EXAM DATES/TIMES

Sections 1 & 1SA (class meets MWF 10 am): Friday 8-11 am

Section 2 (class meets MWF 11 am): Wednesday 11:30 am-2:30 pm

The scientific method

Unit conversions

Atomic structure and nuclear reactions

Types of electromagnetic radiation: relative ranking with respect to energy, , and , as well as understanding how they

interact with matter.

Relationships between , and energy for light (any needed constants (c, h) will be given)

Periodic trends with respect to:

• ionization energy

• electron affinity

• electronegativity

• size

• ionic charges

• electron configuration

Lewis dot/VSEPR shapes (including formal charge, hybridization, resonance, and bond types (vs))

Nomenclature/writing formulas for acids, ionic and molecular compounds, hydrates, and polyatomic ions

Stoichiometry, including moles, molarity, limiting reagent, and Avogadro’s number

Percent composition and empirical formulas

Predicting products/balancing equations, including:

• acid/base, metathesis, decomposition, synthesis, single replacement, and hydrocarbon combustion rxns

• REDOX equations!!!!! (with half reactions), also determining if a reaction is a redox reaction or not

• the activity series for metals and halogens

Determine net ionic equations (thus, know your solubility rules)

Three methods to determine ∆H (Hess’s Law, calorimetry, bond dissociation energies)

Heat of formation reactions

Predicting types of intermolecular forces for a compound (3 types) and predicting if a compound is polar

Gas laws (as many as we can cover) and gas stoichiometry
