CHEMISTRY at COLBY COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Science of Chemistry
Science is a way of knowing about the world. It includes making
observations, developing hypotheses, testing the hypotheses in controlled
experiments, and drawing conclusions from data.
Chemistry, a branch of physical science, is the study of the
composition, structure, properties and change of matter.
Are You Ready To...?
• Write lab reports• Create chemical reactions in the lab• Use lab tests to identify unknown compounds• Take math, physics, and biology
as well as chemistry
Course Spotlight
In biochemistry, you’ll look at the chemical basis for life and study organisms at the molecular level.
You’ll explore the chemical processes that allow an organism to grow, repair damage, and reproduce. Subjects you
may cover include enzymes, which speed up the chemical processes in an organism, as well as Deoxyribonucleic
Acid.

Organic Chemistry
Three hours of lecture and three hours of laboratory per week are included. This course is a presentation of the reactions of aliphatic and aromatic compounds. Emphasis is placed on
basic techniques for the preparation, separation, and purification of organic
compounds, as well as modern spectroscopy, mechanisms of reactions
and bonding in organic compounds.
General Biochemistry
This course covers organic nomenclature , proteins ,carbohydrate
and lipid chemistry. Also included are the
general characteristics and actions of
enzymes, vitamins, hormones basic metabolism and
