2013 GCN Club Guide
Hello and welcome to the second GCN Club Guide.
Following on from the success and popularity of the 2012 GCN Club Guide, the brochure was handed out at
numerous shows, events and tournaments all over the UK in 2012; the decision was made to create an even larger
and improved guide for 2013.
To say the 2012 guide was popular was a bit of an understatement, we handed out over 350 copies at Salute in
April 2012 alone, and with over 200 copies going to attendees at Games Day in September, we were merrily
plowing through our stocks. If you include all the other shows that the council attended and handed out the
guides we got though over 1200 copies. Add in the PDF versions I had been sending out to all newly registered
GCN clubs, we must have got near to using around 1500 copies. So I would have to say that would indicate that the
guide is proving to be popular not only with existing clubs, but with new or other clubs who had not considered
joining the network previously. The guide has quite clearly proven that it works very well and that there is a very
real need for it.
Onto 2013, are we doing the same again, not on your life, for 2013 the new guide is bigger, better, it has more
pages, more colour, and some sponsorship! The guide will evolve and grow in the future and we will learn what
works best as we go along. Just look back at the four page GCN club guide which was part of the Hammerhead
2011 show brochure so see how far we have come in such a short time.
The club guide has been designed and is being produced to allow the GCN to promote itself and all its member
clubs at the numerous events, shows, and tournaments that the GCN attends each and every year. These include
major shows like Salute, Hammerhead, Triples and Games Workshops Games Day to name but a few, as well asloads of other shows dotted around the UK.
The club guide includes the current up to date club directory, an event guide to the major shows and events in
2013, and also includes details of events run or attended by GCN member clubs.
What will be different for 2013 is that we plan to have multiple print runs of the guide, this will allow us to update
the club listings and event diary pages, meaning that new clubs registered with the network and new events will be
included in the guide as quickly as possible. In addition to this we are producing a cut down version of this guide
exclusively for Games Workshop, so that GW can send out a copy of the guide to clubs who contact Bek Hawkby
who is in charge of club liaison at GW. The other great news for the GW version of the guide is that there will be a
dedicated store copy in every one of the 140 Games Workshop stores in the UK, which will promote the network
even further than ever before.
Other news worthy of mention, the network now has a Scribd. account which will make sharing the GCN
newsletters, monthly shout outs and other information much easier and simpler. There will be no more need to
send out large or multiple PDF files to one person in a club, we now just need to send out a link to the latest files
which can be easily shared by the club contact, just go onto the Scribd. web site and type in
GamingClubNetwork to see the latest uploaded and achived files. We will also post news of the latest
newsletters and information on our Facebook page and the GCN web site.
Anthony Barnes, GCN president.

Volunteering.
The GCN needs you!
The Gaming Club Network needs your help, we rely on volunteers for our organisation to operate.
Without the support of dedicated individuals within clubs the GCN would simply not exist! Volunteering is not just
about work though, it can also be lots of fun too for both the volunteer and their respective clubs. The GCN needs
more volunteers, especially 'area representatives' these volunteers cover the area around their region and look
after a single club or a number of clubs in their region. The truth is we have never had enough area reps to cover
all the clubs in the network and we need more!
Are you a potential area rep, can you volunteer for some other role in the GCN, or is there someone in your club
who could step up to the plate and volunteer.
Not sure about what you could do, a really good starting point to volunteer in the GCN would be as a 'Knight' at
your own club, a Knight is the main contact point between your club and the GCN. All e-mail, annual information,
newsletters & the monthly Shout Outs etc are sent to the club contact and they then pass that information to the
rest of their club, its as simple as that, if your club needs to contact the GCN for any reason that is also done by
the club contact.
Some clubs do not have a dedicated club contact and this role will normally default to the clubs Chairman as leader
of the club. However there is no reason not to have both in your club, providing that a club member wants to do
the club contact role of course, so don't let that put you off volunteering as the more volunteers we can get in thenetwork the better, if you want more information, then by all means please get in touch with us.
We fully understand that not everyone can or wants to commit themselves too much, we all lead busy lives and
have work commitments and family life, especially those of us with young children, however, you can help support
the GCN in numerous small ways without having to give up all of your valuable free time. In fact the more people
who can manage to do a small amount of volunteering makes life easier for us all, as the old saying goes, many
hands make light work.
If you think that you might be interested in volunteering as a 'Knight' or would like to volunteer or assist in some
other area within the GCN, or you just want some more information about volunteering in general, then please
contact us to find out more about the network and how you can potentially help.

16/20
What is the GCN.
The GCN (Gaming Club Network) is a network of gaming clubs located throughout the United Kingdom. However,
as well as having member clubs in the UK, we now also have associate international member clubs, the first of
these clubs are located in the Philippines. Looking even further into to the future, we are hoping to expand the
international side of the network and have more associate clubs in other countries globally.
The aim of the GCN is to bring together both clubs and gamers:
For our member clubs to provide a safe and friendly environment for people of any age and ability to
attend and play tabletop games.
To set a unified standard of excellence, all our clubs have to meet minimum standards to be a member of
the GCN network, and many clubs go even further than this.
To enhance the gaming community and to bring together our member clubs at various events, shows,
tournaments and campaign weekends.
To encourage new or existing clubs to join the network.
To assist in the setting up of a gaming club, offering advice and help where required.
To get clubs or groups from different areas/regions to interact together.
To promote tabletop gaming in all of it forms.
What can the GCN do for your gaming club.
The GCN proactively advertises your club in numerous ways.
The GCN can offer your club an incredibly low priced package for your clubs PLI (Public Liability Insurance).
The chance to work alongside some of the largest miniature companies in the UK.
Exclusive club offers, promotions and deals from our partner companies.
Free starter club set from Warlord Games, (see Warlord Games promotional page for more details).
20% discount on all purchases from Warlord Games web store, (promotional code required from GCN).
Free starter club set from Mantic Games, (see Mantic Games promotional page for more details).
Partnerships and promotions.
The GCN currently has close working ties with Games Workshop, Battlefront Miniatures, Mantic Games
and Warlord Games.
The GCN is committed to working even closer with these companies for the mutual benefit of the entire
gaming community.
We are aiming to work with even more companies in the future.
We are aiming to increase the range of offers and promotions to our member clubs even more wherever
possible.
Working closely with companies brings direct benefits to GCN member clubs and also benefits the
respective companies as we are able to promote new products and game systems directly into our
member clubs, and in some cases to even be included in game/system development.
Advertising your club.
The network proactively promotes and advertises all of our member clubs wherever and whenever possible, we do
this by using numerous methods:
Club directory listing on the Games Workshop web site.
Club posters in your local/nearest Games Workshop stores. Games Workshop will only ever advertise
fully registered GCN member clubs in their stores.
Club directory listing on the GCN web site.
News and information via the GCN Facebook Page.
GCN community pages with club directory listings in Wargames Illustrated magazine.
GCN community pages with club directory listings in Miniature Wargames magazine.

The origins and a brief history of the Gaming Club Network.
The Gaming Club Network started its fledgling life after a couple of short meetings at Games Workshop to discuss
creating some kind of controlled clubs network. The initial meeting was held in 1998, called by Peter Hely, who at
that time was set to be the Games Workshop clubs Commissar General. A number of existing club organizers
attended this meeting and the idea of a controlled network was, shall we say, not very well received and the whole
idea was shot down in flames.
However, the idea did not end there fortunately, another proposal from Games Workshop was to look at starting
up an organised network of new clubs, run by Club Commanders, paid as Games Workshop key timers, this saw
twelve clubs commence operations in and around the early part of 1999.
Although things were proceeding in the right kind of direction, things were not going to be as easy as first thought,
and after a few meetings hosted by Games Workshop at their HQ in Lenton, Nottingham, it was decided that the
Club Commanders should resign as the only way to move forward, in any meaningful manner for the success and
long term survivability of the network was to make all the clubs independent.
So in March 2000 all of the twelve Club Commanders resigned from Games Workshops employ and the embryonic
network became independent from Games workshop around June 2000. From that date until the present time
whilst giving due credence to the support given by the Games Workshop organisation, the Gaming Club Network
has remained independent answering only to its membership.
Following on from our declaration of independence, Games Workshop appointed a member of staff, namely Che
Webster, as a liaison point between their organisation and the Gaming Club Network council, which was now the
governing body of our organisation. Che was given the title of The Club Guy and over the following decade
proved a staunch ally and tireless worker for the hobby.
Over the next two years the council met on a regular basis drawing up plans, and with Ches assistance and help
documents were created to regulate the organization, the first club Took-kit documentation was prepared during
this time. Initial benefits for member clubs were seen as being able to volunteer for local and national gaming
events, thus celebrating the hobby, clubs that were in the network also gained benefited by being advertised and
promoted in White Dwarf. The ethos of the network was seen as giving in terms of volunteer effort with no
remuneration in either cash or product. Later advantages for clubs included the value for money PLI insurance
scheme and free CRB checks.
In the period between 2003/2004 the network was opened up to new members and the expansionist phase began,
clubs were joining at an ever increasing rate and the need for additional documentation was required with
modifications and reviews on the existing document packs, this brought the network up to date with member
clubs requirements and the first council elections took place.
Games Workshop and the GCN today.
Although the GCN is an independent organisation, Games Workshop as a company maintain close ties to the
network and have a strong working relationship that benefits the gaming community as a whole. Games
Workshop has been working with the GCN since its inception and continues to support the network. We advertise
GCN member clubs (as long as that club plays at least one Games Workshop gaming system), on the Games
Workshop web site, our local store Facebook pages and in store. Club promotion in store takes the form of a
poster which we can produce for all fully registered GCN clubs. To find out more information about having a
poster for your club in store, please contact Bek Hawkby Community Coordinator. Working hours Mon-Wed and

The network is in need of more area representatives, with more reps located throughout the UK, the network can build a
gaming community that positively interacts together, and gets clubs from different areas and regions together for various
events, maybe set up a tournament or campaign weekend, or something along those lines.
The reps are dedicated individuals who want to get a little bit more involved in the wider gaming world, to actively help
organise shows, events and tournaments in their area, to help new clubs to set up, to recruit new or existing clubs into the
network, to promote inter club gaming and generally be an ambassador for the network and tabletop gaming in general.
Are you interested in becoming a GCN area rep, could you assist us in creating a larger network or reps in the UK and building a
wider gaming community. If so then why not get in touch with us for a chat and see what you could do to assist the network.
