2 CIRCLE OF SUPPORT
Pame Schmider, Arden Flamson, Ethan Zohn, Ginny Ueberroth, and Sandy Sewell
Circle 1000 celebrated its 23rd Annual Founders’ Brunch with Ethan Zohn as the keynote speaker. Zohn captivated and inspired the entire audience. He eloquently wove his recent battle and survival with CD20-positive Hodgkin’s Lymphoma cancer with stories about his experience on reality television show “Survivor Africa.” Speaking from the heart, Zohn epitomized a perspective that everyone could relate to about fighting cancer and moving forward as a “survivor”. He now celebrates January 1 as his new birthday, marking the completion of his stem-cell replacement and its success. For the first time since completing his cancer treatment, Zohn spoke openly and graciously to an audience of more than 500 Circle 1000 supporters, sharing many of the peaks and valleys he continually faced and conquered during his various cancer treatments. More than once, the audience became quiet and still, as each guest was pulled into every heartache, challenge and triumph. His speech enlightened each guest with a perfect combination of wit, truth and sensitivity about living with cancer. As an avid soccer player and after winning $1 million dollars on the reality television series “Survivor Africa,” Zohn established the Grassroots Soccer Organization in Africa to educate the youth about HIV/Aids through soccer, a revered sport in Africa. Following his diagnosis, Zohn once again set out to make a difference and became a cancer awareness advocate. He decided to become a megaphone for his generation diagnosed with cancer. Zohn was recently named as the Survivor show’s ambassador to the national campaign of Stand Up 2 Cancer and is committed to rallying the global cancer community toward a common goal: to outwit cancer and vote it off the planet. “I want to see everyone diagnosed
with cancer become a survivor – that would be the ultimate reward,” says Zohn. Circle 1000 echos that very same sentiment. A DVD was viewed during the brunch highlighting the origins and visions of Circle 1000, including the significant accomplishments and progress supporters have made possible over Circle 1000’s 23-year history. Thank you all for your dedication to Circle 1000. Our annual brunch is similar to a Thanksgiving gathering, albeit it occurs in the spring. As we celebrated our 23rd year, we once again gathered together and gave thanks to our Circle 1000-Circle of Supporters. Your generous contributions and participation bonds us together and makes us a caring and loving family who support each other. Your loyalty enables Hoag Cancer Institute to provide world-class cancer care right here in our neighborhood. Surviving these economic times is challenging, remaining a top-ranked cancer institute is challenging, and battling an illness as cancer is challenging. Your commitment to Circle 1000 and Hoag Cancer Institute keeps us vital and strong. In Circle 1000’s 23-year history, contributions have totaled more than $11.4 million. On behalf of Circle 1000 Founders’ Committee, Hoag Cancer Institute and Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian we thank you for your 2010 contributions. Contributions were designated in the following areas:
• $100,000-CellBiologyLab
• $100,000-OncologyNursing
• $100,000-SandySewellOncologyNursingScholarshipEndowment
• $633,000-HoagCancerInstituteExpansion

CIRCLE OF SUPPORT
Pame Schmider
Enthusiastic, energetic, creative, with a passion for making a difference, all those words exemplify Circle 1000’s Chair, Pame Schmider.
Pame became involved with the Circle 1000 committee several years ago. She deeply believes Circle 1000 makes a difference in the lives of those with cancer. Her mother is a survivor of polio, a disease that at one time had no cure. It is her hope that cures for all cancers will soon be discovered.
“The amazing history and tradition that has evolved over the course of the last 23 years is due to this highly successful group of women,” states Pame. “As Circle 1000 chair, I have followed in the footsteps of seven remarkable previous chairs. Each has brought to the table an incredible vision with fresh ideas that have engaged the community and committee, year after year, in their support of Hoag. I am truly honored to serve as chair of Circle 1000.”
The 2010 Circle 1000 Annual Founders’ Brunch was Pame’s first public appearance as chair. The event was attended by more than 500 guests, and raised more than $1 million for Hoag Cancer Institute.
“Cancer is not contagious, but your continued generosity is!”
Britton Caillouette and Carrie

PPame Schmider – Vin Jorgensen Award Winner
BBritton Caillouette – 10 Year Survivor ArticleBritton Caillouette is an amazing young man. As an eighth grader, Britton’s life changed dramatically when he was diagnosed with a very aggressive osteosarcoma in his left femur. The treatment to cure this cancer is very complicated. Britton’s father is one of Hoag’s leading orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Jamie Caillouette, and he knew that if Britton had knee replacement surgery at this age, he would have to have it replaced several times during his lifetime. After completing chemotherapy treatment, Britton and his family chose to do bone graph surgery in Seattle. After surgery, Britton suffered complications when a vein was blocked with a blood clot and he underwent angioplasty. Chemotherapy was now too risky. He continued to persevere with chronic pain and required crutches. Fast forward a couple years later, Britton had endured many treatments, but was once again enjoying life as a sophomore at Sage Hill and had started dating a girl named Carrie. During a routine scan of his lungs, a nodule was found which meant that his cancer was in Stage II. Surgery was required to remove the nodule. Chemotherapy was still considered too risky. Soon after the surgery, Britton felt pain in his knee. He thought it was from a broken screw in the bone marrow graph. His family and
Carrie traveled back to Seattle, but the news was not good. Another tumor was found in Britton’s leg and he underwent an amputation. Britton's tumor cells were brought to Hoag Cancer Institute's Cell Biology Lab where they created a patient-specific vaccine from his cells. Britton was injected once a month for six months and then was fitted with a prosthesis. “He never complained or felt sorry for himself,” shared his mother Dori Koll, “he always remained and continues to remain positive.” Britton graduated from Sage Hill and attended Stanford University. He is following his dream and is a partner in a film production company called High Low Film, with an emphasis on documentaries. In August, Britton married his high school sweetheart Carrie and they live in San Francisco with their Irish wolfhound. One of the guests who attended their wedding was Dr. Michael Brant-Zawadzki, ExecutiveMedicalDirectorofHoagNeurosciences, whoinitiallytreatedBrittonwhenhewasfirstdiagnosedwithcancer.HetoldBritton, all those years ago, he would dance at his wedding and indeed he did! Britton is celebrating 10 years cancer free!

MMark Your Calendar, Save the Date for April 27, 2011
Circle 1000’s 24th Annual Founders’ Brunch is set for Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at the Hilton
Orange County, Costa Mesa. Guest speaker will be author Kelly Corrigan. Corrigan’s book, The
Middle Place, is written as a beautiful memoir that intertwines her own story of cancer with that
of her larger-than-life, Irish-American father, who at the very same time was battling his own
cancer. Corrigan openly and tenderly, with a great amount of humor combined, illustrates the
unbelievably powerful strength between father and daughter and the journey they walked together,
mixed with the unbreakable bond of family. Join us for this special morning of sharing.
