TEACHERS’ DAY CELEBRATION AT NEW HORIZON PUBLIC SCHOOL
Every year the school performs Ganesha homa. This year too was no
exception. The homa was performed by Dr Mohan Manghnani, Chairman
NHEI, Mrs Renuka Manghnani, Executive Director NHEI, Mrs Sandhya Raman,
Principal NHPS, Mrs Jayanthi Ramakrishna, Headmistress NHPS- Pre Primary
Division, Council members, the entire student body and the teachers of NHPS.
Teachers' Day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of thDr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on 5 September, 1888. The
graduating class of New Horizon Public School made the occasion special by
preparing for it two months prior to the given date. The day saw the active
participation of both the Primary and High School students. The teachers
were treated to a variety of sounds and rhythm: each teacher was given a
special handmade card specially made for them by the students. The entire
high school students had put in their heart and soul into making this day
worth remembering for a long time to come.

RIDDLES FIND THE WAY TO THE BONFIRE
stSINGING COMPETITION - UKG 21 AUG.
thSHLOKA COMPETITION - LKG - 28 AUGUST
A competition where all our budding singers love to participate in. Armed
with a clear understanding of melodies and rhythm this year, it was sheer
delight to hear our UKg little ones crooning out beautiful songs with their
young melodious voices.
Shloka recitation is no mean task at all. But hearing our little LKg children
reciting shlokas would make you actually wonder. Credit to parents who have
taken it upon themselves to teach our young generation verses that are
generations old. This is reflected in the confidence in which the children
recite the shlokas, with no hiccups reciting perfectly. Kudos!!
Field trip-a day of fun, away from books, out in the open, learning in another
way. Excitement filled, the children set out on their field trip to HAL museum.
The sight of the fighter planes, rocket, jet, vehicle carrier had them excited
to the hilt. Eager to learn, the children listened attentively to teachers while
they explained about each of the displays. Young minds filled with fresh
knowledge, tummies filled with their favourite goodies, our little ones
returned after an eventful field trip.
stFIELD TRIP - LKG - 31 AUG.
Fun and frolic was the agenda of the day. The school took over the look of a
carnival environment. Beginning with decorations, one could spot mega
popcorn tubs, carnival masks, banners all over the area. The choice of
games were aplenty, food stalls had a variety to choose from. Children had
the time of their lives on the various rides in store for them. These were just
not all, there was shopping for the enthusiastic shopaholics, photo booth for
the album of memories, pottery for our budding potters, tattoos for the paint
lovers and much more. Karaoke, on the spot events kept the spirit of fun at
an all-time high throughout the day. Fest-O-Carnival, a first time event in the
history of NHPS, but that which will remain in everyone's memories for
a lifetime.

THE MIRACLE CURE
The sky was a dull gray ; the colour of smoke. The water was a beautiful hue
of blue. Prince Bernard gazed at the horizon before moving towards
Queen Adelaide. She was his foster mother, who had taken him in after his
birth parents, servants in the palace had died in an attack.
The Queen's biological son, the
heir to the throne, had run away
with most of the money in the
royal treasury, and left his family
bankrupt. Disgusted with the
actions of the heir, the subjects
had rebel led and publ ic ly
dethroned the Royal Family.
Bernard and the Queen were
out at sea as they had heard
rumours about gold being found
in an island off the coast of
Ireland and realised that this was
Bernard squirmed in his
bunk as he couldn't
sleep. He knew that his
'mother' had taken him
with her only because
her other true son was
now a disgrace. He had
always been the second
best in her eyes, the
one she had adopted
because she pitied him,
the one she was always
distant towards. As
The Queen then turned to Bernard
and said, ”Jump off the ship and try
to swim to an island using that
floating log, there is still a chance of
survival”. Bernard refused to go
without her. The Queen said,” Even
if I do survive, which is unlikely as
I am old and frail, that log can only
carry one person. I want you to live.”

Sixty miles away from the
Ebola River in the Republic of
Congo, there was a small
village called Yambuku where
a joyous family of four lived.
As an unfortunate turn of
events, a colony of bats living
in a cave near their family bit
them and left the entire
The doctors had contacted
the WHO officials since
they had never seen such
a peculiar case.
In about twenty-four hours
the entire population was

Soon the world health
organization and the
whole world knew about
the outbreak of this
dreaded disease which
was now spreading at an
astronomical speed, the
village was now scattered
with WHO officials and
scientists from all over the
world performing tests.
Sophie, a thirteen year old was a
happy, energetic girl in the local
school of Yambuku. Her father was a
fisherman and her mother a farmer
who had a cocoa plantation. Sophie's
favourite pastime was spending time
and playing in the caves near the river
with her best friends.
A month after the outbreak, Sophie started getting high fever and chills and
to the horror of her parents, she was diagnosed with Ebola.
On one of her father's daily fishing trips, his fishing rod fell into the river and
her father jumped into the river to get it back. He found something glittering
on the sea bed. He picked up the glittering stone and found his fishing rod
and swam back up. That day after he got home with the usual catch and the
rock, Sophie, sick in bed saw the stone.
She got up with great difficulty and went closer to analyse the stone. As she
touched the stone she miraculously felt a sudden surge of energy and felt all
her pains had melted away and all the spots on her skin had faded away. The
rock like minerals which Sophie had apparently touched, had gotten rid of the
abysmal disease. Sophie ran out of her room to share the great news with her
family and the entire village.
Soon the village was cured by the crystal. Samples of these minerals
were made into tablets and syrups and were sent to WHO headquarters all
over the world which were circulated in all parts of the world, as a cure and
as well as a precautionary measure. Sophie and her father were hailed as
heroes in all of Yambuku. Health and happiness was restored once again.

these thoughts were in his mind, he felt like the ship was slowly submerging.
When he went to the deck to investigate, he saw that there was a leak in the
ship! He saw the crew trying to prevent the ship from sinking but their efforts
were futile and the ship was slowly going underwater.
Bernard knew that the Queen had made up her mind and he stood at the
edge of the ship with tear-filled eyes. When he turned to look at the Queen
one last time before leaving the ship, she smiled and said,” You mean the

after the river. By about a week and half the population of the quaint and
serene village was no more. The once jolly and happy environment had now
become an environment filled with the cries and sadness of those who had
lost their loved ones.
Now reporters too were sprawling the village telling the world about this
massive outbreak.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a great Indian politician and was elected the Prime Minister of India
thrice. He was first elected as a member of the Indian Parliament when he was a member of the
Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS). About 20 years later BJS and a few other parties joined hands to
form the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP). It was then that he served as the Foreign Minister of India.
During his term he helped in enhancing the foreign relations with Pakistan as well as China. In
May, 1996, he was elected the Prime Minister of India but he only served for 13 days due to a
lack of majority in the Parliament. However, this incident did not make him give up. Again in 1998,
he succeeded in winning the elections and he became the only Prime Minister of India who was
not a member of the Indian National Congress and to have served a complete 5-year term.
During the 2-terms he served, he made many amazing contributions to the nation. He facilitated nuclear research in India by allowing 5 nuclear tests to be
conducted in the Pokhran desert in Rajasthan. During his term in 2000, Bill Clinton paid a visit to India. This was the first state visit to India by a US President
after 1978. Later in 2001, Vajpayee met the US President George Bush. These visits helped in accelerating the relations between both the nations. Vajpayee
was instrumental in starting the National Highways Development Project as well as the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna. He also introduced the Sarva
Siksha Abhiyan to improve the quality of education in schools.
Towards the end of 2005, Vajpayee announced his retirement from politics. In December, 2014, Vajpayee was awarded the Bharat Ratna. Vajpayee was a great
politician, prime minister and a poet. His contributions play a very important role in developing the nation. He breathed his last on 16th August, 2018 at the age
of 93. The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi declared that Vajpayee's birthday the 25th of December would be marked as Good Governance Day in his memory.
KERALA DISASTER-AUGUST 2018 Heavy rains along with low pressure over India's western coastline led to
severe floods in Kerala and the Kodagu district of Karnataka. Lakhs of people
have been displaced by these floods.
Digital Solutions Prove Critical
People turned digital to spread the message of stranded people and the
situation in various parts of Kerala.
Various government relief authorities turned to digital services like internet
and social media to assist those in need. While the Kerala State Disaster
Management Authority put up mobile numbers asking people to send their
locations on WhatsApp, the state government used Google Maps to create
the option of letting citizens upload their locations where help was needed,
simplifying the process of rescue operations. Hundreds of troops and dozens
of boats and helicopters helped to evacuate people from what officials say
was the worst flooding there in a century.
People Involvement
People from all over the country and expats living in UK and Gulf countries
were unified in their efforts to help the disressed in Kerala.
As the misery unfolded, individuals rose up as saviors and waded through
knee-deep water in their efforts.
Individuals started pouring donations in rehabilitation efforts. Various
businessmen and individuals also donated funds to help the relief work in
Kerala including NRI businessman M. A. Yusuf Ali who donated Rs 5 crore.
Celebrities like Kamal Hassan, Surya ,actor Sidharth, Tamil Actor Dhanush,
Vishal & Sivakarthikeyan Telugu actor Vijay , Prabhas, Allu Arjun and Vijay
Deverakonda have also donated to the flood rescue efforts. Karnataka film
celebrites under Puneet Rajkumar also collected donations toward
rehabiliation and relief.
While this may not be uncommon in any natural disaster, kudos to the
common man of this nation.
People from all walks of life cut across religions to help out in the best
possible way. Fishermen provided boats, twitter handlers spread messages
of people stranded, coordinating with multiple agencies to provide a list of
essential items needed in each relief camp so that target items reached the
needy, helping National Disaster Agencies in navigating the terrain for
quicker relief, opening of religious places for shelters. This is a true sense of
national unity. We are proud of it.
Not to be left, digital payment companies like Paytm, Amazon have created
opportunities for any individual to directly contribute through apps to relief
funds. The common man today is using all the various digital methodology
available in making an individual contribution to the people of Kerala – truly
a commendable show of how a nation and its citizens rise above artificial
boundaries created by caste, religion at a time when a state needs help.
Salute to the common man of India. Anusree KrishnanVIII C
