Internal Entrepreneurship as a Vehicle for Strategic Growth: From “Skunkworks” to Execution

Strategy executives are increasingly charged with developing new markets and lines of business to drive growth and business model innovation. One way of achieving this – outside of traditional internal structures or avenues such as M&A – is creating internal innovation units that incubate and launch new initiatives adjacent to the core business. This process of innovating outside the core presents challenges and opportunities. This session reviews general best practices and case-based lessons learned from creating internal entrepreneurial initiatives within a large organization. Themes addressed include s t r u c t u r e , i n c e n t i ve s , c h a n g e m a n a g e m e n t , culture,product/business development, the role of talent, and data-driven decision-making.

In today’s digital world, interconnectedness is the new standard for designing and creating products, services and business models. Consumers expect higher levels of adaptation, personalization and engagement.

In this role, he has been a key player in the development of national, multi-national, regional, and organizational strategies. A graduate of the Air War College and Fellow of the Strategic Planning Society, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Strategic Management Forum (Global) and as an advisor to the Global Futures Forum.

Re-thinking Thinking About Strategy

Has planning overtaken strategy? Has an increasing focus on functional strategies taken the focus off holistic or “grand” strategy? Are we creating strategies in reaction to market and global conditions instead of focusing on strategies to create the conditions themselves? Has agility become a specialization rather than an integral part of strategy? Has complexity become an obstacle to thought? In a hyper-connected, fast-paced, world the need for holistic or “grand” strategies and the ability to integrate functional issues into them may be more important than ever before.

Edward Regula Chief Strategy Officer US Federal Government

Kristin Bertelli Chief, Workforce Strategy CIA

Kristin Bertelli currently serves as the Chief, Workforce Strategy and Planning, Central Intelligence Agency and most recently managed Intelligence Community (IC) strategic workforce planning efforts while serving within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). Prior to joining federal service, Kristin spent 18 years working for ANSER Inc., a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to supplying federal, state and local government officials with objective, timely and forward-thinking analysis.

Strategic Workforce Planning in the Intelligence Community and at CIA

There is no doubt that the success of the US Intelligence Community (IC) in helping preserve the nation’s security depends above all on the dedicated members of the IC workforce. In the past decade, the IC has embraced the powerful critiques of the 9/11 and WMD Commissions, now framed by statute in the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. This talk will discuss how the IC has transformed through changes in the way it acquires, develops, manages, and deploys talent. These practices were designed to bring more coherence and cohesion to the 17 elements so that the IC realizes its full potential as a Community.

Strategy in a Straitjacket

The wake of the global financial crisis has inspired a significant increase in local regulations on Financial Institutions (FI) in every corner of the globe. These well intended regulations often constrain FI’s ability to design and deploy creative payment solutions that address our customers rapidly evolving international commerce needs. Simultaneously, Fintech has never been hotter as billions of dollars are flowing in nimble and often under-regulated start-ups that aspire to provide alternatives to traditional banking products. How can large FI’s innovate to solve tomorrow’s customer challenges in an unlevel regulatory environment?

Augmenting Human Intel l igence to Capture the Whole Story

Company communications don’t sit within a vacuum; they are part of a complex network of evolving stories, perspectives and opinions. Especially in our modern world, it’s necessary to have a deep understanding of online conversations for effective messaging and branding. Simply counting tweets, or scoring overall sentiment, isn't enough to understand a complicated issue. In this session, we’ll explain how data visualization, powered by advanced algorithms, can reveal hidden patterns in rich textual information, empowering you to explore complex questions about people, culture, and brands. By augmenting your intelligence, technology speeds human understanding, and helps elevate your company's strategic communications.
