We are faced with the options of growing not only outwards but upwards. To do this effectively, CB understands that it must invest in people while adopting state of the art technologies. It is not ‘either or’, it’s both. The integrity of the food chain must be kept at all costs if we are to enhance our reputation in producing safe, wholesome, nutritious and tasty foods. It begins with the sourcing of inputs of the highest quality on the one hand and ends with the disposal of waste products in a responsible manner.

To highlight the technology story, we have invested in creating a leading feed mill by using the best broilers, layers and pigs, as well as adopting innovations in ‘grow-out and breeding’, which run ahead of all the rest. There is no end to the adaptation of new technologies as we move up the processing ladder in response to the wants and needs of the population.

All this exercise in quality and standards has propelled us into a position of international competiveness. As a consequence, we must look beyond the bounds of ‘little Jamaica’ to the wider world. We must embrace teamwork and as we ‘sail out to sea’ we must understand fully that the job in ‘our small corner’ is important to the whole organization.

CARIBBEAN PASSION LAUNCHES ROTISSERIE LINE

Faced with busy schedules and long, stressful days, working professionals have little time or energy to cook when they finally make it back home. That’s why CB’s re-launched Rotisserie products are perfect for persons looking for quick and easy to prepare meals.

Caribbean Passion fans can now enjoy tasty chicken, succulent pork and gourmet sausages from the brand’s new Rotisserie line. It’s little wonder that these savoury meals, including Jerk Pork, Hot and Spicy Chicken and Chorizo Sausage, are already a big hit with consumers.

Customers can now pick up Rotisserie products at supermarkets in Kingston, Mandeville, May Pen and Ocho Rios but CB has plans well underway to expand to Montego Bay, Sav-La-Mar and Rubis Gas Stations islandwide.

Caribbean Passion fans can look out for new Rotisserie flavours to hit the market in early 2015.

With Breast Cancer Awareness Month celebrated in October, Newport Mills decided to partner with the Jamaica Cancer Society (JCS) to increase awareness about the disease and raise funds for the non-profit organization.

Throughout the month, Newport Mills employees and customers sported pink ribbons, purchased JCS plastic and metal pins, and contributed money toward the collection drive.

On Friday, October 10, Newport Mills decided to host their own ‘pink day’, where team members donned various shades of pink: from light pastel looks to fiery hot tones, all to show their support for persons afflicted with this dreadful disease. Check out photo highlights of the Newport Mills staff as they show off their ‘true colours’, looking quite cute and cuddly in their pink clothing!

Bad Dawg has always been a huge supporter of entrepreneurship since the brand’s business model is built on encouraging persons to go out and set up their own companies. For us, Small and Medium Entities (SMEs) are the future: an important source for creating jobs and helping out the wider economy.

So when our friends at UWI’s Entrepreneur Builder club invited Bad Dawg Brand Manager, Alicia Bogues, to come and speak at one of their meetings, we immediately jumped at the chance to share our Bigga, Betta, Badda business experience.

On Thursday, October 16, eager undergrads packed lecture room SR 10 to listen to our presentation about getting started in business and the ‘sticktuitiveness’ needed to excel in any field. The highly interactive talk gave students the chance to ask plenty of questions and make comments during the lively discussion. The group had such a great time that Bad Dawg has since been invited back to UWI to engage the Rotaract Club, and sell at various on-campus locations, including ABC Hall and Rex Nettleford Hall.

On Friday, October 10, Smart Eggs celebrated World Egg Day with a fun social media contest! The competition asked fans to solve 3 word scrambles and complete a phrase at the end of the day.

Persons who answered correctly on our Facebook, Instagram & Twitter pages were able to win some great prizes. Five winners of the word scrambles: Debra Taylor, Sandor Panton, Donna Dacosta, Angela Leach and Janet Johnson took home Smart Eggs branded mugs, water bottles and t-shirts.

But it was Shelly Larmond who eventually made off with the Grand Prize after she successfully completed the phrase. Her big win copped a visit from the Smart Cart to her office, a gift bag with a t-shirt, a water bottle, mug & gift certificate to our partner, Fromage Gourmet Market.

CB Ready For Race Day

It’s time once again to abandon the work suits and uniforms, grab your best pair of sneakers, a water bottle and of course, your CB team shirt for the CB Group UWI 5K and Smart Eggs Kids K, taking place on Sunday, November 16 at UWI Bowl. Months of eating healthy, exercising regularly and training hard have finally come down to this as the stage is set for us to show off our perfect running form while still supporting an incredible cause.

We all know Jamaica is battling an upward trend in hypertension and diabetes – all diseases influenced by poor diet and exercise regimes. We believe this event is truly important not only because it supports our future through education, but it also promotes a healthy, active lifestyle for youth and the Jamaican family.

Over the past few years, we’ve partnered up with UWI to boost the development of sports and education in Jamaica. And our efforts have paid off BIG time with 6,000 participants, JMD $28 million and 40 scholarships already under our belt.

This year, we’re ready to do even more as we’ve set our sights on signing up an additional 6,000 competitors and raising an extra JMD $15 million. The more money we collect, the more scholarships we can give out and more students can get a college education and pursue their passion in sports.

So whether you plan to walk, run, hand out breakfast or simply watch from the

side-lines, we are excited to see the entire CB Group out in full force. There’s no

doubt we’ll all be seeing red come race day as the CB fam floods the UWI campus.

Copperwood walked away with top honours at the Bureau of Standards recent National Quality Awards, which recognizes local companies for their commitment to production processes and international quality standards. The Lucea-based organization collected two Sectional Awards in Small/Medium Enterprises for Excellence in both Customer Focus and Human Resource Focus. But the big win came when Copperwood was handed the Overall National Quality Award for Excellence in the Small Business Sector.

Copperwood Farms has worked hard to raise its operations to the highest level of global standards in international quality management and food safety. Today, the ISO 9001:2008, HACCP and GMP certified facility is an industry leading pork producer, confidently lifting the bar for success within the local agricultural sector.

“We are excited, proud, yet humbled to be recognised and certainly this proves to be an added motivation for us to stay the course,” says Michael Gibbs, plant manager for Copperwood Farms.

Arnold Road GoesOn The Run

CB’s Arnold Road Processing Plant came alive recently as employees flexed their athletic muscles during the location’s first ever Percival Sprint Off. Staff members eagerly gathered on Percival Avenue, just alongside the facility, to watch their co-workers in action and to see first-hand who would come out on top for the much anticipated races.

After some tense, nail biting moments, the Sanitation Department’s Rayon Palmer narrowly won the Men’s 60M event while Production Worker Yanique Algernon secured a big win in the Women’s 60M dash. With quick yet careful movements all the way from the start to the finish line, Production’s Carlene Cruickshank claimed the number 1 spot in the Women’s Egg and Spoon race. Each winner received a medal and was recognized for their achievement during a brief award ceremony.

This event is the first of many HR plans to host in order to encourage some fun competition at the plant. Organizers are hoping to sign up more participants and include additional contests for the next Sprint Off.

Congrats are in order for Colin Kerr, who is now an ACCA qualified accountant. Colin’s journey was hardly easy: 8 years invested, 14 exams, and 3 years of accounting work and practical experience, all while learning to balance his family, work and school life is a testament to his determination. Please join us in celebrating Colin’s great accomplishment. Job well done!

On Sunday, September 12, Cerica Montgomery, CB’s Sales Accounting Supervisor, gave birth to her adorable son, Cardis Montgomery, who came in weighing at 7 pounds, 1 ounce.

On Saturday, September 20, Stanford Hamilton, Senior Livestock Attendant at Newport Genetics, and Tiffany Hinds, celebrated the birth of their beautiful daughter, Sanoya Hamilton.

5. What gets you through a hectic work day?

My favourite CB product is Rotisserie Jerk.

6. What is your favourite CB product?

I would love to be a part of the Customer Service Department because it would give me a first-hand view of how our customers really feel about our products and services.

7. If you could be in another section of the group for a day, where would you go and why?

My most embarrassing moment at work happened when I fell down a flight of steps, all the way from the top to the bottom, while leaving my supervisor’s office. Thankfully, the humiliating experience wasn’t in vain as we installed a hand rail shortly thereafter.

8. What has been your most embarassing moment at work?

My favourite dish is boneless, curry chicken thigh in coconut milk served with white rice.

9. Name your favourite chicken/pork dish.

I get into work between 6:10 a.m. and 6:20 a.m. I start off my day by making a cup of coffee, looking at our production schedule and checking the scale house to see what our weights are. I then consult with my supervisors on the best approach for getting our orders done within schedule. Following that discussion, I check with the field department to find out if catching is going well and if bird quantity remains the same. Throughout the day, I monitor our production to confirm targets are met and if necessary, prioritize our activities to suit our customers’ needs. To ensure our operations are moving smoothing, I liaise with a number of departments, including shipping, stores, maintenance and purchasing. Close to the end of production, I verify all orders have been processed and completed.

4. Describe a typical day for you from the moment you arrive at work till when you leave.

I have been working with the CB Group for over sixteen years.

I am the Plant Superintendent at the Arnold Road Processing Plant.

I enjoy working at CB because it is a true family business, both in its origin and the way the company treats its staff. You can’t pass through CB’s offices, factories, or farms, and not be infected by the warmth and closeness shared amongst team members. One just has to look at our Arnold Road production facility, where employees eagerly buy CB branded shirts because they are proud to be a part of this caring organization.

As the countdown begins for this year’s CB Group UWI 5K & Smart Eggs Kids K on Sunday, November 16, many of our team members have already signed up for the big race. As we all get together to raise funds for a great cause, we also need to make sure all participants experience a fun and safe run. Whether you’re a first timer or a seasoned expert, we can all use some helpful tips, and for our pros, some useful reminders, about enjoying a successful race.

• Do not load up on carbs the day before the event as this can negatively affect your race. Stick to your usual portions and stock up on healthy food.

• Drink lots of water about an hour before running and stay hydrated throughout the day.

• Warm up at least 20 minutes ahead of the race.

• Though excited at the beginning of your run, save your energy to complete the entire distance.

• Watch your step! Look out for other runners, changes in the road surface and objects lying in the street.

• Don’t ignore sharp pains. If they don’t go away and you find yourself changing your stride, stop running and rest.

• Finish up your race with a quick sprint.

• After you’ve passed through the finish line, don’t stop suddenly but continue walking for another five minutes to help gradually lower your heart rate.

1. The word Chikungunya means ‘that which bends’, a term that came from the Kimakonde language of the Makonde tribe in Africa. 2. The virus was first discovered in Tanzania in 1952. 3. Chikungunya was first identified in the Caribbean in 2013 and has since spread quickly throughout the region. 4. ChikV, as it is commonly called in Jamaica, is transmitted when a person is bitten by an infected, female mosquito. 5. The two species of mosquitoes that spread Chikungunya bite during daylight hours, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon. 6. Symptoms of the virus include fever, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, nausea, fatigue, joint swelling and rash.

7. Most patients experience symptoms for 2–12 days, but some people can experience them for weeks, months or even years. 8. There is no cure for ChikV but medications such as Panadol and Cetamol can help to relieve symptoms. 9. Getting plenty of rest, drinking lots of fluids and doing some light exercise can also reduce symptoms. 10. To avoid getting Chikungunya, use repellents that contain DEET, sleep under a mosquito net and get rid of any standing water in or around your home.
