April 29, 2018Fifth Sunday of Easter (B)
Acts 9:26–31; 1 Jn 3:18–24; Jn 15:1–8Jesus himself picked the image of the vine to describe
the reality of our being united to him and the Father. Andthis was not lost on early Christians. One of the first im-ages they used to mark their graves was the vine andbranches.
An amazing thing about a vine and its branches is thatyou canʼt tell the difference between them. Look at agrapevine and try to determine which is the branch andwhich is the vine or trunk. You canʼt, since it appears asone seamless reality. Jesus invites us to be so close tohim that we appear to be just like him—“other Christs,” asour name Christian suggests!
Second, the sap that springs from the vine, runs throughthe branches, and matures in the fruit is all the same. Thelife in Jesus and the life in us as Christians are the same.He has given us the same Spirit that animated him, theHoly Spirit.
This is why Jesus can guarantee that, if we remain inhim by listening to his word and following his Spirit, we willdefinitely bear much fruit. His word and Spirit cannot re-main sterile in us.
The most important result of being united to Jesus andbearing fruit is that not only will we be united to him in thislife, but this friendship will last for all eternity. Thatʼs whyearly Christians put vines on their tombs.

I have called you by name, you are mine” Isaiah 43:1
Is God calling you? Do you want to learn more about the Catholic Faith? Are you interested in becoming part of our Catholic family?
The RCIA Process (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process by which those interested in becoming a Roman Catholic Christian learn about our faith. Through interviews, classes and discussions, adults are prepared to accept the challenge of our baptism and encouraged to live the message and teachings of Jesus Christ. The RCIA process is also for those Catholics who have not been educated in our faith and have not received the Sacraments of Confirmation and Communion.
If you, or some one you know is interested in determining if God is calling you to be part of our faith community, please contact the Rectory office at 718-335-2626 to set up an appointment with one of our Priests.
