Background Last Dynasty of China Fell 1912 The warlord Era
The land was divided up by different powerful individuals with their own armies
The formation of the Nationalist Chinese (KMT)

Established Communist Party of China (CPC)
CPC had 300 members in1922
KMT had 50,000 in 1923
The Northern Expedition
Chiang Kai-Sek was appointed the KMT’s leader in 1925
The first campaign began in 1926.
The objective was to unify China by ending rule to the
local war lords
The expedition ended in 1928 with the help of CPC, KMT
defeated the local warlords resulted in what is known as
the reunification of China
Shanghai Massacre April 7, 1927, KMT leaders held a meeting about communist
activities
Concluded with removing the communists from the party
On April 12th fighting broke out between CPC and KMT
Hundred of CPC members were arrested and executed
Resulting in a split between right and left wing KMT
3 capitals in China, Beijing (CPC), Wuhan (left wing), and Nanjing (right wing)
At the time, Right Wing Government KMT was the only legitimate government regarded by foreign powers
Second Sino-Japanese war
In 1937 Japan began a full scale invasion of China
China was in a chaotic state making it perfect for the
Japanese
The KMT did not join with CPC because it thought the
CPC was a threat
Beijing fell in 1937
The end of the war
KMT were defeated because of many reasons. The biggest
one was corruption. The CPC also told the poor peasants
that they could have the farmland of their former warlords
which made them very popular. To this day there has been
no peace treaty signed but there are tensions between
China and the Nationalist Party.
