Objectives

Where there is no problem, there is no

endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service; as defined by PMI (Project Management Institute) www.pmi.org
Why a project proposal?
• Defines project’s strategic plan
• Authorization from project sponsor to project team to spend resources
• Defines the project team’s pace and expendable resources ($$ or man hours)
• Consensus between team and project sponsor
Charter or Project Proposal
Gives authority to proceed with a project

Sections of Project Proposal
1. Goal – problem statement, WHY
2. Objectives – requirements, background, benefits, in-scope and out of scope, WHAT
3. Recommendations – state all possible solutions with reasoning HOW
4. Project plan – Milestones with dates
5. Roles and Responsibilities

• Success factors – risks stated, assumptions stated
• Signatures – authorizes the project team to go forward and be successful
Operations verses Projects
• Both are– performed by people– Constrained by limited resources– Planned, executed and controlled
• Differences are– One is on-going/repetitive– One is temporary/unique
Project Management
PM is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities in order to meet or exceed key stakeholder needs or expectations.

Steps to Gantt Chart
• Project team comes up with all possible tasks
• Organize into a WBS (group tasks logically)
• Estimate task – using historical data
• Enter into MS Project – Gantt Chart
