ABOUT CLAT 2015
CLATCOMMON LAW ADMISSION TEST
2015
B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) PROGRAMME
Introduc"on
Na!onal Law School of India University (NLSIU) is the
first Indian University, established exclusively for legal
studies and research. The Na!onal Law School of India
Act, 1986, passed by Karnataka Legislature, provided the
statutory basis to this University. It became func!onal in
1988. Sponsored by the Bar Council of India, NLSIU
represents the unique partnership between and among
the Bar, Bench and Academia. Eminent judges and leading
lawyers have been associa!ng with the Law School
working side by side with a commi$ ed band of
academicians.
NLSIU had a modest beginning in an old building at
the Central College Campus of Bangalore University and
was shi)ed to the present campus in 1991. Therea)er it
has been a period of steady growth and we have now one
of the best equipped and beau!ful campuses. The Library,
i.e. Shri Narayana Rao Melgiri Na!onal Law Library is the
best Law Library in the country. The en!re campus
including the hostels is provided with wireless
connec!vity and as a result, the students can access
internet services from anywhere in the Campus and NLSIU
is the first Law School to achieve this dis!nc!on. All the
class rooms are equipped with LCD Projectors and other
facili!es.
There are independent hostels for men and women
and being a residen!al University, all the students have to
stay in the Hostels. The Library is kept open !ll 3 AM in
order to facilitate intensive use of academic resources.
There is a well-equipped moot court hall named
a)er Jus!ce M. Hidayatullah, former Vice-President of
India and former Chief Jus!ce of India. Every student of
NLSIU is expected to par!cipate ac!vely in the moot court
ac!vi!es. Our students have kept the highest Moo!ng
tradi!ons of the NLSIU by excelling in Na!onal and
Interna!onal Moot Court Compe!!ons.
The outstanding performance in Willem C. Vis
Interna!onal Commercial Arbitra!on Moot, Vienna and
very recently in Hong Kong Interna!onal Commercial
Arbitra!on Moot have brought glory to Na!onal Law
School of India University. NLSIU, Bangalore ,todate, is
the only Law School in India to have achieved the
dis!nc!on of winning Jessup World Cup twice, one in 1999

Various donors have established 16 Endowment
Chairs in NLSIU to promote the study of different subjects.
These subjects include Cons!tu!onal Law, Refugee Law,
Corporate Law, Interna!onal Trade Law, Alternate Dispute
Resolu!on, Intellectual Property Law, Consumer Law, etc.
Allen and Overy, a leading Bri!sh Law firm, has set up the
Chair on Interna!onal Financial Laws and Prof. Philipp
Wood, a leading authority on the subject, conducted
week's intensive course along with the a$ orneys of the
firm in NLSIU campus under the auspices of the Chair.
The NLSIU has well-developed research centres in
Juveni le Jus! ce, Inte l lectual Property Rights ,
Environmental Law, Women and the Law, Child and the
Law, Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Advanced Centre
on Cyber Law & Forensics among others.
Course Structure
NLSIU follows a trimester system whereunder an
academic year is divided into three parts and four subjects
are taught in each trimester. As a result, a student would
have completed sixty courses by the !me he / she
completes the five year term. The wide spread of subjects
helps our students to acquire extensive and intensive
knowledge of our legal system. All subjects are
compulsory upto the end of fourth year and op!onal
seminar courses are offered in the final year. These
op!onal seminar courses provide opportuni!es to
specialise in certain areas. For example, a student who
wishes to pursue career in corporate law may choose
seminar courses on accountancy, securi!es law, mergers
and acquisi!ons, etc. NLSIU encourages the involvement
of outside exper!se in offering seminar courses. In recent
years, the seminar courses have been offered in subjects
such as European Law, Telecommunica! on Law,
Nego!a!on Skills, Interna!onal Taxa!on, Media Law &
Ethics, etc. To find out the courses taught at NLSIU and
their distribu!on over the years, please check NLSIU
Website:www.nls.ac.in
Another significant method of involving scholars
NATIONAL LAW SCHOOL OF INDIA UNIVERSITY (NLSIU), BANGALORE
and another in 2013 and Manfred Lachs Moot Court
Championship twice, one in 2009 and another in 2012.
Our students have dis!nguished themselves in other
Na!onal and Interna!onal Moot Court Compe!!ons,
Debate compe!!ons, Quiz programmes, etc.
One of our graduates Mr. Basavanagouda S. Pa!l has
been awarded the SILF MILAT Best Law Student in
recogni!on of the outstanding performance in scholarship
and professionalism on the part of students pursuing the
LL.B. programme in the Law Colleges of SAARC region.
In fact, one of the core ingredients of the NLSIU life is
vibrant deba!ng, moo!ng and conference culture. Some
of the most exci!ng compe!!ons students take part in are
client counseling and nego!a!on compe!!ons, which
promote the art of speaking without arguing. This goes a
long way in making a successful lawyer. Another aspect of
life at Law School is the Legal Services Clinic. One of the
avowed objec!ves of the Legal Services Clinic is to bridge
the gap created between the legal procedures and the
commons man. In pursuance of the same, the Legal
Services Clinic took up several ini!a!ves, including but not
limited to, Prisons Project which involved providing legal
aid to the under-trial prisoners, organising street plays and
also conduc! ng Legal Literacy Programs around
Bangalore. In fact LSC handled more than 100 cases the
previous academic year alone.
The Na!onal Law School of India Review, The Indian
Journal of Law and Technology, Socio-Legal Review and the
Indian Journal of Interna!onal Economics Law - these are
the four pres!gious journals being published from the
NLSIU. All of them are peer reviewed and have received
rave reviews. All these journals have been handled by the
students only.
As part of the outreach programmes, NLSIU has
renewed the earlier prac!ce of interac!ng with the law
colleges in India in an a$ empt to extend the academic
support to them from !me to !me.
Mr. Raag Yadava has been awarded the Rhodes
Scholarship, a pres!gious scholarship for the year 2014.
This is for the 19 !me and 9 year in succession that NLSIUth th
students have been selected for the Rhodes Scholarship.
3 (three) of our first year B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) students
have won the pres!gious Aditya Birla Scholarship. The
Aditya Birla Scholars will receive scholarship from Aditya
Birla Founda!on for their en!re studies in NLSIU. At the
moment, there are 13 Aditya Birla Scholars pursuing their
under-graduate studies in NLSIU, Bangalore in different
years of study.

NATIONAL ACADEMY OF LEGAL STUDIES AND RESEARCH
(NALSAR) UNIVERSITY OF LAW, HYDERABAD
About the University
The Na!onal Academy of Legal Studies and Research
(NALSAR) University of Law in Hyderabad was established
in 1998. It is an autonomous educa!onal ins!tu!on
engaged in teaching, research and extension ac!vi!es in
law and allied disciplines. The full-!me students reside in
the campus which is spread over 50 acres and is adjacent
to the Shameerpet Lake, located at a distance of 26
kilometers from the city of Hyderabad. With a spacious
and well-stocked Library, internet access in the student
hostels, Moot Court Hall, conference venues, auditorium
and sports facili!es, the campus enables the all-round
development of students.
In a short span of 16 years, NALSAR has emerged as a
leading des!na!on for legal educa!on in India and its
graduates have made a mark in career avenues such as
li!ga!on, the judicial services, teaching, research, social
advocacy, interna!onal organisa!ons and transac!onal
lawyering among others. It has been ranked as the No.1
law school in India as per the India TodayNielsen Survey
for the years 2008, 2011 and 2013. It was ranked as the top
law school by Outlook Magazine in 2012. Over the last
decade, it has been consistently ranked among the top two
law universi!es in India. Graduates from this ins!tu!on
have received pres!gious scholarships such as the Rhodes
Scholarship to study at Oxford University (2003, 2007,
2010, 2011, 2013 and 2015), the Gates Cambridge
Scholarship (2012), Scholarship to study Air and Space Law
at Leiden University, Netherlands (2012), Commonwealth
Scholarship (2011), Felix Scholarship (2011) and the Young
India Fellowship (2011) among others. Beginning in 2012,
incoming students have secured the Aditya Birla
scholarships with as many as four students receiving it in
2014. Since its incep!on, teams from this ins!tu!on have
won a large number of domes!c moot court compe!!ons.
Teams represen!ng NALSAR have reached the semi-finals
(top four) at the world rounds of the pres!gious Philip C.
Jessup Interna!onal Law Moot held in Washington, D.C.
(U.S.A.) in 2006 and 2010. In 2012, its' teams emerged
victorious at the 19 William C. Vis Interna!onalth
Commercial Arbitra!on Moot held in Vienna (Austria) and
at the Monroe E. Price Oxford Media Law Interna!onal
Moot held in England.
Courses offered
The progress of the ins!tu!on has been shaped by
an insistence on holis!c 'jus!ce' educa!on which exposes
students to the different facets of legal systems and how
they interact with public policy, social ins!tu!ons and
markets. In other words, the university's ac!vi!es try to
emphasize interdisciplinary linkages that enable its'
faculty members, students and researchers to both
understand and cri!que the ra!onale behind legisla!on,
execu!ve acts and judicial decisions while also developing
the ability to propose construc!ve solu!ons for socio-
economic problems. This is informed by a strong belief in
the norma!ve poten!al of the law.
5 year B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) programme
Among the full-!me taught programmes, the 5-year
integrated B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) programme has swi)ly
acquired an enviable reputa!on, especially since

admissions to the same are conducted through the highly
compe!!ve Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). Every
year, the ins!tu!on welcomes a group of very bright
students who have to navigate a challenging yet engaging
curriculum that helps them to acquire knowledge while
also honing their research, wri!ng and public speaking
skills. The undergraduate students are required to
accumulate credits by pursuing the mandatory courses
prescribed by the Bar Council of India (BCI) during the first
three years and therea)er op!onal courses devised by the
University. Beginning in 2012, the curriculum has
undergone considerable change and gives students a lot of
flexibility in choosing subjects. This allows them to deepen
their learning in certain areas while also benefi* ng from
the ongoing research ac!vi!es of faculty members. The
founda!onal courses in History, Poli!cal Science,
Economics, Sociology and English offered during the first
two years are built upon in inter-disciplinary elec!ve and
seminar courses offered during the fourth and fi)h year.
Among the op!onal courses, lecture-based elec!ves
and research-based seminars with varying credit loads are
offered to the students. While most of them are offered by
regular faculty members, the University invites eminent
judges, lawyers, scholars and alumni to teach shorter one-
credit courses to expose students to current legal
developments and new scholarship. Each credit is
equivalent to 16 hours of class teaching. The op!onal

1 year LL.M. programme
Beginning with the 2013-14 academic year, the
LL.M. programme has been shortened to dura!on of one-

the programme has become quite intensive and includes a
combina!on of taught courses as well as sustained
research work. As per the guidelines laid down by the
University Grants Commission (UGC), a student must
complete three mandatory subjects, six op!onal subjects
and a disserta!on as part of the one-year LL.M.

interests and career plans. Out of the six op!onal courses,
each student has to complete at least four op!onal
courses in their preferred area to obtain a specializa!on.
At present, there are six specializa!ons on offer to
postgraduate students, namely those in
(1) Legal Educa!on, Pedagogy and Research,
(2) Corporate and Commercial Laws,
(3) Intellectual Property Laws,
(4) Interna!onal Business and Trade Laws,

semester schedules and subject to the university rules on
the minimum number of enrolments required for a paper.
Students who opt for subjects cu* ng across these
clusters can also acquire a general LL.M. degree. While the
LL.M. programme is primarily meant to prepare students
for careers in teaching and research, NALSAR recognizes
that it can serve as the fulcrum for advanced learning in a
variety of professional se* ngs. LL.M. students are also
given opportuni!es to work as Teaching Assistants for the
mandatory subjects taught to the undergraduate
students. In recent years, quite a few LL.M. graduates have
also been absorbed in the faculty.
M.Phil and Ph.D. Programmes:
Nevertheless, there is a strong emphasis on research
programmes, with postgraduate students having the
op!on to move on to the One Year M. Phil. programme and
eventually the Ph.D. programme. In the long-run, the
quality of a university is gauged by the range and depth of
the scholarship produced by its faculty members and
research scholars. Hence, efforts are being made to
improve the standards of legal scholarship in India through
these research programmes. The applica!on details for
these research programmes are usually made available on
the NALSAR website on an annual basis.
2 year full-"me M.B.A. programme:
In a pioneering move among the autonomous law
universi!es, NALSAR started a two-year M.B.A. (Master's
in Business Administra!on) programme in 2013 with the
aim of integra!ng higher educa!on in laws and
management studies with specializa!ons in Court
Management, Corporate Governance, Financial Services
& Capital Markets, Sustainability and Innova!on
Management, Marke!ng Management, Human Resource
Management and Business Regula!ons.
Innova"ve Programmes for Professionals:
To broaden the areas of learning at the University,
ini!a!ves have been taken such as the launch of a 2-year
Masters' degree in Avia!on Law and Air Transport
Management and a 2-year Master's Degree in Space and
Telecommunica!on Laws. These are in the nature of
execu!ve programmes which are targeted at working
professionals from the respec!ve sectors. So far, they have
elicited a very favorable response from experts in these
fields. Faculty members from NALSAR are also involved in
delivering a 2-year Master's Degree in Taxa!on and
Business Laws for proba!oners of the Indian Revenue
Service (IRS) at the Na!onal Academy of Direct Taxes
(NADT) in Nagpur. To reach out to a larger sec!on of the
public, the University also offers Post-Graduate Diplomas
in several areas that have prac!cal relevance, namely
Patent Laws, Media Laws, Cyber Laws, Interna!onal
Humanitarian Law, Avia!on Law and Air Transport
Management (PGDALATM) and GIS & Remote Sensing
Laws. These diplomas are transacted through periodic
contact classes with examina!ons held at the end of the
academic year. They are open to graduates from
disciplines other than law as well. In addi!on, Post-
Graduate Diplomas in Alterna!ve Dispute Resolu!on
(ADR) and Family Dispute Resolu!on (FDR) are offered as
part-!me courses in collabora!on with the Interna!onal
Centre for Alterna!ve Dispute Resolu!on (ICADR) unit in
Hyderabad.
Collabora"ons with Foreign Universi"es
In recogni!on of the increasing importance of
compara!ve and interna!onal dimensions of higher
educa!on, the University has signed Memorandums of
Understanding (MoUs) with as many as 29 foreign
Universi!es located in the United States of America,
Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland,
Australia, Israel, The Netherlands and Singapore for
purposes such as exchange of faculty members, students
and collabora!ve research projects. These partnerships
enable faculty and students at NALSAR to develop a rich
understanding of legal cultures from other parts of the
world and consequently enhance the quality of
discussions and scholarship in the ins!tu!on.
Research Centres:
To create support structures for advanced learning
and crea!ve scholarship, NALSAR has set up dedicated
16
research centres whose ac!vi!es are co-ordinated by
senior faculty members. These include the M.K. Nambyar
SAARC LAW Centre, Centre for Air and Space Law, Centre
for Environmental Laws, Centre for Tribal and Land Rights,
Centre for Corporate Laws and Governance, Centre for
Disability Studies, Centre for Legal Philosophy and Jus!ce
Educa!on, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Centre and
the Centre for Family Laws. The broad mandate of these
centres is to produce scholarly publica!ons, policy
recommenda!ons and newsle$ ers connected to these
areas apart from organizing guest lectures and discussions
to build awareness about them. There are several ongoing
research projects that are anchored by faculty members.
For instance, in 2013, NALSAR was chosen by the Ford
Founda!on to conduct a three-year study for 'Knowledge
based interven!ons to strengthen the realiza!on of Socio-
Economic Rights'. The University is also part of the Global
Internet Governance and Advocacy (GIGA) project under
the aegis of the Department of Informa!on Technology,
Government of India. In addi!on, NALSAR has been
assigned the task of managing and opera!ng the Legal
Informa!on Ins!tute (LII) of India (since March 2011)
which is among the largest open access portals for
dissemina!ng legal informa!on in India.
Legal Aid and Outreach programmes:
As part of its social outreach programmes, NALSAR
frequently provides specialized training to para-legals,
government officials and resource-persons from Non-
Government Organisa!ons (NGOs). The Legal Aid Centre
organizes legal literacy programmes at different loca!ons
and facilitates access to legal advice and representa!on for
the poor in collabora!on with the State Legal Services
Authority and the State Human Rights Commission.
Publica"ons:
NALSAR currently publishes as many as nine
scholarly journals on an annual basis. The NALSAR Law
Review is edited and managed by a commi$ ee of faculty
members. There are several student-edited journals which
have a$ racted high-quality submissions.
Faculty:
NALSAR has a team of highly dedicated and
competent faculty, comprising of a good mix of
experienced scholars and young talent. The faculty has
been drawn from pres!gious na!onal and interna!onal
universi!es. Addi!onally, NALSAR also has an open door
policy for its alumni to supplement the teaching efforts of
its faculty. In addi!on to teaching, faculty members are
engaged in various research projects on cu* ng edge
issues of law and policy reform. For Faculty profiles, visit
www.nalsar.ac.in

Learning & Teaching Methods
We believe that learning how to learn law is more
meaningful than learning law for if we give a fish to a
woman, we feed her for a day; but if we tell her 'how to
fish, she will feed her for the whole life. We strongly
believe that in the class rooms the students and teachers
create knowledge' rather than the teacher transmi* ng
knowledge to the students. We learn law both as it is and
as it ought to be. Ought to be approach is supplemented
with the methods of social sciences and humani!es Case
method and Socra!c method of learning and teaching are
the characteris!c features of the class room discussion.
Moot court compe!!ons, client counseling skills,
language and computer proficiency are the regular and
vibrant features of NLIU. Constant and persistent
endeavors are made to keep abreast with the current
na!onal and interna!onal teaching prac!ces and to
ensure that the curriculum meets the needs, challenges
and opportuni!es of legal educa!on in the twenty-first
century.

Review, (2) NLIU Journal of Intellectual Property Law and
(3) NLIU Law Review. University has also published
research monographs on different topics.
Annual Lectures and Conferences

Dwivedi Memorial Lecture and special regional and global
conferences on contemporary topics.
In addi!on to regular teaching and research, training

and other target groups are con!nuing features of the
University. University is ac!vely engaged in conduc!ng
research and consultancy projects. To men!on a few, it

Resources Development , New Delhi; ICSSR, UGC, UNICEF,
