Topic: What career will you pursue and why?
Whether we are young or old, at every moment we have significant homework. After
graduating from high school, deciding universities is our stressful task to solve and after
graduating from university new problems emerge: Choosing our careers.
To prepare for my future, I ponder my career. I entertained ideas of becoming a doctor,
a lawyer, a businesswoman and a journalist. However, I realized a job that made me happy and
helped to satisfy me is a professor. Throughout my high school career, I have experienced
working as a teacher aide and I have taught children in the orphanage. Having these work
experiences has given me the feeling of a real work environment with students and I am now
beginning to see what I need to do in order to be a superior teacher. Furthermore, I have
developed a compassionate approach and commitment to teach students. Thus, I shall pursue
this path to become a superior professor.

Dear Ms.Julia,
My name is JuHee Kim and I am a senior student in Jakarta International School. I am very
interested in the Education program at the University of Stanford. I want to apply the University
of Stanford because I am impressed with a great credibility, responsible and ethical leaders that
shape and mold students. Thus, the Education Department of Stanford University would be the
best of all for me in order to cover what I want to learn and study. However, while researching
about the university, I faced a problem, so I am writing this letter to ask the questions.
Throughout my high school career, I took IB Math, IB English, AP Psychology, IB Business,
journalism, Wind Ensemble (band) and other regular subjects. Furthermore, I have experienced
working as a teacher aide. The reason I am taking teacher aide is because I believe I can
develop a compassionate approach and commitment to teach students in a future time. Not only
did I work with various teachers but also I taught children in a variety of clubs at school. Every
two weeks, I went to a Kampung (a village where poor people live) or orphanage to teach
English and play games with young children. Having these work experiences has given me the
feeling of a real work environment with students. Could these experiences be an advantage
when I study in the introductory course? If so, I am pleased to take this course.
I found that the SAT score should be 2010; Critical Reading 660, Math 680 and Writing 670. Is
this a minimum score that students should get? I am planning to take SAT II Korean and Math.
Could these scores help me in order to enter the university?
Thank you for your consideration and I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours Sincerely,
김주희

Mom! I Decided To Open My Future Gate
By JuHee Kim
What is your dream? Graduating from
high school? Touring around the world?
Attending a top university? As a
student, deciding a university may be
one of the most stressful problems.
When I was a high school student, I
was puzzled about which university I
should go to. My parents advised me to
go university in Korea because that is
my home country. But my opinion was
different from my parents. I wanted to
have an experience in another country
with different people. Although there
are 387 universities in Korea, a
question always stayed in my mind during my senior life: Should I attend a university in my
own country or in another country?
As international students, we have been taught in an international curriculum and so, we wish to
continue to study in English with a similar education style. I know one of my friends who were
studying at JIS and go university in Japan envies my educational opportunity. She tells me that
she cannot make foreign friends anymore. She pines for her high school memories, when she
too was at an international school; she played with a variety of nationalities friends.
Studying abroad can be an eye-opening adventure where learning extends to the world beyond
the classroom walls. When we enroll in a foreign university, we will face problems because of a
different culture, but truly we will absorb many interesting features and we will gain in-depth
knowledge which our own country does not offer. So, what are the advantages of leaving a
homeland to enter a university abroad? First of all, you will grow and learn while you are
abroad, adjusting to living in a new culture. While studying abroad you will experience new
JuHee
customs, foods, languages, and much more. This experience will give you a new perspective of
people in other countries, people in your own country, and yourself. For instance, you will gain
new perspectives on your chosen field of study and make many new friends. One of my
Chinese friends, who studies in Canada tells me “I decided to study abroad because I wanted to
get better education and improve my English speaking skills.” Despite the differences between
China and Canada’s cultures, she says she can make friends easier than in China because
Canadians are friendlier. Not only does Melody articulate that foreign university is “opening
door to another world”, Rama Noezwar, a 22-year-old, male ex JIS male student who enrolled
at the University of Waterloo, says “It is the best place and the best time to have freedom and
start fresh”. Nevertheless, they are living in unfamiliar places with new people; both of them
agree that challenging themselves helps them to approach next step to become adults.
According to a survey from International Education Student (IES), student’s personal,
professional, and academic life shows that study abroad positively and unequivocally influences
students’ career paths, world-views, and self-confidence. Regardless of where students studied
and for how long, the data from more than 3,400 respondents shows that study abroad is usually
a defining moment in a young person's life. Furthermore, this survey points out that it continues
to impact the participant’s life for years after the experience. Findings also illustrate that
studying abroad leads to long-lasting friendships with other U.S. students and still impacts
current relationships. According to the survey, more than half of the respondents are still in
contact with U.S. friends, and 73 percent said the experience continues to influence the
decisions they make in their family life. Alexa Sand (IES Milan), who is still very close to U.S.
friends she met abroad ten years ago, explains, “I think the shared experience of living fully
immersed in another culture made these friendships particularly poignant and enduring.”
Having been troubled to select a university, I made my mind to attend Stanford University. The
reasons for the verdict are that I was willing to deepen my knowledge and understanding of
international, political, and economic issues. Even though I regularly used to be filled with
nostalgia for my family and old friends, I never felt that I was wrong to depart from my home
country because my life in the United States is amusing.
This is just my opinion of studying abroad, so you don’t have to feel that you should study
abroad. Since I have never been present in my country’s university, I cannot provide you an
exact solution for this question. This is only one personal advice for you: please don’t be
worried about studying in your own country’s university because many of my friends, who
study in Korea, they send me messages that their university’s lives are fantastic! Your decision
should never dissatisfy you! Believe in yourself and open your mind! Your decision will help to
open your next door!

Dear Mr. WonHo Choi,
I am writing this letter to apply for a teaching position that I saw advertised on the internet.
As requested, I am enclosing a completed job application, my certification, my resume and
references. I know that the Daewon high school is looking for hard workers, who want to
help students to succeed in their future, and I believe that is exactly what I am. I believe, for
me, Daewon is the perfect school to teach students.
I would like to develop my teaching skills, while creating a challenging and fun learning
environment for students. I am very qualified and would be an asset to the school because of
my experience working as a teacher. I found my internship experience, at the University of
Stanford, a rewarding and fulfilling one. In addition, throughout my high school career, I
experienced working as a teacher aide at Jakarta International School. I worked patiently with
teacher. I enjoy tutoring students and helping them build confidence in their abilities to
achieve, both academically and socially. Having such a valuable experience has allowed me
to learn how teachers manage and teach students with varying abilities. Not only did I work
with many teachers but also I taught children in a variety of clubs at school. During my
university life, I went to elementary school to teach students every summer in an internship
program. Having these work experiences has given me the feeling of a real work environment
with students. I am now ready to see what I need to be a superior teacher.
Through my experiences at high school and university, I have developed a compassionate
approach and commitment to teach students. I would enjoy becoming a teacher at Daewon
high school. I hope my curriculum vitae shows that I have the skills and potential to join the
teaching profession. Thank you for considering my application. I would appreciate the
opportunity to meet with you in an interview and I look forward to hearing from you in the
near future.
