Celebrate RecoveryThousands of people within our city struggle with addiction and with compulsive and co-dependent behavior. Regardless of the form, whether its alcohol and drug abuse, eating disorders, negative self-talk or many others, all too often the road of addiction ends i n destructive and life-destroying behaviors that leave families in its wake.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we trust in a God who longs to help people sing, “My chains are gone, I’ve been set free.” We are called to be instruments of healing and liberation right here in our community. Therefore, we are excited to announce that we are partnering with churches throughout our area to participate in North Knoxville Celebrate Recovery.

Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered approach to helping people overcome hurts, hangups and habits that are ruining their lives and the lives of their families. Examples of the patterns that Celebrate Recovery can help people through include but are not limited to alcohol and drug dependency, pornography, low self-esteem, depression, anger, fear or rejection, and perfectionism.

Celebrate Recovery will meet at the Old Smithwood School at 3203 Tazewell Pike Tuesday nights at 6:00 p.m., beginning August 5. We hope that you will make a commitment to being a part of God’s movement to help people get their lives back by breaking free of the things that bind them. For more information or to participate in Celebrate Recovery, visit northknoxcr.org or call Randy Frye at 689-5175.

The Stories That Shape UsInevitably, our lives are shaped by stories. Few shows are more talked about every week online and around the water cooler than Downton Abbey, House of Cards and the Walking Dead. One of the most popular movie franchises that keeps our attention is the journey of Katniss Everdeen through the Hunger Games. And there are few books that have reached more youth and young adults than John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars. The big story that determines the course of our lives is, of course, the story that God is writing in us and in the world as revealed in the Bible. During the month of August in The Journey, we’ll be wrestling with how the Gospel interacts with these popular stories that continue to attract our attention and that we can’t help but keep talking about.

Your Witness: Faith SharingHow did you come to experience faith in a real way? FCUMC members have been sharing their faith stories through videos in The Journey. Watch the stories on FCUMC’s Facebook page.

Pastor Cornered

For three months this spring and summer we took time to reflect upon the three imperatives found in the Easter story: “Fear Not!” “Come and See!” “Go and Tell!” Those words give us a portrait of Jesus’ expectations as well as our mandate as a church. Now that August has arrived and we will soon be entering into our fall programs and studies, I hope you will keep those imperatives in mind.

Don’t be afraid of commitment. Yes, making commitments of our time, our energies and our resources do impact our schedules and force us to consider what is really important in my life. Nevertheless, I hope we will not be afraid of making ourselves available to God’s purposes, of exploring what new things God wants to accomplish in our lives as the church or as individuals, or taking a step of faith that we have never taken before.

Come and see what we have to offer in ways of spiritual formation. Make worship and Sunday school a priority. Consider being part of one of our Wednesday Bible Studies and going deeper in your relationship with Christ. Take time to look at all the different opportunities we have for you to serve as a leader of our congregation or to be involved in some area of ministry. Dare to look at how God can grow your faith and the fruitfulness of your life.

Finally, go and tell the things that are happening. Share with your friends and family the hope that you have found and the many ways God has blessed your life. The best advertising for God’s kingdom doesn’t come on billboards or air on our televisions…it comes from a faithful witness and a heartfelt invitation to someone else.

My hope is that we will follow those Easter imperatives and experience a resurrection of hope, joy, meaning and fruitfulness. Jesus has called us. How we respond?

Welcome New FCUMC Members

Calling All Men

Calling All Men is a Holston Conference United Methodist Men’s event Friday, August 1 through Saturday, August 2 at Tennesee Wesleyan College. The event features a community picnic, prayer walk, storytelling, music, workshops, Stop Hunger Now service project and engaging speakers. The University of Tennessee football team chaplain, Roger Woods, will share “Man to Man.” Calling All Men seeks to rethink men’s ministry to “Bring them to Jesus.”

To register for the event visit www.callingallmen.net or contact FCUMC member and Holston Conference UMM president Eric Knoefel at [email protected].

KARM Dragon Boat Race: FCUMC Award WinningFCUMC’s Feeding Frenzy thanks the church for all the donations and support of its participation in the 2014 KARM Dragon Boat Festival. The team raised $9,180 for KARM, which placed us fourth overall in fundraising. The event raised a total of $202,217. Member Les Gatto was awarded a trophy for being the overall top individual fundraiser and the team won the trophy for the best decorated team tent (using mostly VBS decorations)!

2014 marks our best year yet on the water with a time of 1:20 in the first round and 1:16 in the second (250 meter race). If not for a thunderstorm moving into the area during the second round that cancelled the rest of the event, it is likely we would have advanced into the top 16 medal round.

Daniel and Amanda Dixon joined on June 22 during the 11:00 a.m. traditional service.

Randy Frye, Senior PastorWhy I Play: Youth Choir Tour 2014By: Emily HardinEmily Hardin is 18 and will be a freshman at MTSU in the fall.

I have always enjoyed making music, but I never knew why. I had always assumed I liked music because my parents did. But these past few choir tours have helped me realize that the reason I enjoy making music is to bring a smile to other people’s faces. It makes me so happy to see the people in the nursing homes bearing huge grins and clapping along to “We are Marching” and “Praise his Holy Name.” This tour was also incredibly fun because I got to visit the Symphony Center and it was cool to get to sing in there. The Country Music Hall of Fame was cool too, and I learned a lot, and I’m glad I gave it a chance because I am not a big country music fan.

The biggest lesson I learned on choir tour is that the reason behind why you play is just as important as how you play. I am always worried about technique and getting everything right in both oboe and choir, but Mrs. Leslie and Mrs. Kim taught me that sometimes it’s not all about the technique. Yes, it’s important, but the main reason we are doing this is to praise God. Once I focused on praising God instead of getting every note perfectly right, I was able to play one of the best solos I have ever played. I will miss Mrs. Leslie and Mrs. Kim, I really look up to both of them, and I am glad I was able to go on choir tour with them these past few years.

Wednesday Night Fall FormationsYou’re invited to come to our Kick-Off Event for Wednesday Nights on August 20 at 5:30 p.m. Enjoy great food, fun games and get to know your church family even better! Spiritual formation for all ages will begin Wednesday, August 27. Come for dinner with your church family at 5:30 p.m. and stay for programming for all ages at 6:30 p.m. This Fall’s adult programming features a wide variety of small group classes that provide opportunities for you to connect more deeply with God and our church family. Here are some of our exciting new courses for adults this Fall:

“Invitation to John”: Taught by Randy Frye, this 11-week course takes participants through the unique passages contained in the Gospel of John. Participants will read two chapters of John each week and discover the life-altering stories that will invite them to follow Christ as true disciples.

“Making Sense of the Bible”: Would you like to understand the Bible so it can become more than another book on your nightstand or coffee table? Then plan on joining Daniel Ogle as he leads a group through Adam Hamilton’s book Making Sense of the Bible that will help participants develop a deeper understanding of the Bible and its life-changing and life-giving word.

“Creativity and Divine Surprise”: Amy Aycock will facilitate this 7-week book study by Karla Kincannon that is ideal for those who enjoy being creative on any level. Through this study and its components of creating, participants will discover their untapped creativity and explore it as part of their spiritual journey.

“Restless”: Jessie Buttram will facilitate an 8-week discussion on the book by Jennie Allen. This course is ideal for women who feel a restlessness in their heart and want to explore how God has woven together their passions, gifts and experiences to help move the world back toward God. “Studying the Story”: Taught by Jim and Betty Dougherty, this ongoing course will engage the texts for the upcoming Sunday through study, reflection, and discussion. This course is ideal for those who would like to have a more in-depth and communal approach to studying the Scriptures that are preached each Sunday.

For questions or to register for a course, please contact Amy Aycock at 689-5175 or [email protected].

Campout Fun

UMW and UMM’s summertime church wide fellowship brought Charles Maynard and cookout food for 143 happy campers! We recognized Richard Bolus and Dan Kelly for their longtime mission work. Madeline Belew and Meredith Wormsley shared their Camp Wesley Woods experiences. The event raised $1,482 to benefit Camp Wesley Woods. Save the date for next year: second Tuesday in July!

Emily Stapf: From the Front Pew to the Roller Derby Rink On Sunday mornings, it’s a pretty good bet that you will find Emily Stapf, alongside her sons Nate and Alex, worshiping on the front pew of the 8:30 a.m. traditional worship service. But during the week, you are most likely to find them cheering her on as she participates in roller derby as one of the newest members of the Hard Knox Roller Girls.

The journey from spectator to being known as “Wicked Wench” -a nickname inspired by her love of the Wizard of Oz and pirates-began almost a year ago when skating at her nephew’s birthday party led her to decide to try out for the team. She was hesitant at first, but after moving past her anxiety her time with the team has blossomed into a full-grown love affair with Derby.

“I was hooked from the beginning,” said Emily, who works as a computer technician at Halls Elementary. “Growing up I didn’t really fit in anywhere. This is the first place where I feel like I fit in.”

In a conversation over coffee, Emily revealed that Derby has not only been a place to meet new friends but has become a place where she has grown in her faith. In something that would surprise people with stereotypes of Roller Derby, Emily has been co-leading a Bible Study on Thursday nights for some of her teammates on the Beatitudes that has drawn in established Christians as well as those wanting to learn more about the faith. “For me, it is not an option not to be (a Christian),” she said. “We have some of the girls that are coming to the Bible Study. It’s been really cool.”

Despite some initial fears and uncertainty about just what she was signing up for, Emily said that the lessons she has learned and the fun she has had make all the bruises she has acquired worth it. “I have learned that I am not as scared as I thought I was about things,” she said. “If you keep going and keep trying, eventually you will succeed.”

Patterson Completes Church Administrator Certification

Congratulations are in order for our own John Patterson. John, who serves as our Church Business Administrator, recently completed training at Emory’s Candler School of Theology and has been certified as a Certified Church Administrator through the National Association of Church Business Administration. He received his certificate in Orlando, Florida, during the NACBA Annual Convention July 14-18.

“We are so grateful for John’s hard work and his dedication to serving our church as Church Administrator,” FCUMC Senior Pastor Randy Frye said. “We congratulate him on his achievement and look forward to his continued service of our church as we make disciples and change lives.”

Middle School Serves

Middle School students volunteered to help unload the Second Harvest food drop and prepared the food to share with the community.

Middle School students also served in ministry during their mission trip to Project Crossroads in Marion, Virginia. We are delighted for the way God is using them to make a difference in the lives of hurting people.
