Basic Social Media Talking Points
● Remember that anything online is there forever. Anything negative associated with your name could keep you from getting into college or even from getting a job in the future. Help your child pick a username you’ll always be comfortable with.
● Your child shouldn't tweet anything they wouldn’t say in person or to someone's face. Keep bad language and gossip out of your tweets.
● Your child should only follow people they know in real life and similarly, when it comes to their own followers, they shouldn't let anyone follow them who they don't know outside of the web.
● Your child should avoid tweeting their name, address or phone number.
● Only you and your child should know their password.
● Make sure your child knows not to click on any link promising a quick way to get rich, a free prize or anything else that looks too good to be true.
--Talk with your kids
--Educate yourself (you are here!)
--Use Parental Controls
--Friend, follow, don’t stalk
--Set ground rules and apply sanctions
--Consider sharing an account
--Be a good digital role model

Snapchat
Top 5 Questions about Snapchat from Parents
- Why do kids love Snapchat?Kids love Snapchat because they love talking to their friends. Snapchat is a spontaneous and creative way to communicate with unique features that are just plain fun—Snapchatters can send images and short videos called “Snaps” that can be drawn on or modified with tools like Filters, Stickers and Lenses. Snapchat is playful and “in the moment,” a refreshing change from the world of social media, where you often become the sum of everything you’ve shared.
- What’s the appeal of having your messages disappear in seconds?Snapchat’s ephemerality mirrors “real life” conversations. When you go to lunch with a friend, the conversation doesn’t last beyond the meal — and Snapchat has managed to recreate that light, low-pressure feeling. Because Snaps aren’t on display anywhere forever, there isn’t the reputation anxiety or image-curation fatigue people feel in other services.
- Does Snapchat have a minimum age?Yes, the minimum age is 13, in compliance with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Snapchat ask for a date of birth upon sign up, and if the birth date indicates that the user is under 13, they’re not allowed to create an account.
- What are the risks in using Snapchat? Some adults worry that Snapchat’s ephemeral nature will encourage people to Snap without worrying about the consequences, but most people don’t use Snapchat that way. They use it because it’s a fun, visual way to communicate that lets them be silly without worrying about what comes next. However, as with all digital media, there are risks in broadcasting personal information like location to strangers and to posting content that violates Snapchat’s Community Guidelines. And users should know that there are ways for others to capture virtually any digital content, including “disappearing” images and video on Snapchat.
- What’s the best way to help kids stay safe on Snapchat?A positive experience on Snapchat ultimately depends on how it is used. It is important to talk to kids about being thoughtful while using social media. Remind your kids that they should speak to a trusted adult when they see something that concerns them and to avoid meeting up with strangers, even if they have an online friendship with them. Parents should also make sure their kids’ privacy settings are set to “My Friends” only.
Finsta (Fake Instagram)
● Privacy online is non-existent. Don’t post anything on a closed Finsta account you would not want to see in the public feed.
● Real consequences remain. While it’s tempting to rant on Finsta about classes, friends, and teachers, or boast about partying or drug use, remember you are always one screenshot away from serious consequences.
● Getting into the practice of being your true self online is wonderful — however, not everything should be shared. Use modesty, good judgment, and keep private details private. Finsta is not a personal diary. Even using a fake name, it’s clear who Finsta accounts belong to. For that reason, it’s critical to think before you share. A truthful expression isn’t always a safe expression. Responsibility is still required.
● Even good friends can turn. Friends today may not be your friends tomorrow. For that reason, your circle of Finsta friends may use any risky content against you. Share responsibly.
Family Talking Points on Finsta Accounts
● Report Finsta trolls. Some kids create Finsta accounts with fake names and photos only to reek havoc, gossip, and bully other users. If your child has a Finsta, encourage them to rat out the bullies and trolls by reporting abusive Finsta accounts.
● Kindness is still the goal. Just because an account is private and encourages honesty does not give anyone permission for bullying, name-calling, gossip, and shaming. Kindness still rules every social interaction, no matter what the platform or account persona.
● Show empathy always. When you mix honesty, technology, and impulsive posting, words and emotions can become reckless. The same rules apply to Finsta: Don’t bully and step in if you see anyone else being bullied. Express the same diligence, responsibility, and empathy you would on a public account. Remember: Integrity is what you do when no one else is looking.
