I can……identify the correct use of colons (i.e., in
business letters, preceding list of items) within context.
…select the most appropriate format for writing a specific work-related text (i.e., instructions, directions, letters, memos, e-mails, reports).
Colon Rule #1Use colons to set off a list of items or words
ESPECIALLY when preceded by the following words: the following, as follows, or for example.
Example: When I get ready for school, I have to remember all of of the following necessities: my backpack, my lunchbox, and my homework.
Thing to remember: A colon introduces a list. IT CANNOT separate a preposition or a verb from its object!
*If you’re typing, double space after the colon!
Colon Rule #2Use colons in conventional situations.
In times. (This one is common sense.) Example: We get out of school at 3:00.
After the opening of a BUSINESS LETTER:
Example: To whom it may concern:
Between the chapter and verse in a Bible reference.
Example: Turn in your Bible to John 3:16.
Colon Rule #3Use a colon to set off a quotation in a
sentence.
Example: Patrick Henry concluded his revolutionary speech before the Virginia House of Burgesses with these ringing words: “Is life so dear, or peace as sweet as to be purchased by the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what courses others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!”
Types of Business Lettersapplication – the purpose is to apply for a job
(also called a “cover letter” when it is accompanied by a résumé)
appreciation – the purpose is to express thanks for a service (also “follow-up”)
inquiry – the purpose is to request information
complaint – the purpose is to report a problem and request a solution
resignation – one that doesn’t (the standard) or does protest ("burn bridges")

The Nintendo DS is awesome! I enjoy all of the DS games. There is a large selection of fun games to choose from. Playing the DS is fun and easy. I enjoy using the touch screen and the double screens. The DS has many neat accessories that you can buy. I like the cases, different color decals, and headphones you can use. I play my DS Lite every week. If you were ever to make a new and better DS; I would buy it in an instant.
