    pre-registration BSc (Hons) Childrens Nursing

Keele University offers a Degree in Childrens Nursing beginning in September each year. Childrens nurses provide a wide range of care to children and young people in diverse settings. The role of the childrens nurse is demanding, including provision of complex and technically demanding care and high level decision making. The childrens nurse must practice in partnership with the child, young person and family which is driven by effective communication, negotiation and respect. Our programmes adopt an approach to learning and teaching that focuses on children and their families and encourages students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the safe delivery of effective childrens nursing care. Modules integrate theory and practice elements which contribute to admission to the Professional Register. Placements are undertaken within a range of settings. These will reflect the current care delivery and will include primary and community settings such as the childs home, schools, childrens centres, health centres and within the hospital such as, inpatient wards, theatre and accident and emergency. The development of clinical skills is an integral part of the programme and is supported in practice by mentors and in the excellent clinical skills laboratories by experienced lecturers. Student support is taken seriously with each student being allocated a personal tutor and having access to campus-based academic advice services. Learning and teaching is through a variety of strategies including lectures, seminars and tutorials. IT based exercises and presentations are also used to encourage work relevant skills. Assessment is undertaken through essay, examination and in practical laboratory and clinical situations.

Working in partnership with families; established placement circuit; excellent library and IT facilities; experienced student support.

  • Entry Requirements All candidates for Pre-Registration Nursing and Midwifery programmes are required to meet or exceed Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements, including literacy and numeracy skills. All candidates studying for qualifications covered by UCAS Tariff will be expected to meet a Tariff score of 200-240 (for 3 A-levels). A minimum tariff score of 180 points maybe offered for 2 A-levels, B/C minimum. The exact Tariff score you will be required to meet will be determined by your educational profile and your individual application.

Applicants qualifications that are not listed will be considered on an individual basis. Evidence of recent study within the last five years is desirable. International candidates who meet residency/academic requirements of UK students but whose first language is not English will need to hold IELTS with an overall score of 7. In addition, we prefer applicants to have gained some experience in care (e.g. work experience whilst at school/college, caring for family members or voluntary work). Applicants are advised not to submit a mixed application, but to focus on one branch of nursing. NB: The UCAS form caters for one nominated referee only. This should be the applicants most recent academic tutor (friends, relatives or neighbours cannot be nominated as referees). If the applicant can only secure an employment reference on the UCAS form we will ask for a second reference (academic) at the interview stage of application. Additional Requirements Candidates who are successful at the initial stage of selection will be required to satisfy Occupational Health and Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau clearances. Candidates who have concerns about any criminal convictions, cautions and/or reprimands, however dated they may be, are strongly advised to contact the School for guidance (01782 679600). All such information will be treated in confidence. The University follows the CRB Code of Practice in these issues (see www.crb.gov.uk) and can provide a copy of the Code on request. Please see the School of Nursing and Midwifery Admissions Policy on the, School website for details of entry conditions. Candidates must also provide evidence of minimum residency requirements and meet English language requirements (see main prospectus). Late applications from suitable candidates will be considered, where vacancies are available. We are unable to consider international candidates as we have no self-funding places.
