2016: Thank You Reception 2016: Being innovative to save lives
To celebrate the success of CITY GIVING DAY 2016 and to say thank you to all the companies that took part.
Kindly hosted by our friends at EY, the reception was attended by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress. During the evening we gave out seven awards to companies who we felt went the extra mile:
Making the world a smaller place - Linklaters LLPIn a humanitarian crisis, the location of the most vulnerable people is fundamental information for delivering food, shelter, medical care and other services where they are most needed. Although it may be hard to believe, millions of people around the world are not represented on any accessible map. For the last two years, Linklaters’ offices around the world have been supporting MapSwipe (created by The Red Cross, MSF and the Humanitarian Open Street Map team) to allow volunteers to create maps using satellite imagery. Anybody can get involved with this project as long as you have a smartphone that allows you to download apps.
“MapSwipe is portable, meaningful and packs a great impact, whether it is five minutes on a bus or an hour with friends. That’s why we encouraged all of our people to MapSwipe at City Giving Day 2016.”MATT SPARKES, Head of Corporate Responsibility, Linklaters LLP

2016: Companies working together 2016: Bringing the community together
In 2016 a number of organisations collaborated together to fundraise for their nominated charities and to raise awareness of their charitable giving. By collaborating, these companies brought a real sense of community to CITY GIVING DAY.
Getting to know the neigh-bears - Aberdeen Asset Management and Bank of Ireland Aberdeen Asset Management and Bank of Ireland teamed up to raise money for their respective charity partners; Barnardo’s and London Air Ambulance. Employees from both companies put on a cake sale and competed with one another in a static cycling challenge, where they were cheered on by their colleagues and by representatives from Barnardo’s and London’s Air Ambulance. Together, both organisations raised over £1,000 and were thrilled to see staff come together for City Giving Day.
A Long Long Lunch - The Don Restaurant The Don Restaurant took over St Swithins Lane to host The Long Long Lunch in partnership with three of the City’s best restaurants; Coq d’Argent, 1 Lombard Street and Hispania. Generously supported by some of their regular suppliers, the event started at 12.30pm in St. Stephen Walbrook Church, with a glass of Charles Heidsieck champagne, canapés and music, followed by the Long Long Lunch itself - a splendid three-course meal for over 100 people with each restaurant taking responsibility for one course. The diners also enjoyed wines from Trinity Hill, Nespresso coffee and macaroons from Ladurée all whilst being served by enthusiastic catering students from Carshalton College.
“The day provided a great opportunity for our staff to get to know each other better and to support two fantastic charities.”EMMA SWADEN, UK Internal Communications Associate, Bank of Ireland UK
“City Giving Day brings everyone together, everyone has fun - it’s fantastic!” GEORGES DUGARIN, The Don Restaurant

2016: Inspiring the next generation
Several companies used CITY GIVING DAY as an opportunity to engage with local schools - sharing their knowledge, supporting reading schemes and running mentoring events, to name just a few.
Inspiring the next generation - UBSUBS’s established Community Affairs programme supports education and social entrepreneurship initiatives in our local communities. UBS celebrated City Giving Day in 2016 by inviting primary school pupils to our offices to learn about different careers in the firm. The volunteering event was organised with our community partner Inspiring the Future and we had a total of 168 primary school children from four primary schools who met with 67 UBS employee volunteers.
“It was an enjoyable challenge to articulate what I do in a way that could be easily understood and linked back to fundamental skills. I felt that the pupils were walking away with new knowledge and insight, and building confidence as the conversations progressed.” UBS EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEER
“We were overwhelmed by the number of volunteers we had for the day and the level of engagement from the students of Twickenham Academy was fantastic.” ALLANAH CORDINGLEY, Human Resources Advisor, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton
2016: Involving school partners
Completing the deal - Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton On City Giving Day 2016 Cleary Gottlieb officially launched its involvement with the National Literacy Trust’s “Words for Work” programme, which brings businesses and schools together to empower young people towards successful employment.
We invited 30 students from Twickenham Academy to take part in a number of activities aimed at introducing them to aspects of law firm life and developing their presentation, interviewing and problem-solving skills. Students were able to interview 12 volunteers from areas of the business and take part in an office tour that required them to complete a fictional deal involving the sale of part of a business.

2016: Going around the world
Some companies used CITY GIVING DAY as an opportunity to run events at all their offices both in the UK and further afield - bringing their businesses together with a common goal.
Around the World - Capital Group On City Giving Day 2016 Capital Group hosted a number of events to highlight its charity partnerships and volunteer opportunities for employees. The highlight of the day was a European cross-office cycle challenge with teams from London, Geneva, Milan, Madrid and Luxembourg. The European offices clocked up kilometres on their commutes, in their gyms or socially after work. Collectively 2511kms were recorded and £3,164 raised for charity.
2016: Pledging to do more
“Next year the cycle challenge will aim to go global incorporating teams from Capital Group offices in the US and Asia.” MAEVE MURRAY-SMITH, Corporate Charitable Giving, Capital Group
The Big Pledge - Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) In 2016 the FCA worked in collaboration with Benefacto to design and deliver an innovative pledge site for City Giving Day. The aim of our online pledge site was to encompass the four themes of our Corporate Responsibility Programme - Diversity & Inclusion, Community Engagement, Environment and Charity. The site was a huge success with 559 people pledging to do something good over a three-month period, and on City Giving Day itself we raised £1681 for our official charities.
“One of the most exciting things about our approach to City Giving Day is that the impact of the day is measurable.” TRUDI MORGAN, Community Engagement Manager, Financial Conduct Authority

Among the member firms with individuals receiving certificates for their contributions were: Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays, BNY Mellon, Citi, Crédit Agricole, Credit Suisse, Lloyds Bank, Nomura and UBS.
“It’s fantastic to be able to recognise some of the unsung heroes doing great community work in our member firms.”SIMON LEWIS, Chief Executive, AFME

2016: Paint the City red!
From ties to dresses and socks to scarves, lots of companies chose to celebrate CITY GIVING DAY by wearing something red.
“Wearing red and not the usual dark business clothes really united and changed the atmosphere of our office.” CLARE SILVERTON, Corporate Communications Manager, National Australia Bank
2016: Challenge the Lord Mayor
On CITY GIVING DAY 2016, the Lord Mayor visited 11 businesses around the City where he was challenged to cycle the length of the Panama Canal (as part of a team on a static cycle!), to play Operation watched by a London Air Ambulance crew member and to take part in a table tennis match against two boys from Greenhouse Sport, a youth sport development charity.
Why don’t you challenge the Lord Mayor in 2017? Tell us your ideas!
