The Usefulness of the ESPON Scientific Platform for PolicymakersESPON Database : Case Studies Interface
4-5 June 2014Nafplion, Greece
INTRODUCTION : The mysterious case study
M4D has decided to offer an extra case study for free to the ESPON Program. Can you look at the map and find the topic of this case study ?
1. EU Elections ?
2. Creative Class ?
3. Accessibility ?
4. Globalization ?

1. The usefulness of case studies for policy makers
2. The M4D search interface for case studies
3. Typology of case studies available
Plan
1. THE USEFULNESS OF CASE STUDIES FOR POLICYMAKERS
What does policymakers expect from ESPON ?
« ESPON should be a lover … and give policymakers what they want ! »Lewis D., ESPON meeting in Gödöllö, June 2011
ESPON is well adated to the needs of EU regional policy
1. Download Data ESPON Database Portal
2. Visualize Maps ESPON Mapfinder
3. Examine optionsESPON Policy Briefs
What can ESPON tell me about demographic trends and potential needs of external migrations ?
But regional data (NUTS2/3) does not cover all needs
Some policy makers request for more local data (ZOOM IN)
Some policy makers request for more global data (ZOOM OUT)
Example of ZOOM-IN case studies.
POLYCE Best Metropolis
Examples of ZOOM-OUT case studies
TIGER

ESPON TPGs can deliver two types of datasets: Key indicator datasets Case Study datasets
Introduction
• Cover the entire ESPON Space (EU28+4+CC)
• Respect the ESPON metadata and data template (INSPIRE)
• Rely on NUTS or Urban nomenclatures

• Does not necessary cover the entire ESPON Space
• May be data at local scale
• May be data to compare different regions in the world (Barcelona vs Mexico)

The mysterious map was a cartogram of Ile de France
This is very usefull for policy oriented case studies
Maps clearly suggest that people excluded from « creative class » and living in periphery of metropolitan area was more likely to support anti-EU political party.
Elections are crucial political topic for case studies …
Crossing thesocial and economic data with the results of EU election of 2009 and 2014 should be a priority adressed by policy makers to ESPON …
Thank you for your attention!
