Background– Formed a voluntary group ABC in early 2006– A three tier local model. Hill & Valley Parishes– Consulted over 2,000 of 20,000 pop.– An innovative ABC Shop & Trailer– Published preliminary findings early in 2007– Began working on Shabby to Smart project and submitted form 1. May 2008– Some obstacles and opportunities in 2008!

What did we do in 2009– Formed a limited Company. Help from Storrington & Leatherhead– Solved the flooding. Thanks to Surrey.– Established high level discussion within Highways– Strengthened the relationships with both Parishes– Established a “Pilot Scheme” proposal with elements of the “Future Caterham” ideas, in heart of shopping area.– A joint proposal with Surrey Highways now established– Consulted with Tandridge Access group and RNIB– The overall bid now 50% an upgrade to all areas, 50% a Pilot scheme, with advisory speed limit– Parallel path, is a Shop Smart scheme, to help Town Vitality

•An innovative pilot scheme, half way between full scale shared space/ pedestrianisation and today
•Contingency would go to Lighting, or extending scheme
•An immediate economy boost via Shop Smart loyalty scheme

What did we do next?....Highlights of best practice
– Linked up with Leatherhead partnership, to create companyfor Caterham - with best of Storrington, Leatherhead andourselves. Three of the Study tour team as directors. Resolvedsome representation issues for Parishes.– Have finalised a SEEDA bid, with Excellent cooperation fromcounty, district and parishes, plus businesses and residents
– Applauded our Festival team for launching the first ever TownFestival over 6 weeks. 84 events and thousands of people.
– Launching a “Shop Smart” local card, with 30 shops, a Townportal site and fingers crossed 3,000 + members.
– Upgrading the 3rd Business meet Business event fromCaterham to District in Autumn, with District involvement >100businesses expected to be involved.

The keys issues for us to learn about:
– Partnership structure and experiences– From aspiration to delivery of a significant Street Scene project– Making a case for and operating a community facility
Overall we gained confidence our goals wereachievable, further built our team and foundsome kindred spirits.
