SSOLEMINITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE – November 22, 2015
St. John the Evangelist Annual Financial Report Fiscal Year Ended August 31, 2015 Dear Parishioners of St. John’s, On behalf of the Finance Council, we share with you the financial highlight report for the fiscal year ended August 31, 2015. The full financial statements of the parish were recently presented to and approved by the members of the Finance Council prior to submission to the Archdiocese Finance Office.
Overall, the financial condition of the Parish continues to improve. Under the prudent management of our Pastor, Fr. Quinn and guided by the Finance Council several large initiatives were completed this year while continuing our responsibility to reduce the outstanding debt owed to the Archdiocese.
Weekly contributions including Parish Pay, which fund our fixed operating expenses have remained stable, averaging $19,400. Participation in Parish Pay, our electronic giving program has increased 29% from last year to $15,000 a month. Parish Pay significantly helps to maintain a steady cash flow particularly during the low attendance months. We continue to seek ways to reduce our normal operating expenses. This year, these expenses were down by 4% or $49,000. This is in addition to the previous year when normal expenses were reduced by $95,000. In doing this, we were able to fund major projects such as those completed this year without adding to our debt.
Reflected in the 2015 financial statements is the completed sale of one of the two lakefront properties placed on the market last year. The proceeds from the sale were used to repay an additional $50,000 toward our current debt and to help fund several major projects completed this year. These were needed to improve the safety and security of the buildings as well as to upgrade our facilities. These projects include: renovated bathrooms and offices in the school building, a handicap accessible bathroom, a family room and a welcome center office in the main church, work to correct defective electric kitchen circuits and other upgrades in the social hall.
Another major project nearing completion is our new Prayer Garden. This project was 100% funded through the generous donations from parishioners and corporations as well as a significant amount of pro-bono services provided by local contractors. The project began as a way to reclaim this area and give our parishioners a quiet outdoor setting to pray.
The parish continues to make significant progress toward repaying its outstanding liabilities owed to the Archdiocese. In 2012, the debt was over $2.5 million consisting of loans and outstanding bills from the parish and the former school. The debt has since been reduced by $952,384 to slightly over $1.5 million that includes loan principal repayments of $529,541. This year the Archdiocese agreed to restructure $587,338 in liabilities to subvention, or contingent liabilities. The subvention balance is subject to repayment only in the event the parish was to receive a sizable unrestricted donation, bequest or sale of property where the repayment would not compromise the ongoing financial operation of the Parish.
In addition to oversight of the parish, the Finance Council also reviews the activity reports from the following parish sponsored programs: CYO Basketball, Food Pantry, Respect Life and Rosary Altar Society. Their respective summary reports are also included in the bulletin this week. Your continued participation in these programs is greatly appreciated.
Finally, the Finance Council would like to thank all those who continue to so generously support your parish. We would also like to thank Fr. Quinn who tirelessly fights for the spiritual and financial well-being of the entire St. John’s community. Thank you. Eileen A. Podlovits CPA, Parish Accountant Bill Donohue, Chairman, Finance Council

St. John’s Food Pantry St. John’s Food Pantry is available each week to serve our parishioners and others who live in Putnam County in need of food. Over the past twelve months, we have helped feed 20,140 adults and children. The winter months (November through March) we see the heaviest demand, and on average, we serve 1856 clients. The St. John’s Food Pantry receives an annual Food Grant (HPNAP) from the Regional Food Bank of New York that helps defray the cost of running the food pantry. This year’s grant is $23,800. The food bank’s grant covers about 39% of the yearly cost of operating the pantry. The balance of funds, approximately $38,000, comes from contributions from individual parishioners, fundraisers, corporate and foundation donations, and through the direct support of St. John the Evangelist Parish. During the winter months as we approach Thanksgiving and Christmas, when our demand significantly increases, the need for donation of food and cash contributions also increases. The cash is needed to meet our weekly purchases of milk, bread, and other supplies which are not covered by our grant. We greatly appreciate the support of our parishioners for, without it, it would be impossible to continue this mission.
