Topic: The importance of washing hands.
Identification of Focus for Community Teaching
Scientific studies have shown that handwashing can play a huge role in the prevention of
infections in a community. According to the CDC, Handwashing education can help to reduce
COMMUNITY TEACHING 3
the number of children who will get sick in schools, which will play a huge role in preventing
school absenteeism. Apart from getting a yearly flu vaccine to protect oneself, the CDC also
recommends that daily preventative actions such as frequent handwashing with soap and water
(CDC, 2019). In Oak Lawn, Cook County in Illinois, the Flu season always causes huge numbers
of school absenteeism. There is, therefore, a need to teach school going children in this region
how they can better prevent themselves from the Flu virus and other viruses through frequent
handwashing, which can help lower the infection rates in these institutions. This community
teaching plan is therefore assigned for children between 6- 11 attending an elementary school in
Oak Lawn, Cook County in Illinois.
Epidemiological Rationale for Topic
According to Moncion, Young, Tunis, Rempel, Stirling, Zhao (2019), handwashing using
running water and soap or antiseptics will reduce the cases of diarrhea by nearly 50%. This is
because handwashing will help in killing and washing away of disease-causing microorganisms
and ensure the prevention of the spread of infections from an individual to another. Handwashing
has also been shown to reduce the risk of contracting different respiratory-related illnesses such
as asthma attacks, pneumonia, and Flu by nearly 16 %. This specifically important as the CDC
has estimated that influenza results to 9 million to 45 million illnesses every year and at least
140,000- 810000 hospitalizations (Wong, Cowling, & Aiello, 2014). The use of hand sanitizers
to supplement handwashing has also been known to be an effective method of preventing the
passing of diseases causing germs from one individual to another.
COMMUNITY TEACHING 4
Teaching Plan Criteria
Nursing Diagnosis
For infectious diseases such as influenza and other diseases that can easily be passed from
one person to another, the risk for infections increases among children and among elderly people
who have weakened immune systems (Ejemot-Nwadiaro, Ehiri, Arikpo, Meremikwu, &
Critchley, 2015). Most people who are infected with Flu and cases of diarrhea in Oak Lawn,
Cook County, Illinois are, therefore, 4- 10 years old, and elderly people above 8- years show
have weaker immune systems.
Readiness for Learning
To determine if the target audience, which included children who were between six to
eleven years, was ready to learn questions, would be posed to the kids. These questions would
include the discussion of what the children know about disease-causing germs and the ways of
preventing themselves from disease-causing germs. Through answering the questions related to
disease-causing microorganisms, the learners would, therefore, verbalize their understanding of
the topic and the importance of handwashing and appear ready to engage in conversations around
handwashing while being attentive to the learning session which would indicate their readiness
to learn.
COMMUNITY TEACHING 5
Learning Theory to Be Utilized
The community teaching projects would be founded on the experiential learning theory.
The utilization of this theory would, therefore, be based on the experiences of the learners with
the topic of interest, such as hand washing. The experiential learning theory is, therefore, be
based
on the role that experience plays in learning (Hoque, 2017). As a teacher, I will, therefore,
encourage the children to share different experiences related to handwashing and exhibit the
right method of washing hands, which can help reduce the transmission of germs such as
influenza of diarrhea-causing germs.
Goal: Healthy People 2020 (HP2020) objective(s)
The promotion of respiratory health through prevention, early detection, and better treatment.
The teaching project will be based on this HP2020 objective as this objective highlights the
main goal of preventing respiratory infection such as influenza. The HP2020 objective thus
supports hand washing as it will help reduce infection rates, which arise from poor hand hygiene.
COMMUNITY TEACHING 6
How Does This HP2020 Objective Relate to Alma Ata’s Health for All Global Initiatives
The ‘Alma Ata's Health for All Global Initiatives' aims at reducing health disparities
across the world. The HP2020 objective relates to Alma Ata’s Health for All Global Initiatives
because by educating children on the importance of handwashing in reducing the transmission of
diseases as this will help reduce the cases of influenza and diarrhea especially among local
communities such as in Oak Lawn, Cook County in Illinois and therefore help reduce health
disparities.
Develop Behavioral Objectives (Including Domains), Content, and Strategies/Methods:

Content
Strategies/Methods
1. The children will
identify the occasions
during which it’s necessary
to clean hands.
(Cognitive Domain)
(Hoque, 2017).
1. The occasion which
during which its necessary
to wash hands include, after
visiting the toilet, before
and after taking meals, after
blowing one nose and after
contact with people with
Flu or untidy people.
1. A short educational video
which explains the
occasions during which one
should wash hands. At the
end of the videos, the
learners will be asked to
states the occasions during
which they wash their
hands.
2. The children will be
taught on the ideal ways of
washing hands
2. The content will include
a short instructional video
showing the learner how to

taken to have all the
learners wash their hands

and make corrections where
necessary.
3. The children will need to
identify the diseases which
will be prevented through
the washing of hands
(Cognitive Domain)
(Hoque, 2017).
3. Handwashing helps
prevent gastrointestinal
infections such as diarrhea
and respiratory infections
such as influenza (Liu, Ou,
Zhang, Shen, Hong, Ma,
Zhu, & Fontaine, 2016).
3. A wheel cart
highlighting the benefits of
handwashing and the
diseases it prevents will be
presented to the children.
Creativity
a) The flipped classroom strategy was also utilized in the classroom with the children being
asked to highlight the instances they washed their hands in the past and how they
intended to improve on handwashing in the future.
b) Visual aids, such as short educational and instructional videos, were used in the
classroom.
Planned Evaluation of Objectives
COMMUNITY TEACHING 8
1. I will pose questions to the learners to evaluate the knowledge they gained relating to the
importance of handwashing.
2. I will observe the children after the learning session to see if they improve on their
handwashing frequency.
3. I will ensure that each child can demonstrate the right way of washing hands.
4. I will evaluate the time each child takes to wash hands and the thoroughness and technique
they use.
Planned Evaluation of Goal
I will observe the handwashing techniques of the children after the first three classes. I
will thus compare the improvement for the techniques before and after the classes and the
frequency of handwashing among the children.
Planned Evaluation of Lesson and Teacher
An independent observer would be allowed during the learning session. After the session, the
observer would be required to provide feedback for some review questions, which would
include:
How would you rate the learning session?
COMMUNITY TEACHING 9
How would you rate the teacher?
Do you think the learner's expectations are met in the presentation?
How would you rate the usefulness and the relevance of the information presented in the
lesson?
What is the suggestion for future improvement of the session?
Barriers
Low attention span - Children will have low attention spans with a short session being
needed in the cause of the session so as to maximize their short attention span.
Lack of interest - The learners may generally lack interest in the session, which would
be a big challenge.
Therapeutic Communication
4.2 Communicate therapeutically with patients.
Beginning:
COMMUNITY TEACHING 10
The session will start with the learners being asked to highlight the common diseases in
the schools. The leaners will then be informed on how such diseases such as Flu and diarrhea can
be prevented with the washing of hands.
Ending:
To end the session, I will highlight the steps the learners can take to avoid diseases such
as Flu and diarrheas by effective hand washing. Different resources, such as instructional and
educational videos, will help the learners retain more information and utilize it to wash hands
and avoid infections in the future.
