Life in 1900 7
1 Look at the pictures. Read and complete the text with the correct letter.
Most people lived in houses without electricity, running water � or telephones. There was a lot of work to do in the house and children helped. Boys worked with their fathers. The girls cooked and cleaned the house 2 .
Sometimes there were ten or more children in a family. There wasn’t any TV 3 and there weren’t any computer games. Children played outside a lot of the time.
People travelled by horse. Horses were very important because they carried food 4 and pulled fire engines through the streets when there was a fire. Some people used bicycles 5 . There weren’t many cars and there weren’t any aeroplanes. People travelled long distances by train 6 .
People played musical instruments, listened to music 7 and danced. They enjoyed the cinema, but films were in black and white 8 . They lasted for about twenty minutes and there wasn’t any sound. Telephones 9 and cameras �0 were beginning to appear in �900.

individually. They could also do it in pairs. The pupils identify the
pictures and then read the text. Help them with any new vocabulary.
