CURRENTLY READING... Mary’s Last Dance by Mary Li
True Story
Mary Li is an international ballet star
who became a household name
when her husband Li Cunxin
published one of the world’s most
beloved books ‘Mao’s Last Dance’ –
but that book only told half the story.
Now it’s time to hear from Mary. This
is a powerful and moving tale of a
mother’s love, of Mary sacrificing
her career for her daughter and the
various struggles that the family
have been through.
Growing up in in Rockhampton, Mary
discovered an extraordinary early
passion for ballet. It saw her move to
London at the age of 16 to study at
the Royal Ballet School. She then
went on to dance with the Houston
Ballet, where as principal dancer she
fell in love with the acclaimed dancer
Li Cunxin. The couple became the
darlings of the dance world, and
were happier than they could have
imagined at the arrival of their
firstborn daughter, Sophie.
Then right at the height of her
international career, Mary seemingly
disappeared from view. Now, almost
twenty years on, we learn what
unfolded next for this inspiring family.
This is a powerful and uplifting
memoir blending four worlds
together; ballet, finance, Western
and Chinese and the hearing and
deaf.
