Feast of St. Matthew
I… urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received,
with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love,
striving to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace:
one Body and one Spirit,as you were also called to the one hope of your call;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism;one God and Father of all,
who is over all and through all and in all. (Ephesians 4:1-7)
Dear Friends:
The words of St. Paul above were proclaimed on the Feast of St. Matthew. These two saints are like us who take on many
roles, and use many and various gifts from God, to make up the one Body of Christ. Unity, therefore, comes about
through the sharing of one faith, believing in the one Lord, Jesus Christ, who is the Savior for all. In this Year of Faith,
proclaimed by our Holy Father, Benedict XVI, we began our academic year proclaiming the effect of the gift of faith:
unity in the Lord – Unitas.
Because of our one faith and our sharing in the one mission of Cathedral Prep, I would like to thank all who have so
generously contributed to all our fundraising events throughout the year. It is comforting to know the support that
Cathedral Prep enjoys and see so many give of their time, talents and resources to assist us in keeping the message of
Cathedral Prep alive. Our various boards and committees represent the strength of our community and provide an
important role in the success of the Prep Seminary.
In addition, I would like to acknowledge that our 2011-2012 Annual Giving exceeded its goal thanks to the Alumni and
friends of Cathedral Prep and most especially the Annual Giving Commttee. I would please ask that as you read throught
the pages of this Annual Report, you prayerfully consider a gift to keep the mission of Cathedral Preparatory Seminary
vibrant. Know that there are a number of ways to give: through our Annual Appeal, the Tuition Assistance Fund and other
funds and scholarships that are listed in this report.
Thanks for all that you do, in prayers and in your generous giving to help us make the Cathedral Prep experience that has
enriched the lives of thousands of young men a reality. I encourage you to participate, through your active stewardship, in
passing on the gift tht is a Cathedral vocation to the young men of today. May the words of Christ be our prayer:
“Ut unum sint – That all may be one” (John 17:21). May we, the alumni and community of Cathedral Prep, be one in
accord in faith and mission as we support one another and support the future of the Church at Cathedral Prep.
In Christ,
Rev. Fred Marano, ‟82
Rector - Principal

Feast of St. Luke
Dear Alumni and Friends of Cathedral Prep,
As I begin this new journey in the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs, I look
forward to connecting with alumni and friends of Cathedral.
Having been a part of Cathedral Prep family as a teacher, coach, Athletic Director,
Director of Stewardship and now the Director of Development and Alumni Affairs, I
am constantly reminded of the tremendous generosity of the Cathedral family.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their generous support and I am excited to continue
the work of Mr. Jim Dilg and Father John Cush, ‟90. Fr. Cush joined Cathedral Prep Seminary in July 2004
and has assumed many leadership roles including Faculty, Chair of the Theology Department, Director of
Recruitment, Middle States Coordinator, Director of Development and Alumni Affairs, and Spiritual Director
dedicating his time each day to improving life at the Prep. We thank him for his service and for his love for
Cathedral Prep.
As we begin our 2012/2013 Annual Giving, I look at the past year and see the many sacrifices you have made
for Cathedral Prep. We could not be the exceptional school that we are without your constant support of time,
spirit and treasure. Thank you to the 2011/2012 Annual Giving Honorary Chairman Rev. John Fullum, our Co-
Chairs John Power ‟85 and Dr. Philip Franco, ‟93 and the Annual Giving Committee for without their support it
would not have been a success.
Your participation in our 2012/2013 Annual Giving will help provide an affordable education for boys who,
God willing, may one day serve the people of Brooklyn and Queens as priests and strong Catholic laymen in
our community.
In closing, I ask that you remember Cathedral Prep in your prayers and know that you are remembered daily by
our priests and prep seminarians at Mass. I am grateful for the loyalty of the alumni and friends of Cathedral
for all you have done and will continue to do for the Prep.
Sincerely yours,
Mr. Tim McCleary
Director of Development and Alumni Affairs

BRIEF HISTORY
Cathedral Preparatory Seminary is a secondary school for
young men who have expressed a desire to consider priesthood as an
option in discerning a vocation. For this purpose, the school was
established in 1914 by the Bishop of Brooklyn, and continues today
under the auspices of Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio.
In 1963 the Elmhurst division was opened. In 1985 the original
Brooklyn school was closed, leaving the Elmhurst school to serve
students from both Kings and Queens Counties.
Since 1914 nearly 4,000 students have received their high
school diplomas from Cathedral Prep. The school alumni include
Cardinals, Bishops, Priests, Religious and dedicated laity who serve
the Church and society.
MISSION STATEMENT
As the high school seminary of the Diocese of Brooklyn,
Cathedral Preparatory Seminary provides an environment for
discernment to Catholic young men with a desire to mature in their
knowledge of Christ, the highest fulfillment of humanity and who are
therefore willing to consider seriously the priesthood as an attractive
possibility. Cathedral provides them with a college preparatory
program, rooted in Catholic tradition, and responsive to the dynamic
changes in society, in accord with the teachings of the Catholic
Church, the Second Vatican Council, and the Bishops of the United
States in their statement “To Teach as Jesus Did”. Through an
integrated program of prayer, study, apostolic work and activities, the
high school seminarians of the Cathedral community mature in spirit,
mind and body. They are prepared for the challenges of further study,
as well as to become prayerful and active adult members of their
parishes, responsible citizens of their nation, and loving, concerned,
generous members of society, no matter what choice they make
regarding their vocations.
“Cathedral Prep has a long tradition of forming and teaching the young men of the Diocese of Brooklyn for the priesthood or for future roles of leadership in the Church. I thank God for my time as a student of Cathedral Prep which was instrumental in my discernment. I pray that we all „tell the story‟ that is Cathedral Prep to others to inspire future vocations.” – Bishop Raymond Chappetto, ‟65, Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn

THREE CASES OF NEED “That they may be one.” – John 17:21
Jesus’s prayer is meant to be our prayer: a prayer for unity
and salvation for all. One way to achieve this goal is through your
giving to Cathedral Prep to support its mission of teaching and
preaching the Word of God and allow the students the time to
discern their vocations that will lead the future Church. Your giving
can be applied to three areas of need. Throughout the year these
three areas are met by various events, fundraising activities, and
generous gifts which support Cathedral Preparatory Seminary.
These three cases of need are:
OPERATIONAL – The Annual Appeal and other events raise funds to
help alleviate the rising daily operational costs of the school. These
costs can simply include paying for electricity to more meaningful
activities such as providing transportation for students to attend
retreats or the annual Right to Life March in Washington, DC.
TUITION ASSISTANCE – The annual Golf Classic, the establishment
of scholarships and funds, and other events are held to assist
students who normally may not be able to attend Cathedral Prep
due to financial burdens. Traditionally, Cathedral Prep has always
maintained one of the lowest tuitions in the diocese so as to
accommodate those faithful families and students who wish to enter
the doors of Cathedral Prep and seriously consider his vocation.
Sadly, our tuition is not enough to cover the cost to provide a well-
rounded spiritual and academic program, as well as beneficial social
and athletic programs. We ask our alumni, friends, foundations and
the Catholic faithful to partake in this endeavor to help spiritually
form and educate the young students of Cathedral Prep.
ENDOWMENT – Past and future capital campaigns and other funds
help ensure the future of Cathedral Prep. One way to contribute in
this area is through our Planned Giving Program.
Please see pages 18-19 on how you can give to Cathedral
Prep by supporting our operational budget, sponsoring a student
through the establishment of a scholarship or other form of tuition
assistance, or by leaving a legacy that will ensure our future.
Matching gift companies are found at the end of this report.
Contact your human resources if your place of employment matches
your gift.

“Cathedral Prep gave us so many opportunities to learn about ourselves, to discover and develop our talents and to grow in confidence in our capabilities. At the core of our Cathedral experience were Christianity, Catholicism and community. The faculty and staff reinforced those values for us every day. We remember them all as good, holy, wholesome, Christian men -- outstanding examples for young men thinking of becoming priests.” – Dan Friel, ‟73

WAYS TO GIVE The following ways of giving may offer tax savings and incentives, which can be a benefit to both the donor and Cathedral Preparatory Seminary. We advise you to consult with your tax professional or attorney for the best way of giving. Credit Card
Monthly deductions for pledges can automatically be taken from your credit card. Securities Appreciated securities are an attractive gift because they offer the donor an income tax deduction and the avoidance of the capital gains tax that would be realized when the securities are sold. Life Insurance
Cathedral Preparatory Seminary may be named as the beneficiary of a policy of ownership of the policy that may be transferred to the school. Real Estate Real estate can be an excellent gift. The donor may claim an income tax deduction for the value of the gift and avoid paying a capital gains tax on the appreciation of the property. Life Income Gifts One can make a gift of cash, securities or other assets and receive income for life and a charitable tax deduction in return. A variety of trust arrangements can facilitate such a gift. Upon the donor’s death (or, if a primary or secondary beneficiary is designated, the death of a beneficiary) or at another prearranged time, the trust terminates and the assets are transferred to the school.

Bequests An individual may give either an item or other assets in their will. Pecuniary bequests meet the needs of many donors because they provide the school with a percentage of the estate that remains after payments are made to all other heirs. Retirement Plans At the death of the beneficiary, the remainder of the retirement plan(s) is heavily taxed (at a rate of up to 91%). Such plans, including 401(k) accounts which are subject to income and excise taxes, may also be diminished by estate taxes. The bulk of the tax burden may be avoided if the remaining value of the plan is bequeathed to a non-profit organization such as Cathedral Prep. Please contact the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs (or indicate it with your gift if you use the enclosed envelope) if you wish to leave a gift for Cathedral Prep in your estate planning. “As a first time attendee of the Cathedral Golf Outing, I was truly impressed with how much hard work and dedication went into the event by the staff, the Golf Committee and the Alumni Association. This speaks to the true character of the school and what the school represents. My time at Cathedral Prep made me the person that I am today and I am appreciative of that.” – Vinny LaPuma, ‟01
