(NU) - Parents need to be pre-pared for back-to-school seasonas 85 percent of all school dis-tricts report at least one outbreaka year. The Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention states thatmost of the 12 million cases oc-cur in preschool and elementary-school-aged children.

Fortunately, parents can nowhelp to prevent head lice usingnatural, safe and effective ingre-dients. A recent study by FairyTales Hair Care showed that rose-mary, citronella, tea tree andlavender oils were over 93 per-cent effective in preventing headlice. Daily use of shampoos andsprays help keep the fragrancefresh on the child’s hair and keeplice away.

In addition to natural prod-ucts, Fairy Tales recommends thefollowing tips:• Explain to your children tonever share hats, combs, pillows, ear buds or helmets. Keep longhair up in a pony tail or braid. • Lice like clean hair -- notdirty! Don’t shampoo every day,and use products to coat the hairshaft making it hard for a louse toattach to it. • Do weekly head checks. Situnder a bright light and combthrough tiny sections of the hair-- focusing on the “hot spots,”such as the back of neck, behindears and the part lines. Nits (eggs)will be grayish in color and glued¼ inch from the top of the hairshaft. If it is hard to remove, it isa nit and not dandruff.

• Lice-removal treatments arenow available that are more ef-fective and safer than traditionalover-the-counter products. En-zymes dissolve the “nit glue” soeggs/nits wash out easily and killlive bugs on contact. Enzymeswork on the new breed of “superlice” as well. Lice Good-Bye canbe used repeatedly, allowing par-ents to safely remove lice and getchildren back to school quicklyand lice free.
