CH4CP expedition.

Windows have several meanings and purposes. They give

natural light, they offer us a view outside. At a glimpse, they

convey basic information about the weather, traffic, the time

of day, the kids playing in the courtyard, what our neighbors

are about…

What if new kinds of windows could use the wealth of digital

data to which we have access to convey other kinds of

information and feelings, ones that do not immediately meet

the eye, in a similarly light and unobtrusive way?

Tack-Tiles are small portholes offering a quick peep into other

planes of nearby reality: traffic maps and alerts, cam views

of other places, availability of shared vehicles, weather data,

local events, the location of (willing) friends and relatives, the

family calendar, etc.

Using lightweight display and communication technologies,

we can now imagine wholly new ways of looking through the

window, and new things that can be viewed through the walls

of our home.

How does it work ? Tack-Tiles are small physical widgets ("phydgets") that display information flows in simple text, image or graphic forms.

Physically, they are an ultrathin (ideally flexible and cut-to-shape), low-energy screen, with a renewable energy source, a basic networking device and basic intelligence to run a simple data collection and display program.

One tile typically displays only one type of information. Although one could buy unprogrammed tiles and either write a script or download an app before burning it into its chip, most tiles will probably come pre-programmed. Some will be purchased by consumers, some will be offered by retailers, service providers, or as add-ons to home devices.

Tiles can come in different shapes and sizes. They can be stuck on walls and doors, laid or stood up on tables, hung on coat-pegs, etc. A typical home could have 5 to 10 tiles displaying different content in different places.

Tack-tiles are linked to the local network. They are always on, publicly visible, but not intrusive.

Use case Scenario

When the moved in to their new flat, Pascal, Claire and theirs 3 kids found 3 Tack-Tiles: One that displayed car traffic, one for the weather and one (which they quickly dumped) showing the location of members of the family.

They were also given a tile with their travelcard, showing the time of arrival of the buses at the nearest stations. The grocery store also has one for its special offers, but that one didn't make it to a house wall.

Pascal and Claire positioned a few tiles next to the flat's door. When they’re about to go out, they have a look at the weather forecast, traffic conditions, air quality, their main medical or administrative appointments. The "local news" is conveniently located in the loo, while "social" maps of the area displaying the location of friends and relatives, or local events, are accessible near the TV.

Emma, the youngest daughter, caught up to Tack-Tiles. She purchased an assortment of fancy-looking, programmable tiles to which she attached premade or original programs: Post-It and Calendar tiles for the fridge door, or Celebrity alerts for her best friend's birthday.

Additional Ideas

« Telescope / Timescope machine »

This telescope transforms your phone into a window to remote places: now, in the past, or in the future. The user can choose the view (2D / 3D), what she sees, and the time period (now, future, past). She can then "travel" to the selected place/time, looking at it from above (maps, 3D views), from street level, and displaying additional data on top of the place's view. The phone becomes a mix between a window, a telescope, a time-machine and a teleporter. It can help us navigate, prepare for a meeting, plan for an evening by selecting the right places to go, check on an event, etc.

This new kind of window/wallpaper offers artistic renderings to convey different kinds of feelings. Combined with ambient lighting, it could take different shapes or patterns.

Additional data, information content and interaction displayed on actual glass windows, using projection or innovative material such as presented by Corning or Samsung. Any glass surface can, when the resident chooses it, turn into a computer screen. The data may or may not be related to what can actually be seen through the glass. By looking at the sky, one could get the weather, at the street, traffic and public transportation data, at the store, special offers…

A fuzzy display (screensaver, projection on rough surfaces or water…) provides a feeling about what happens outside: busy/calm, hot/cold, slow/fast, happy/angry, silent/noisy, dense/scattered. You choose indicators (resolution, diameter) and sources, and the display does the rest…
