Introduction:CHE414isaone(1)creditlaboratory. The prerequisiteforthiscourseisCHE413. CHE414isdesignedtoexposestudentstothe basictechniques,principles,andinstrumentation associated with modern chromatographic, electrochemical andspectroscopictechniques. Tenexperiments andoneexercisewillbeperformed.Gradeswillbeassignedbasedonthecriterialistedbelow.

Akeyobjectiveofthislaboratoryisthepreparationofconcise,qualitylaboratory reports.LaboratoryReportvolumeandmassarenotgradingcriteria. Reportcontent iscritical. AlaboratorynotebookandreportpreparationguidewillaidyouinyourLaboratoryReportpreparation.EachReportisduetotheTAatthestartofthenextlaboratorysessionfollowingtheassigneddateforyourexperiment.

LabReportSubmission:All laboratoryReportsmustbe typewritten (12pt font,singlespaced,singlesided,1"margins).Reportssubmittedafterduedatewilllose25pointsforonelabperiod,and50pointsaftertwolabperiods.Reportswillnotbeacceptedafterthesecondlabsessionfollowingtheduedateandwillbescoredazero(0)unlessapprovedinadvancebytheInstructor(inwriting).Labreportsaredueasahardcopyatthestartofeachlab.

Grading: Each LaboratoryReports isworth 100 points. Reportsmust be typewritten (seeabove)inyourownwords.InstructionsarepostedontheUBLearnswebsitedetailingthelayoutofthelaboratoryreports.Reportsfollowthebasicoutline:

Introduction(5pts.): Objectiveofexperiment/exercise.TheorySection(10pts.): Detailedbackgroundofthetechnique.ExperimentalSection(15pts.): Outlinetheprocedures,equipment,andreagentsused. Aschematicsketchofthebasicinstrumentandadiscussionofitsoperationalprinciplesaremandatory.Data and Calculations (20 pts.): Present data in tabular and/or graphical format asrequiredandprovideasamplecalculation. ResultsandDiscussion(15pts.): Reportunknownconcentrationvaluesorchemicaldataifapplicable. Summary/Conclusions(5pts.):Commentontheutilityofaparticularmethodandon theexperiment. Questions(30pts.):Answerallquestions(inorder)posedinthelaboratorywrite-up.LabNotebook(100pts.):Studentsmustmaintainadedicated,neatandboundlaboratorynotebookthatisorganizedbyexperiment. TheInstructorwillgradethenotebookatseveraltimesthroughoutthe course. Inkmustbeused,noerasures,etc.areacceptednortolerated.Allwritten notesandcalculationmustbereportedinthenotebookdirectly. Studentswhohavea tendencytowriteonscrappaperwillbedowngradedseverely. Failuretomaintainanaccurate,detailed,up-to-datenotebookwillresultinalowgrade.TOTALGrade:LabNotebook(100pts.)+LaboratoryReports(11@100pts)=1200points.Grades are assigned according to the Explanation of Grades document contained in theUndergraduateDegreeandCourseCatalog.LaboratorySafetyAwarenessTest:Thistestisgivenduringthefirstlaboratoryperiod.Studentsmissingmorethan2questionsarerequiredtorepeatthetestuntilapassinggradeis achieved. No allowance for missed laboratorywork will be provided. To prepare,studentswillbegivenasafetytalkduringthecheck-inlaboratoryperiod.Specificsafetyconcernsapplicabletoeachlaboratoryarenotedinthelaboratoryandintroduction.LaboratoryCleanUpandHygiene: Studentsare responsible forcleaningupaftereveryexperiment. Astudentwillbegiven awarningthefirsttimeiftheyfailtoproperlycleanupaftertheirexperimentandwillbe givenexplicitinstructionsonhowtoproperlycleanup. Ifastudentfailstocleanupafterthemselvesasecondtime,theircoursegradewillbedecreasedbyonefulllettergrade.Department of Chemistry Instrument Laboratory: Several experiments make use ofsophisticatedequipmentlocatedinthesharedinstrumentationcenteroftheDepartmentofChemistry.ThesearesharedresourcesandstudentsMUSTtreattheseexpensiveresourceswith the appropriate care. When using these instruments, you will be under the directsupervisionofateachingassistant.Failuretofollowinstructions,willfulnegligence,willbedealtwithseverely,uptoandincludingdismissalfromthecourse.DataTransferandSecurity:Instrumentationusedinthiscourseiscomputer-based,andthedataproducedwilloftenbeprovidedtotheStudentsinadigitalformat.TheTAswillassiststudentsmovingdatatoonlineaccounts(UBBoxorUBLearns)viaspecialUSBdrives. Inorder to prevent virus infection: No Student may use a personal USB with instrumentcomputers.

AcademicIntegrity:TheUniversitycommunitydependsuponsharedacademicstandards.Academic dishonesty in any form represents a fundamental impairment of thesestandards. If, after consultationwith the student, an instructor believes the studenthascommittedanactofacademicdishonesty,theinstructorhastheauthoritytoimposesanctionsinkeepingwiththisprinciple. TheMINIMUMsanctionstobeimposedinchemistryareasfollows:Firstinfraction:Themaximumpointvaluefortheassignmentwillbesubtractedfromthe student's point total. ArrangementsmustbemadewellinadvancebycontactingtheDirectorofAccessibilityResources,25CapenHallandDr.Ray.LaboratoryManual:ALaboratoryManualisrequiredforthiscourse. Themanualwillbemadeavailable to all students forFREE. It is availableviaUBLearns asaPDFdownload.Studentsmustreadtheexperimentswellinadvanceofthe laboratoryperiodandbereadytoworkimmediatelyonarrivingtothelaboratory.Itisstronglysuggestedthatyouprepareanexperimentaloutlineinyourlabbook, withnotes,andlistsoftablesandgraphsneededBEFOREYOUCOMETOLAB.LaboratoryVideos:Shortvideosintroducingtheinstrumentationusedineachexperimentare posted on the UB Learns website. The videos discuss only aspects of the specificinstrumentationusedintheexperiments,andareNOTasubstituteforreadingthelaboratorymanual.StudentsshouldviewthesevideosBEFORElaboratory!LaboratorySchedule:Arotationschedulewillbeestablishedduringthefirstweekofclass.The experimental portion of each lab is designed to be performedduringone lab period.Consequently,each studentmustbepreparedtobeginexperimentsimmediatelyonarrivinginthelaboratory. DuringthefirstfewweeksofclassallstudentswillmeetwiththeInstructorandtheTAasoutlinedbelowforanorganizationandoverviewlecture. Thepurposeofthesemeetings is to familiarize the students with the experiments, explain the Instructor’sexpectations, and highlight the principles behind and goals for each experiment. It isimperativethatstudentshaveandbringtheirLaboratoryManualswiththem tothesefirstmeetings.Make-upPolicy:Therearenoexcusedabsencesfromthefirstthreeexperiments.Studentsmay not be excused for more than one group work experiment. Students who areunavoidablyabsentfromanyexperimentmustsubmitawrittenrequestforanexcusedabsencetoobtainanymissedin-laboratorycredit.
