Testing
Dates Vocabulary Tips The more words your child knows, the more likely they are to do well on testing. So help your child:
Learn a new word everyday. Have a “newspaper scavenger hunt”. Underline new words in an article. Then look them up together.
STAAR Quick Tips for Students
Make sure you get plenty of sleep.
Don’t Cram. A good night’s sleep is more important than an extra hour
of studying. Studies show that last minute cramming doesn’t work.
Eat a nutritious breakfast. Even a piece of
toast and a piece of fruit will provide the body
and brain energy.
Exercise. Exercise increases oxygen to the
brain and helps with thinking and memory.
Read the directions-carefully!
Remember the testing strategies your
teacher has taught you.
STAAR Quick Tips for Parents Make sure your child is in school. Don’t schedule appointments during school hours the week of the test. Don’t allow your child to be tardy. Have your child get things ready the night before so they can get to school on time. Give your child a nutritious breakfast. Even a piece of toast and a piece of fruit will provide the body and brain energy. Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep. Most children need nine to ten hours of sleep each night. Encourage your child to exercise. Exercise increases oxygen to the brain and helps with thinking and memory.
The character for the month of May is Honesty.
Honesty is choosing to be truthful in whatever you say
and do.
In the words of James Wand…
Ready, Test,
GO!

Veteran’s Day Ceremony
Texas Reads One Book helps school districts impact families by creating a culture of literacy in every home and throughout
the community while simultaneously giving parents a meaningful, structured, enjoyable way to interact with their children in
the home.
CIS kicked off Texas Reads One Book with an assembly on April 16th. Riders for Readers motorcycle group passed out
a copy of this year’s book, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, to each student. Dallas Cowboys Head-coach, Jason Garrett,
read chapter 1 during the assembly. Students along with their families, continued reading the book together, one chapter
a day, and students answered trivia questions on the morning announcements. The artists of CIS participated in The Mouse
and the Motorcycle bookmark drawing contest. Each grade level selected a bookmark drawing winner and had their book-
mark copied and passed out to each student in their grade. Congratulations to the bookmark drawing winners, Faviana
DeAraujo– 3rd grade, Hannah Batson– 4th grade, Julia Acebo– 5th grade!

4th Grade Musical Parents, families, and friends traveled back in time with the 4th grade students, Taki and Tut, and their fossil friend,
Lucy, as they explored the wonders of ancient civilization. From the farm laborers of early Mesopotamia, the Egyptian
mummies who “rapped” to a chorus of ancient Greeks, and Romulus and Remus who dreamed of building a great city,
everyone loved discovering the archeological mysteries of the past with 4th grade in this musical!
BMSS Field Day Burleson Milam Special Services hosted their annual field day at Caldwell Hornet Stadium on April 19th. Several CIS students
participated in the fun and received medals, while other CIS students cheered their friends on from the stands.
STEM Saturday Texas A&M students joined us for our last STEM Saturday of the year! Students from second grade to sixth grade joined
in the activities and experiments. Some of the activities included building circuits, making kaleidoscopes, using fruits and
vegetables for power, mystery magnets and dive into density.
Box Tops 4 Education We are collecting Box Tops for Education. All box tops must
be neatly trimmed along the dotted lines and turned in to the
office in a Ziploc bag.
If a student turns in 10 box tops they will earn a small prize.
If a student turns in 50 box tops they will receive a homework
pass AND a free ice cream pass.
Cartridge Recycling We are getting paid cash for trash! Caldwell Intermediate School is participating
in an inkjet, laser toner, & cell phone recycling program to
help our school earn money. Mrs. Dutschke is collecting all
of these items in the computer lab. Please collect these
items from home, office, friends, and family then bring them
to school! Keep in mind when collecting cell phones that if
they are broken in half, have a damaged LCD screen, or if
the phone has corrosion, we cannot recycle them.
Thank you for your help!
